is it just me or does anyone else hate the days inbetween xmas and new year and going into the new year. I feel like i end up a little depressed, like i have nothing to look forward to. Kids driving me mad, been round my OH to much so were bickering and i just feel out of routine.

Do anyone else feel like this?

It's quiet and calm and lovely. Modern life forces us to feel like we constantly have to be doing, buying, working, achieving something or else we're wasting our time but I think it's good to show down, rest and enjoy the peace.

ssd · 29/12/2024 15:58

Im in retail and working more or less as usual apart from Christmas day and the 1st

bevelino · 29/12/2024 16:00

I love these few days away from the madness of work and life generally. I am sitting back and relaxing.

HideousKinky · 29/12/2024 16:00

Someone on TV last week called it "that weird time between Christmas & New Year when no-one knows what day it is and time has no meaning"

My DH has already asked me several times what day it is

duckduckgooseduckagain · 29/12/2024 16:03

I don't like it. I love Christmas but once Boxing Day is over it's done. I put away most decorations yesterday and put the tree away today. Then I felt sad because I'd put it away. I am mostly retired and my husband still works so I feel bad as he is loving the rest. I can't wait until I can get back to going to the gym, swimming etc. Went to the allotment today to plant some gooseberry bushes and do some weeding. Was nice to be out.

Arraminta · 29/12/2024 16:08

Nope, absolutely love it, it's so peaceful (but we have adult DDs now). We're all enjoying a slow, sofa day today after having friends over last night.

I'm showered but back in cosy lounge wear and wearing a face mask whilst doing a jigsaw. DH is eating cheese & crackers whilst watching The Firm. DD1 is chilling in her room with her boyfriend. DD2 has gone out to see friends.

But we're all going to enjoy a take out later and watch a film. I honestly do not miss those chaotic, little children-orientated Christmases one bit.

hattie43 · 29/12/2024 16:10

No my favourite time of year . I don't feel at all guilty having some lazy days and like to plan holidays and things to look forward to in the year ahead

Norugratsatall · 29/12/2024 16:19

LOVE the days between Xmas and the new year.

We had family over yesterday so that was busy and hectic but today I am just chilling, eating (grazing) whatever is in the fridge, doing jigsaws, going for walks, reading and watching TV. DD2 has been home for Xmas but is going back to London tonight so I'm making the most of time with her.

Bliss! Perfect for recharging batteries before we all go back to work on Thursday.

SerafinasGoose · 29/12/2024 16:35

I love these days: one of the few gaps in my calendar which are undemanding and enable real relaxation and a proper break.

I've kept up the daily exercise except for Christmas Day and feel less sluggish as a result. Had a day swimming and in the spa pool and sauna on Friday. Enjoyed a beach walk yesterday and went out to soak up a truly beautiful sunset this evening. Spent much-valued time with my sibling and closest friend, playing games and curling up to watch films or play games with DH and DC, or just relaxing with a good book.

New Year's Eve will be spent with the usual crowd of friends a couple of hours' journey away. Come January I can look forward to the lengthening of the days and the return of my favourite time of all: spring.

RaininSummer · 29/12/2024 16:36

I find those days the most enjoyable and really missing them this year as I am working.

Sunbeds · 29/12/2024 16:44

I’m with you OP. It’s driving me crazy, mostly because I’m off for the longest period of the year (self employed) and feeling like I’m wasting time. Haven’t got the money to go away (envy you Sri Lanka!). We have a dog who pines when we go away. My 8 year old is missing his friends and everything I’ve arranged has fallen flat. I am watching the thread for ideas tbh. Don’t want to spend another year like this. Husband is happy lying around.
Back at work on 2nd. Seems such a pity to feel so down.

Same. I even need to check which day and date it is. Bliss.

dothehokeycokey · 29/12/2024 16:53

I love the days in between when I'm not working.

We have lie ins,we don't rush around,we go out for coffee/lunch somewhere and then have a nice walk somewhere(yesterday was along the seafront)

We come back home and do a few jobs like today cleared out a cupboard that's needed doing for ages, did the usual tidying washing etc and then we just sit and chill I. Front of the tv

I get to eat whatever I fancy (cheeses and meat with nice crisps and dips and pickles this evening) and literally do whatever with no time restrictions.

My dh works night shifts so him being around in the evenings has been really nice.

Vettrianofan · 29/12/2024 17:00

We have enjoyed our first year taking the youngest two to their first pantomime yesterday. It's been good fun this year.

Going back on the 2nd January!!! 😱

So wrong - it is a holiday!

BashfulClam · 29/12/2024 17:34

Saved 3 days leave so I can be off. I finished up on 23rd 24th and 31st are half days so only needed 1 full day of trace to get both. The 2nd is a holiday in Scotland and I took one day from next year to take 3rd off….i used to feel really crap when I had to work in between pre wfh. I’d walk to the station and all the houses would be in darkness and I’d be possibly the only person at the station and the train would be empty. Today I got up at 11.30, had crackers and Brie, walked to the local shop to get something for dinner…now back on the sofa!

fivebyfivebuffy · 29/12/2024 18:01

Don't like it! I'm back at work, it's busy and stressful and I don't feel like I've had any time off (was off 25th and 26th but working 27/28)

Hufflemuff · 29/12/2024 18:14

We usually do the panto or a lights display in this time. We've even booked a night away at a zoo before!

Lots of people do these things before Christmas but I prefer to save them for these mehhh days! Also doing them before Christmas just makes everything before Christmas too busy!

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 29/12/2024 18:16

Nope. I love it. I love being off work at this time of year as I won't go back on 7th to a gazillion emails. I really like having lots of time with my husband and I've been craving proper downtime to just switch off for ages.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 29/12/2024 18:18

I just went back to work, nothing very different to normal for me and I quite like that.

Worked Friday and Saturday and back tomorrow.

honeylulu · 30/12/2024 09:06

Love them! It's definitely still Christmas here. Tree is still up and we're still doing Christmas stuff. Like some other posters we save some of the events for these days rather than cram them in before Christmas day when we are still working and trying to fit in wrapping and other prep.

We did panto on Boxing day and also went to visit our local NT place to see the house decorated for Christmas and walked in the woodland. 27th went to the coast for the day to have another Christmas with my parents. 28th a nice long lie in, cleaned house, son's girlfriend arrived from abroad so we had presents round the tree, special dinner. Yesterday sorted some admin, another woodland walk, then a light trail in the evening. Today another NT place (have membership so its "free") to do a codebreaker trail, then will do my tax return and have coffee with friend I didn't manage to catch up with before Christmas. Tomorrow is NYE so will probably take youngest to see Moana 2 in the afternoon, then play board games in the evening until the "big kids" go out clubbing. Another walk/NT place on NYD and our friends from Scotland will stop by (doing the rounds in the South before heading home).

WFH 2nd and 3rd (boo) but then a relaxed weekend, taking decs down on Sunday (twelfth night).

In between going out stuff, lots of Netflix, reading, home workouts, Just Dance with youngest, decluttering - what's not to like?

I love these "normal service is suspended" days . Anyone who doesn't isn't doing it right!

89redballoons · 30/12/2024 09:12

I like it, but we've used these days to catch up with family and friends who we didn't see before Christmas or on Christmas Eve/Day, and we're going away from 3-6 January so there is still something to look forward to.

I'm WFH today and tomorrow but then off again until the 8th. Dreading turning on my laptop in a minute but hopefully it will be quiet-ish.
