Am I ‘outnumbered’ in not understanding why people dislike Mrs Brown’s Boys and James Corden?

I’m making the ‘sitcom’ play on words to ask the following :

Mrs Brown’s Boys is not exactly best sitcom I’ve ever watched but it’s not the worst

Whenever I see JC he comes across quite well.

I ask in all honesty:

HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING?

Can't comment on James Corden as only vaguely know who he is, but Mrs Brown's Boys is something I don't find funny. The best way I can describe the reason is to say that I saw an episode and thought the characters were mildly amusing, but there wasn't really a 'situation' to put the 'sit' in 'sitcom' so once the novelty of the characters had worn off, there was nothing there to entertain. I once had to sit through four episodes on the trot as my MIL likes it and I was falling asleep after ten minutes.

Really liked Mrs Browns boys in its early days but it’s just not funny anymore, I actually can’t remember the last sitcom that I thought was funny, probably car share which was great, prior to that would be going back years to the likes of vicar of dibley and older, there’s so little new comedy, all we get is reality tv, I mean, itv on Christmas Eve had a prime time slot of the best 100 TikTok moments, is that really how low tv has sunk

Aw gosh yes that Tik Tok thing !! Was going to watch it but didn’t in the end

Oh it's just cool to hate them. Seems nowadays people have to "absolutely love" something/someone or "absolutely hate it".

If you don't like something don't watch it.

orangewasp · 27/12/2024 09:55

I honestly can't think of a worse sitcom than Mrs Brown's Boys.

I do think James Corden can be very funny, though.

username299 · 27/12/2024 09:55

I've never seen Mrs Brown's Boys. James Corden is renowned for being difficult. Horne refused to take part in some kind of tribute years ago. He stalked Lily Allen, had an argument with Patrick Stewart on stage and isn't meant to be very nice.

Ah hadn’t realised any of this about JC

Mrs BB is shite. But I don't dislike James Corden, I couldn't care less if he's been rude to people occasionally. The restaurant story has different versions, apparently his wife is allergic to egg whites and the restaurant served them food with egg whites in it when they had specifically asked for it not to be which is why he got stroppy. To be fair I'd be cross if a restaurant fucked up my order.

That ègg story was so odd. If you were allergic to egg white, why would you order an omelette in a restaurant? Surely it's impossible to make an omelette without egg white? It sounded to me like he kicked off about something then made up a weird story as a reason why he kicked off.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/12/2024 10:00

I don’t find either of them the least funny. Unattractive characters and lazy writing. Who’s to say I’m right, though? Everyone’s taste is different.
Funniest thing I’ve heard this Christmas so far was Sorry I haven’t A Clue, from Exeter.

Itisjustmyopinion · 27/12/2024 08:14

Mrs Brown’s Boys is awful and I am always surprised that it gets a peak slot on Christmas Day

Obviously some must like it as it’s always on but I am yet to meet anyone in real life that actually likes it.

When it’s spoken about in a what will you be watching on Christmas Day conversation, people just groan

Edited

We always say the bloke who plays Mrs Brown must have something on someone high up at the BBC because as you say, we have literally never met anyone who enjoys it.
Either that or there are lots of ‘shy Mrs Brown’s Boys fans’ much like the ‘shy Tories’ who don’t show up in polling but someone votes for them.

I think James Corden is very talented, but some of the things said about him put me off other people who are friends with him, who I think generally seem nice, like Ruth Jones, Matt Smith and Matthew Baynton, for no other reason apart from them being friends with James Corden. I think what are they really like if they like James Corden?

FeegleFrenzy · 27/12/2024 10:03

I don’t like any of those types of shows, gavin and Stacey, Mrs brown, the office, outnumbered. Never watched them but have seen the odd clip and am not going to watch them. All seem a bit cringy and unfunny. Guess maybe I like drama type tv shows rather than “comedy” stuff. I did like the Big Bang Theory though.

About a decade or more ago I met a HCP who’d looked after JC’s wife when she was having a baby. Said JC was beyond obnoxious, like really horrible to the staff.

doodleschnoodle · 27/12/2024 07:54

James Corden apologises after restaurant ban www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-63305901

People don't like JC as there are numerous stories of him being v unpleasant. As a writer etc he's very talented.

This nails it. The man is incredibly annoying as a presenter/panelist and supposedly a twat in real life, but his writing skills, especially together with Ruth Jones, are up there. Gavin & Stacey is a little gem of a sitcom.

It seems popular to shit on Mrs Brown's boys because on here it's seen as a marker of superiority to do so. It's seen as a programme for "thick" people and the uneducated, and on MN being those things is almost as bad as being "chavvy." It's very simple comedy but also vulgar, and a lot of people dislike that. My MIL and her friends like it. They're rural NI, I'm not sure if that plays a part. They also all love innuendo-laden humour, so it's right up their alley.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/12/2024 10:09

Lee Mack was in the Exeter episode so it was a bit ruder than usual 😂

Discombobble · 27/12/2024 10:09

They’re not remotely funny?

I don’t mind mrs browns boys at all 🤷‍♀️

ThePineappleSeahorse · 27/12/2024 10:25

James Corden seems obnoxious and unpleasant generally and I don’t find him amusing but then I don’t see the appeal of Gavin and Stacy either. It’s not funny imo.

I’ve seen one or two moments from Mrs Brown’s Boys that I thought worked but as a whole it’s terrible imo.

I don’t understand the appeal of Outnumbered either. Those kids were so awful and irritating that I can’t bear to watch the actors in anything now.

That’s no reflection on anyone who enjoys them though. There’ll never be a comedy show that appeals to absolutely everyone.

SnapdragonToadflax · 27/12/2024 10:28

I don't like Mrs Brown's Boys because it's not funny. The jokes are obvious, you can see them coming a mile off and it's cringily hammy acting. I just don't get it at all.

James Corden gives off bad vibes. He's always seemed to have a massive ego and I had the sense he wasn't a nice person, even before the reports came out. He can be funny but I just don't like him. I never watched Gavin and Stacey because he was in it.

Berlinlover · 27/12/2024 10:34

I’m Irish and detest MBB, I was astonished when I heard the BBC were going to broadcast it. James Corden is equally awful.

SquashPenguin · 27/12/2024 10:59

MBB is the worst thing to ever be shown on tv. It is total dogshit and I can't help but wonder what on earth is going through someone's head if they say they like it.

JC is a twat but I can appreciate he is talented as a writer and Gavin and Stacey is funny.

Jumell · 27/12/2024 11:37

JC and Ruth Jones were on Popmaster with Ken Bruce on Greatest Hits Radio Xmas Day and both came across very well I thought
