Am I ‘outnumbered’ in not understanding why people dislike Mrs Brown’s Boys and James Corden?

I’m making the ‘sitcom’ play on words to ask the following :

Mrs Brown’s Boys is not exactly best sitcom I’ve ever watched but it’s not the worst

Whenever I see JC he comes across quite well.

I ask in all honesty:

HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING?

I don't watch anything with James Corden as what is reported about his personality and attitude is too off-putting.

Mrs Brown's Boys is just a caricature of the worst of humanity - can't bear it.

gingercat02 · 27/12/2024 08:12

Hate MBB and I'm Irish so probably should like it. Love Father Ted and Derry girls.
James Cordon is famously a huge dick but he is very funny

LakieLady · 27/12/2024 08:12

The only funny thing about Mrs Brown is that the character reminds me very much of a young Irish woman that I knew 30 years ago and is just like what I imagine her to be like now. She used to stand the same, walk the same and do the same bosom hoicking and folded arms.

James Corden is a smug twat.

Itisjustmyopinion · 27/12/2024 08:14

Mrs Brown’s Boys is awful and I am always surprised that it gets a peak slot on Christmas Day

Obviously some must like it as it’s always on but I am yet to meet anyone in real life that actually likes it.

When it’s spoken about in a what will you be watching on Christmas Day conversation, people just groan

Heatherbell1978 · 27/12/2024 08:14

The first time I watched MBB I thought it was some kind of spoof show, I didn't realise that it was an actual comedy sitcom that people watch.
And I find JC watchable but it sounds like he's a bit of an arse.

Now a show I think is awful is ‘Shooting Stars’ with Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves

Totally unfunny

Do you like their other stuff, OP? Big Night Out, Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, Catterick, Bang Bang etc.? It’s surrealist humour and a fair amount of pissing about.

PoisonRain · 27/12/2024 08:20

MBB is old-fashioned slapstick which is tired and unfunny along with the awful script, however...they leave in the mistakes, unintended/ad-lib interactions between the actors, and all the 4th wall stuff which can be very witty (imo).

JC is famously a jumped-up prick with delusions of grandeur but he's quite a talented writer and, to some degree, actor - he does have a specific character and I reckon he often plays himself (I admit I've only seen him in two things). One of my work clients was his babysitter apparently!

Ultimately, it's horses for courses innit - everyone likes different things.

DoNotIron · 27/12/2024 08:20

Mrs Brown's Boys, in my opinion, can be very funny at times. I always love the threads on here where people are queuing up to express their disdain for it and particularly for the low class thickos who like it. I mean, I also find some of Shakespeare's comedies very funny, so perhaps I have a split personality encompassing the village idiot and the village school teacher. I also find it hilarious when people say they themselves are Irish or their partner is Irish and they hate Mrs Brown's Boys, so that means it's definitely crap because naturally you're supposed to love all things Irish. I'm from NI by the way. And I consider myself exceptionally brave for sticking my head above the parapet and admitting that I sometimes find Mrs Brown's Boys funny. It's nasty and a step too far to call the people who like it thick.

hobbitum · 27/12/2024 08:22

JC has been successful in the US for years so wouldn't use 'not cracking America' as a stick to beat him with. His work is consistently good, probably regarded with a bit of tall poppy syndrome in the UK but at the same time his diva behaviour is also a turn off.

To be totally fair I’ve never see any of those other shows you mention

Bob Mortimer comes across very well though when I’ve heard him interviewed

i guess ‘surrealist’ humour isn’t my thing !!

I like Cannon and Ball and Little and Large and not this ‘alternative’ stuff!

Showing my age, much ? 🤣

I think of Mrs browns boys as a gentle/silly old fashioned show you’d put on with your grandparents. Kind of relaxing. Not that I’ve watched it for a while!

I didn't love Shooting Stars but did see what people found funny in it, and could see that they were objectively very talented. Same with James Corden. I saw him in a play years ago, and he was really incredible and he's a great writer and actor, but as a human being, there are many stories of him being an arrogant dick. But Mrs Brown's Boys? Just awful. Unwatchable awful, yet scores of people watch it!

mollyfolk · 27/12/2024 08:39

I'm fascinated that Mrs Brown Boys is popular in the UK. I sense that It's popular here with rural older people here in Ireland. It's old fashioned humour I guess. It's definitely not my cup of tea.

James Corden is hilarious. He seemed to get too big for his boots there but he's a terrific writer and host.

MBB doesn’t bother me … I find it funny that people get so wound up by it. Don’t watch it myself, but plenty of other do.

I think Outnumbered, & Gavin & Stacey, are both dog shite, but lots of people like them, so no objection to them being on.

James Corden in an arse.

Comedy is subjective .. other people I find unfunny .. Sarah Pascoe, Katherine Ryan, Jack Whitehall, Lenny Henry, Sarah Millican .. and numerous others …

Aliflowers · 27/12/2024 09:29

Mrs Browns boys. I’d rather watch a slug eat lettuce.

Jellytrain · 27/12/2024 09:31

I personally don't mind Corden, he was an idiot in a restaurant over an egg but loads of celebs behave as badly if not worse so why don't they get stick? It's very weird.

smellsfishy · 27/12/2024 09:32

I don't know about JC as only watched him "in" things, not as himself. I don't know enough about him personally to form a strong opinion.

Saw him with Anna Maxwell Martin in 'The Constituent' at the Old Vic, which I really enjoyed (apart from the lady next to me fanning herself with a paper fan which made all her bracelets jingle-jangle in my ear).

MBB on the other hand I am on team detest. I hate everything about it - only watched a couple of times, but nothing there to make me watch again. It just all really got on my nerves - the dingy set, the live audience, the main man's voice, the corpsing. Not for me. I don't like panto and it reminds me of that.

susiedaisy1912 · 27/12/2024 09:35

Mrs BB is shite. But I don't dislike James Corden, I couldn't care less if he's been rude to people occasionally. The restaurant story has different versions, apparently his wife is allergic to egg whites and the restaurant served them food with egg whites in it when they had specifically asked for it not to be which is why he got stroppy. To be fair I'd be cross if a restaurant fucked up my order.

Sadcafe · 27/12/2024 09:40

Really liked Mrs Browns boys in its early days but it’s just not funny anymore, I actually can’t remember the last sitcom that I thought was funny, probably car share which was great, prior to that would be going back years to the likes of vicar of dibley and older, there’s so little new comedy, all we get is reality tv, I mean, itv on Christmas Eve had a prime time slot of the best 100 TikTok moments, is that really how low tv has sunk

Lovelysummerdays · 27/12/2024 09:44

I’m not a fan as I just don’t think they are funny really. I do quite like American late night topical comedy type shows but I prefered Colbert/ Meyers to corden or the Jimmys. John Oliver is hilarious (although a weekly show so maybe not the same league)

Comedy is so subjective though there are lots of people who seem to find things funny that I think are utter rubbish and I’m sure the opposite applies.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 27/12/2024 09:45

Yes.

VarneytheVamp · 27/12/2024 09:49

Comedy is subjective. I don’t find MBB or Gabin and Stacey even slightly entertaining but obviously they’re both massively popular.

James Corden appears to be a nasty arrogant arse, and it’s not just the egg things; there are tons and tons of stories about him. He also seems unbearably smug to me, so that’s why I don’t really like him.
