Xmas flu no it's Ecoli?

My parents informed me that they had a cold/flu but were still coming round boxing day for Christmas lunch and presents. Had a good day though they both went to the toilet a few times (very unusual as this is the first time in 3 years they've used my toilet)
My df went back to the doctors today for some test results and more antibiotics to be told they have ecoli!
How contagious is it?
Are we doomed?

I think as long as they didn't make you a sandwich without washing their hands you should be fine.

Stressedgiraffe · 27/12/2024 19:23

I was worried more about hugs and kisses

I'm pretty sure that E-Coli is bacterial so in that respect I wouldn't be concerned unless you were VERY intimate.

UncharteredWaters · 27/12/2024 19:28

where do they have ecoli? In a stool sample?
or some kind of lung infection? Makes a big difference!

Stressedgiraffe · 27/12/2024 19:35

It was identified in a urine sample. But the both have chest infections.

I have to confess my ignorance here that I thought it was purely a digestive thing.

It’s all over the place. There’s pathogenic strains which produce toxins, there’s non-pathogenic strains which are normal and an
important part of your gut biota, there are strains which live in your get being useful, but can get into your urinary tract and cause havoc.

Presumably the e colic causing a uti isn't also the cause of their other symptoms though
Sounds like 2 separate things
And your not going to catch a UTI

My DD had a kidney infection caused by ecoli...

fuzzychic · 27/12/2024 19:45

Did you use the same loo? Did they wash their hands? Did they touch the loo handle? Have you cleaned the loo down?

Ineedaholidayyyy · 27/12/2024 19:50

I suffer with UTIs and often have ecoli detected in my urine sample, it doesn't make me contagious to others though. If it's something like food poisoning caused by ecoli then I'm not sure.

The ecoli would of come from the bowel

Shiningout · 27/12/2024 19:52

I get ecoli utis but not sure about how it works tbh!
