To not want DS to have nothing on when we have visitors?

Came down this morning and DS(4) has taken off his pyjama bottoms so bum and privates out.

I’ve spoken to DH about this before. We have someone living with us temporarily and I really don’t like DS being naked around them like this. I don’t for a moment think anything untoward about this person it’s just in terms of habits and dignity / respect I think DS needs to be clothed.

DH thinks I’m being silly. So who’s being unreasonable?

Your DH is being unreasonable. The kid needs to be clothed in company.

Joelle84 · 30/12/2024 09:45

At least needs pants on.

Ablondiebutagoody · 30/12/2024 09:50

Depends who the company is

Needmorelego · 30/12/2024 09:53

Buy him some long nighties.

pizzaHeart · 30/12/2024 09:54

I think 4 y.o. needs to have his clothes on all the time unless he needs to have his clothes off for a reason e.g bathing. He doesn’t need formal suit on if someone visiting but t shirt and pj bottoms are fine.

Rainbowdottie · 30/12/2024 09:54

Clothes in company for sure 👍
Respectful for all involved including your son.

I agree with this!

I have always had an underpants at least rule for DS who would much rather be naked all the time given the choice! Now he is 15 and I am pleased I enforced that rule.

HRTQueen · 30/12/2024 10:14

when ds was about this age he loved to not wear clothes

his friends would also do this and run around naked

I think children being so disinhibited is great they soon grown out of it

There is nothing wrong with the naked body

YouveGotAFastCar · 30/12/2024 10:31

Who is staying with you? I think that matters.

It’s really normal for 4yo to want to be naked. I think it may be time to ask the guest to move on now.

fandjango · 30/12/2024 18:35

Our four year old also likes to be naked but we have recently got one of the oversized long hoody things so even if he doesn't have his pants on he is still covered as it comes down to his knees. He seems quite happy with it and seems to have some freedom still!

HPandthelastwish · 30/12/2024 18:38

I'd be having a clothes on in shared spaces rule, if he wants to be naked he can do so in his bedroom. However your DH isn't on board so it's probably a non starter.

Haveyouanyjam · 30/12/2024 22:17

Under 2, fine, they have no idea. 3+ I think they need to know they can’t have their private’s out around other people in shared spaces. I explain it to our 3yo for hygiene reasons. Not really fair to have where you wee/poo out next to someone else, so got to at least have pants on if anyone else is around.

Murmum · 30/12/2024 22:23

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all. We have a rule - keep your privates private. My daughter knows it's ok in front of mummy or daddy (possibly the 2 grannies if she needs changed etc) but that's it.
I think it's important too that kids know they can't just run around naked, like they can't do it in school. Bath time and all is different.

KorneliaKnapp · 30/12/2024 22:29

I would question who you have staying with you making you uncomfortable about a 4 years old being naked in his own home.

CurlewKate · 30/12/2024 22:31

Doesn't it depend on who the visitors are? Close friends and family- naked is fine. Amazon delivery driver-maybe not.

Pepperama · 30/12/2024 22:36

For me, under 6 in own house totally fine, and by then they don’t tend to want to run around naked anyway. But yes depends on who is staying

LaineyCee · 31/12/2024 00:51

As an adult visiting houses where the child was naked, I have felt extremely uncomfortable.

I understand the argument that nudity is our natural state and that we shouldn’t feel shame around our bodies BUT I would have been much more at ease during those visits if the child’s privates had been kept private.

Needmorelego · 31/12/2024 11:01

@LaineyCee I was at a friends house once and her son then age about 6 came downstairs with no pj bottoms on (just the top).
I just made a joke of it "arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh I can see your bum....put it away" and pretended to cover my eyes.
He soon ran away giggling.
