The oldest you've known someone to get pregnant naturally?

My Grandmother was 44 when she had my youngest uncle, a healthy pregnancy and my uncle is now 47.

What's the oldest you've known someone to conceive and give birth?

48 naturally

Luisa Dilner had a series of articles about her unexpected late pregnancy in the Guardian back in 2009. She fell pregnant naturally aged 47, when her oldest child was 21. I remember being fascinated by it at the time. Her daughter must be about 15 now.

46 - My grandmother. Her 3rd child (my mum), kind of an oops baby. There's a massive age gap between my mum and her older siblings who were born in the early 1940s and my mum came along in the late 1950s!

duckduckgooseduckagain · 29/12/2024 16:25

50

TwinkleLights24 · 29/12/2024 16:27

A mum from school had a baby at 46. Her toddler is significantly delayed at reaching milestones but whether that’s down to her age I don’t know.

DaringlyPurple · 29/12/2024 16:28

My mother said she felt a bit old having me in her mid-thirties in the 1960s as most of the other mothers were early twenties. She said she felt a lot younger when a 46 year old woman was admitted in full labour - she had thought it was the menopause and she had a 26 year old daughter. It was definitely the mother in labour rather than the daughter though I agree that a lot of earlier miracle pregnancies were probably a cover for an unmarried daughter or other relative.

I know some in their early 40s. You can’t be certain whether a pregnancy happened ‘naturally’ or not though (with the exception of women from many decades ago) I suspect a lot of people who have needed IVF or even help from donors don’t share this information (understandably).

MaMisled · 29/12/2024 16:50

My grandmother had her youngest at 48 with no issues at all.

Readinstead · 29/12/2024 16:56

My Great Grandmother married at 17, first baby at 18. 21st and last at 48 by which time she also had several grandchildren. 16 of her children survived to adulthood.

This makes interesting reading. In “natural fertility” populations, the average upper limit of natural fertility is about 41, but of course it is a bell curve. for some women, the upper age limit will be mid 30s, for a few it will be late 40s.

This is fascinating. I remember reading that for most women 75% of their eggs will have abnormalities (ie result in early miscarriage) by age 40, so 41 as the upper average limit of fertility makes sense.

Of course there'll always be outliers. I know some family members who had healthy babies naturally at 45-46

BusyPoster · 29/12/2024 17:34

41

My friend at the gym, she was 49. Tried for years with her husband. Gave up. Thought it was menopause. Gave birth at 50!

I guess the lesson is still to use contraception until you're in your mid 50s at least?

43 and triplets
I was convinced it had to be IVF but nope and they were identical too

@ineedtowomanup That’s what my friend who got pregnant at 46 realized. She’d stopped bothering and hey presto!

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 29/12/2024 18:47

51, great grandmother.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 29/12/2024 18:59

Oldest I’ve known personally is 42.

But these ages terrify me 🤣, as someone who was done having children by 27 and is now about to be 40 the idea of small babies at my age horrifies me. Obviously it’s personal and if you haven’t had them then I guess it’s all good. But it’s not for me!

notarunner · 29/12/2024 19:03

49 - A regular at my old job. She lost a significant amount of weight and found herself pregnant with a surprise baby. Her little boy was adorable but I couldn't imagine starting all over again at that age.

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2024 19:08

My friend told me that both her grandmothers had their last child at 51. This would've been in the 1930s or 40s so definitely no assisted conceptions back then.

Littleme2023 · 29/12/2024 19:11

42 - a work colleague thought she was going through the menopause and then found outs she was about 4 months pregnant.

For most of these you just won't know if it was natural or not. Most people lie and say it was when it wasn't.

The one I know who was 51 was absolutely 💯 natural. She already had 3 kids (22, 19 and 14) and her baby days were long behind her so she thought.

She thought she was menopausal and went to doctors because she was worried there was something wrong. She had a huge shock!

Yes, NHS says you can stop using contraception at age 55.

leolo · 29/12/2024 19:19

Me, at 43 and 47, both naturally. While in hospital, though, a nurse told me of a 53 year old with a surprise pregnancy.
