Why do Brits live in darkness except for December?

Swedegirl48 · 29/12/2024 18:20

I am Swedish and at home if you walk down a street, most houses will have lamps in some of the windows, outside lights and usually people don’t draw curtains so you can see the lights from within the houses. I was asking British DH today why Brits tend to light up their houses so enthusiastically in December, but the rest of the year people draw their curtains and no one seems to put lamps in the windows (at least not where we live which is London). I am the only person in my street who has a lamp in every window of my house and leave some on overnight too. I think I am trying to overcompensate for my very dark street.

I would feel horrendously exposed if I didn’t draw the curtains. We get loads of dog walkers walking past, even when it’s dark, who could see right into our living room. I’d worry that there was a peeping Tom, or even worse, a sniper in the front garden watching me do a little dance or scratching my tits.

A sniper! So now I don’t need to just worry about peeping Tom’s, serial killers strangling me with my lamp cord, killing off all U.K. wildlife and dying in a massive fire cremated with my lamps😲I am also at risk of snipers😱

Well, me neither, but I dint start threads demanding why Britain doesn’t do things the Irish or French way.

That single sentence says so much about the cultural differences though, those are words you’d never hear from a Swede. Male or female. 😅

100%

I do. I earn double what DH earns. I have to. To pay for my lamps 😀

Yes! And being the root cause of your neighbours poor mental health due to causing them insomnia with your glaring lights. AND you are also preventing them from seeing stars!

Don't you dare come on this site and DEMAND people do things that they don't want to do in their own
homes!!!

I'm a a two bed with 12 lamps.
Are they on all the time, No.
Only one is on a windowsill and funnily enough, that's the one I don't turn on regularly.
Light is for those inside the house. If you're outside, use the street lights or a torch.

That's from someone who likes a nosey at interiors but with the COL, it's not hard to see why.

Also, tvs are so much brighter these days and can easily light up the whole room.

Oh yes and waking the neighbours baby and just generally being the neighbourhoods exhibitionist 😁

In Sweden, where the winters are long,
The nights are so dark, you could sing a sad song.
But in every window, a warm glowing light,
That beckons the watchers who pass through the night.
Are they seeing a dance? A family in cheer?
Or just someone binge-watching Netflix, too near?
The lights come from solar, no coal in sight!
Wind turbines hum with a sweet, gentle tune,
Turning dark nights into daylight too soon.
So here’s to the windows, the watchers, the glow,
And the renewable energy that helps it all flow!
The power of nature, so clean and so grand,
Keeps us warm in the dark, and the streets in demand.

Ohhhhh, well I'm sure you felt very clever but OP is Swedish so I bet you that she pays at least half of that bill. Swedish women don't tend to leave bill paying for their husbands (or wives).

Fellow 🇸🇪 here. God Fortsattning!

Really? I studied Swedish literature at university, was good enough to read Laterna Magica without going to the glossary every other sentence , been to Sweden many times and I have a good Swedish male friend (no romantic connection at all) he is years younger, so every time I try to pay half our dinner bill, he rages and says that 'I try to emasculate him'. He is 30. His father pays all the bills, his mum is a housewife (both Swedish going back hundreds of years). My friend is the same, his wife is a doctor, not Swedish, but French, but he pays all the bills.

I am going to London on Wednesday. I’ll be the one with this on. LED and rechargeable of course. Although I might not need it on Oxford Street.

There's no "fönsterbräde" in British houses. Nowhere to put a lamp, usually.

British houses have window cills. 🤷‍♀️

Stop it. I can't breathe. You are too funny with your degree and one Swedish friend. Is that your equivalent of the 'I am not racist because my cousin's husband has a black uncle'.

The cost of electricity. We only heat and light the rooms actually in use, for financial and environmental reasons

I don’t even have curtains in my house.
I also sleep with my window open.
Probably a serial killers dream!

This is a hoot and I largely agree with OP. But then lived in Germany for 5+ years and like Holland, they have not embraced the British love of curtains, like much of Europe. Personally, I put it down to the Blitz. Little Englanders worrying the the German airforce may suddenly decide it's time to bomb London again and don't want to get in trouble with the wardens when they check for total blackout conditions. WW2 has never really ended here.

What utter tosh.

StrikeForever · 30/12/2024 21:35

Swedegirl48 · 29/12/2024 19:06

Isnt it easier for serial killers to operate when people have their curtains shut? It’s easier to kill in darkness. I don’t have curtains and I have my light on and that might actually put off serial killers?

Seriously? That really is reaching 😂🤣😂🤣

StrikeForever · 30/12/2024 21:41

Swedegirl48 · 29/12/2024 21:51

No. I think most people are not interested in my life and if they do walk passed my house and see me eating my dinner or playing a board game with my family, they just think that they will think it’s looks nice. I don’t think they are serial killers who wants to kill us all.

But I thought your lamps are lit partly to deter killers 🤔

It is really really harmful to all wildlife, which in turn affects our lives, and future generations lives on this earth.

This article is talking about street lamps, not small domestic lights. It's hardly the same thing.
