Drippy female/male singing in adverts

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 29/12/2024 20:10

This trend has been going for a few years now. Drippy singing accompanied by acoustic guitar or piano, singing cover versions of big hits in adverts really make my ears bleed! They sound awful & are so depressing. If there's any advertising execs out there bring adverts like the old Cadurys adverts, Tetley teabag men, something a bit jollier & easier on the ears!
If anything is guaranteed for me to mute the tv instead of take notice of the advert it's this. These adverts are the work of the devil..

Yes!!! Agreed! I also hate those ones with 'normal' people singing songs poorly. Like the Barclaycard one where he sings Africa by Toto. Badly. Just why??

soupfiend · 29/12/2024 20:13

My OH laughs when this happens as he know how much it enraged me. The worse singing and its been more than a few years, its been ages and its awful

On a similar theme, I nearly started a thread just now about awful mumbly whispering acting voices. Im watching The King, a film about King Henry V and all the actors cant seem to speak properly, its this whispering in deep voices, its making my throat feel funny

And dont get me started on vocal fry.

CynicalSunni · 29/12/2024 20:13

Same trend with nursery rhymes.
Soft and whispery which is annoying.
Or they go the other way and too excitable and mad.

I blame thay version of mad world years ago. Nice enough but then everyone followed the trend.
There was that awful version on sound of silence too.

Tomatina · 29/12/2024 20:14

Just mute all adverts. Sanity preserved.

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 29/12/2024 20:14

I went to Cadburys World a couple of weeks ago & they had pics of all their old adverts, plus the gorilla on the drums playing the intro of In the Air Tonight. The good old days of tv adverts

Agreed, I think Ellie Goulding started the trend for depressing singing of old classic songs.

YourChirpyFatball · 29/12/2024 20:16

When you think of the Guinness adverts with the surfers and horses riding the waves. 😭

That just makes me cringe. It's god awful.

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 29/12/2024 20:17

@Tomatina my index finger is always hovering over the mute button, ready, before they get chance to inflict this vocal pain on my ears😀

Oh gosh yes this one is awful. And the acting in it is just so cringe! He does the whole air grab thing and the weird face. I don't know what the producers were thinking about getting him to do that - surely can't look good on his professional showreel or portfolio!

AngeloMysterioso · 29/12/2024 20:33

Don’t get me started on the Amazon one where they buy the janitor a tuxedo jacket (on Amazon?! What??) so that he can get on stage and warble one line of what the world needs now is love. 🤮

They dont even get him a full suit!
Really weird ''here sing for us"
At the end does he just continue sweeping?

ruethewhirl · 29/12/2024 20:43

Anyone else who was a teen in the 80s remember the 'WOOOOAH, BODYFO-ORM!' ads 😂

I think sanpro ads had only just become a thing, that one certainly set the genre rolling with a flourish 😂

alfagirl73 · 29/12/2024 21:01

Yes! Thank you! Finally someone has mentioned adverts with non-singers singing badly! I cannot stand those ones. I also can’t stand choirs of people who can’t sing but that’s another discussion.

DissidentDaughter · 29/12/2024 21:09

The anodyne, studied, faux-folk vocals really grind my gears. Utter sh*te.

I remember Mr Bean jumping out of his skin at that advert!

Melodyfair · 29/12/2024 21:24

Every year I get angry at the impending douchebags that are going to take a great song, slow it down and just ruin it, they should be polite enough to offer the song some lipstick, so at least the song will look pretty when they FUCK IT!

Sorry il stay calm, its my issue, what’s wrong with a good old advert like trio, um bongo or Kelloggs all bran 🎶there tasty, tasty, very very tasty, there very tasty🎶

I know it’s not the same, but every Christmas there is a radio advert for fever tree that gives me the rage, Jenny Eclair reading a script that doesn’t quite rhyme, so she sort of forces it to in her irritating hung over 60 a day voice, sorry I’m sure she’s very lovely, it’s just the words!

getahhtmapub · 30/12/2024 03:31

The trend of the breathy chanteuse murdering decent songs started about 10 years ago and it's bloody awful.

I've noticed recently they've now all put on Scandinavian accents too.

CottonCandyLand · 30/12/2024 03:55

YES! I call it whiny music. I’m in Canada so looked up the Barclaycard ad and it’s the same as my gripe. I can’t find the ad to link but one here uses the song “the more we get together” but in that horrible slow, whiny voice so it’s “the more we get together…….the happier……..the happier…….we will be”

😂 … as flaccid as the half-baked Brit take on ‘hygge’ and a million miles wide of the mark.

Hateful, both. And should be banned without further ado.

WiddlinDiddlin · 30/12/2024 04:36

Oh yep, poor enunciation, adopting odd accents, vocal fry, breathy, drippy, miserable singing of what used to be great tunes.

Ugh. Fuck the fuck off with it!

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 30/12/2024 04:48

That awful lost without you where the man collects his dog argghhhh !

getahhtmapub · 30/12/2024 05:01

@DissidentDaughter I imagine all the singers of these mournful fucked Jo songs are all wearing a 'vulnerable sleeve' while wheezing their way through a song.

‘Vulnerable sleeve’ 😂

World-weary vocals, weakly delivered by some random 22-year old.

I’m right with you. I now watch most programmes with subtitles because I just can’t follow plots trying to work out what the actors are saying. I would have to put the volume up so high, my husband’s and neighbour’s ears would bleed. And is there a person alive who can understand a thing Sarah Lancashire says without cranking the volume up? Jesus, I sound sooo old!
