To think Anna Maxwell Martin ‘made’ Gavin and Stacey?

When I first saw her on screen, I literally couldn’t believe my eyes.

As a whole it was pleasant enough and watchable albeit a bit boring in parts - e.g the whole stag do thing was bit ‘meh’ - but I couldn’t just sit through it without scrolling through phone which is terrible habit I know

I love AMM. She's a great actress and she's been brilliant in everything I've seen her in, including on the west end stage in Cabaret. However, she didn't make G&S, all the original characters did!

Bulletbiting25 · 27/12/2024 14:37

I don't think AMM had any more impact in this than the John Lewis staff member who said the bride to be had already arrived...

LlynTegid · 27/12/2024 14:40

A minor part, much as I loved her in Motherland.

Fratty · 27/12/2024 15:00

The Christmas Day special was the first Gavin and Stacey I've watched. Coming to it cold, it felt a bit odd that two people who share a teenage son would still have so much live amsfy/unre

It’s absolutely pointless watching it without any of the back story!

Fratty · 27/12/2024 15:02

Accidentally pressed post.

So much love angst/unrequited love. Just didn't work for me.

However I liked AMM's turn. It reminded me of her Line of Duty character or the role she had in Good Omens. Playing the registrar in a deadpan way added to the inappropriateness of impending wedding. I think it worked

Fratty · 27/12/2024 15:03

I know the backstory! Impossible not to, just never been compelled to watch. Think it's an aversion to the constant "lush/tidy" dialogue.

It's the culmination of a 17-year-long story. I'm not surprised you didn't get it, it's like starting the Harry Potter series on Book 7 and being confused about why everyone hates this bloke called Voldemort.

doodleschnoodle · 27/12/2024 15:05

Anyway as to the thread topic, no she didn't 'make it'. It was a bit part, a nice little 'ooh isn't that?' but other than that, pretty meaningless.

LoafofSellotape · 27/12/2024 09:36

No. I don't get the love for her on MN or Olivia Coleman either.

I can only never see her as Sophie from Peep Show - she was good in that. Not sure what the fuss since is about either.

TheHallmarkedMan · 27/12/2024 15:14

She was excellent in Hot Fuzz too

KevinAndTracy · 27/12/2024 15:19

When I think back about all the things I loved about the G&S Finale, the appearance of AMM really doesn't feature

I agree that she played the role well but it was hardly a staring role and it wouldn't have made a jot of difference to my enjoyment of the show if the role was played by a lesser known actor

ChristmasinBrighton · 27/12/2024 15:24

No. Of course it didn’t make a significant contribution. How odd.

Doggymummar · 27/12/2024 15:28

Bev, Kev, Kev, Bev that's Olivia Colemans best performance

Hueandcry · 27/12/2024 15:35

No, she didn't.

No, I know the backstory story completely. The point I'm making is that them secretly sleeping together on and off for 10 years, at the same time as openly co-parenting well isn't a very convincing story arc.

Well perhaps if you'd seen the previous 3 series and understood their dynamic it would be more convincing for you.

You may ‘know’ the backstory, but if you haven’t seen any of the previous episodes you have no idea re the dynamics between the characters and why there’s still angst/unrequited love between them. I think it’s weird to watch a tiny part of a story and say that the story isn’t convincing.
Equally though… does it need to be convincing? It’s a comedy TV show. It’s not a documentary.

WalterdelaMare · 27/12/2024 15:53

I am a huge fan of hers, but she really did not make an impact in this.

I like Anna Maxwell Martin but I didn’t think her performance in Gavin and Stacey was very noteworthy.

This💯

Novaavon · 27/12/2024 15:56

No, not at all. She was hardly in it.

Harkinonnowhear · 27/12/2024 15:57

Who was she in it. Nessa, Pam, Mick and Dawn and Pete make Gavin and Stacey and Bryn holds up the rear.

Pixilicious1 · 27/12/2024 15:57

Jumell · 27/12/2024 09:44

But the ‘low key ness’ of her performance made her appearance all the more powerful

Powerful? I barely noticed her

Oh come on. She’s a British TV actress it’s hardly unbelievable she would appear in it. It’s not like it was Lady Gaga playing the celebrant.

That’s what I was thinking. She’s not that famous.
