Am I ‘outnumbered’ in not understanding why people dislike Mrs Brown’s Boys and James Corden?

I’m making the ‘sitcom’ play on words to ask the following :

Mrs Brown’s Boys is not exactly best sitcom I’ve ever watched but it’s not the worst

Whenever I see JC he comes across quite well.

I ask in all honesty:

HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING?

I used to quite like James Corden, but I think he's a bit up himself these days.

Mrs Brown's Boys - well for a long time I loathed it but (and I hate to admit it), it has grown on me over the years.

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/12/2024 11:45

I don’t get the appeal with either of them but that’s just my opinion. How James Corden has risen to the heights he has baffles me.

TwistedWonder · 27/12/2024 11:46

I’ve only briefly seen Mrs Browns Boys but that short glimpse was enough to make me realise that it’s about as funny as a bout of explosive diarrhoea

SomethingFun · 27/12/2024 11:56

I don’t get MBB but someone obviously likes it somewhere as it’s on Primetime telly. I can’t stand Corden - it’s a visceral reaction to his facial expression I think. He seems so petulant and up his own arse. And he plays himself all the time so why would I want to watch it. He didn’t manage to ruin Cats though so there is that 😁

CagneyNYPD1 · 27/12/2024 12:26

@Mysterian thank you for posting the JC/PS videos. Much is said about JC rudeness but PS was totally out of line in the original clip. JC has been very open about his struggles with his weight and body image. To have someone like PS say that to him so publicly must have been crushing for JC.

I don't mind JC. Yes he probably has been a bit of a knob at times but so have lots of people. He's a very talented writer and has done well for himself.

JC is an easy target to point the finger at. Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh made some horrible comments about him whilst on Celebrity Big Brother because he is fair game. Never mind that SO and LW have treated many young performers in the entertainment business appalling.

Uricon2 · 27/12/2024 15:26

I think very few sitcoms are genuinely funny, but as others have pointed out ,it is subjective of course

I see you seem to think Terry and June is hilarious. I'm in my 60s and don't know anyone who did at the time, to the point I think you are on a wind up Grin I was much more of a Citizen Smith fan, actually something people wanted to watch rather than inflicted on them, ditto Some Mother Do 'Ave Em (which was just daft, slapstick fun) and Fawlty Towers. My grandmother (b 1895) was mystified by why anyone though T&J amusing but loved the other two.

The new wave of standup in the early 80s was very, very refreshing and gave birth to Blackadder and the Young Ones, among other things. They have worn well.

I suggest having a look at Detectorists too.

lemmein · 27/12/2024 15:32

I like MBBs - its just silly slapstick panto comedy, inoffensive - I don't get why it gets so much stick, it's not meant to be high brow entertainment.

I can't stand James Corden though!

I think James Corden is very talented, but some of the things said about him put me off other people who are friends with him, who I think generally seem nice, like Ruth Jones, Matt Smith and Matthew Baynton, for no other reason apart from them being friends with James Corden. I think what are they really like if they like James Corden?

People show different sides to different people.

So I have had people be very rude to me before I've even opened my mouth, but be lovely to a friend. It's ended up backfiring. Same way people are told at interviews not to nasty to the receptionists, security etc as it can backfire.

Btw Rob Brydon has had words with JC about his behaviour to hospitality staff, etc. as being the people you mustn't be rude to.

Beezknees · 27/12/2024 15:36

James Corden is arrogant. Every time he interviews people he always manages to bring it back to himself. Also heard tales about him being rude to waiting staff and I cannot stand that.

Never seen Mrs Brown's Boys to be fair so I can't comment on that but I don't fancy it.

It's absolutely dreadful.

It makes pantos look sophisticated artforms in comparison.

tillytoodles1 · 27/12/2024 15:39

I used to love Mrs B but I went off it after a while, although the bikini wax scene was hysterical.
No-one here knows James Corden apart from what they read in the papers and I do think that he's getting picked on a bit.
I think he's a very talented script writer, along with Ruth Jones, and a brilliant actor.

LemonLymanDotCom · 27/12/2024 16:01

Met Corden, not a nice fella

I loved Terry and June’s house and the area in which it was set

it gave me a feeling of suburban Home Counties safety and security 😊

Mrs Brown's Boys is 95% shite but occasionally has had me crying with laughter. Usually when they've left a mistake in and gone totally off script. I do think it's lost its way now though and I didn't bother watching it this year.

James Corden is famously very unpleasant.

NotVeryFunny · 27/12/2024 18:38

I like James Corden (as a performer/writer), I have no idea what he's like as a person.

Mrs Browns Boys is utterly shit. One of the worst things I've ever seen on TV.

Not sure why you are trying to conflate the two.

Notachristmaself · 27/12/2024 19:21

@Reugny Yes I expect you're right! They are also all celebs, so he possibly treats them well but is poorly behaved with people he believes 'beneath' him like waiting staff. A bit like Cilla Black.

Yes, I always wondered how someone as lovely as Paul O’Grady (had several dealings with him and he really was lovely) could be friends with Cilla. But she probably didn’t show him her evil side!

SemperIdem · 27/12/2024 19:27

Mrs Brown’s Boys is profoundly unfunny - YABU

James Corden is actually quite funny when in work mode but seemingly a complete arse in his day to day life. A fair few comedians have suffered from this personality flaw over the years, he isn’t unique in that.

Munkypuppy · 27/12/2024 19:39

MBB is indeed dogshit. Regardless of JCs personality i just find his fakey chirpy cheerfulness dull.

I think it's ridiculous to imagine we can know anything at all about what famous people are like in real life. One off incidents and hearsay about isolated incidents are not exactly reliable are they? I'm also not really a fan of refusing to watch or read someone's work if revelations appear about their behaviour or views. To me the two things are separate .

I broadly agree, but in the case of James Corden, even when he’s acting he comes across as a smug, arrogant prick somehow!

Biffbaff · 28/12/2024 17:10

Mrs Brown's Boys is Boomer Humour. Old-fashioned premise of man dressed up as a woman being funny is just an instant turn-off.

James Corden comes across as insincere to me. Maybe that's what's not working for people, they're picking up on the insincerity of his performance.

I agree. I'd watch anything with any of the people I've mentioned above ( including JC), and I'd go out of my way to watch things with Matt Smith and Mathew Baynton in because I think they are fab, it's just a "are they really as nice as they seem?" feeling because they are friends with someone who is famously unpleasant ( often admitted by himself) to people lower down than him.
