Flu vaccination rant from a grumpy flu sufferer

I've been awake since 2 coughing from the depths of my soul, and munching down the paracetamol/ibuprofen to try and control the swings between boiling hot and shivering and my heavy heavy head. This is the 5th day of what can only be flu in our household, I've arguably been the most ill but it's taken out everybody and Christmas has been truly shit.

So, I thought this was a good time to have a rant about the uselessness of the vaccination service here this year. Primary age DC2 came down with this first. 'Flu spray day' at their school was twice postponed, and now isn't due until mid Jan! I mean what the hell is the point of that?! Yeah I know that not everyone has it and I know it doesn't fully protect you from catching it. But it seems logical that a higher than usual number of unvaccinated little super-spreaders has contributed to the current local outbreak.

Christ knows I don't intend this as any kind of vaccine debate I am too grumpy to have the patience for that right now. It's more that if you are going to offer vaccinations for winter illness, you kind of need to do it before half the winter is gone.

I know there will be probably good reasons for postponing , but I'm too grumpy and unreasonable for that too!

You have flu. By definition you cannot be unreasonable.

I had the flu vaccine in October. I've had flu twice since then. Christmas has been a write-off.

Adult DS, who hasn't had the vaccine, is fine and has cooked food for me that he knows I will eat, in his words, 'like a mouse'.

And I've got a bad back.

The flu this yr is horrific. Seeing people in their 40s with fevers of 39-40 still on day 5/6. Take it easy and look after yourself.

Ds and dd both had flu vaccine. We've all got flu. Same as you christmas has been a write off. I've never been so ill in my life. Ds started first and was a week in bed. High temperature, uncontrollable shivering, sore throat. I started 3 days after him. Nothing has ever bed ridden me before but this has. I was in bed for 4 days solid, high temperature, every part of me hurt so much, sounds dramatic but at one night at 2am my back hurt that much, my temperature was 41 and was shallow breathing i actually considered phoning an ambulance but didn't. Dh then started with it. He was the same plus sickness. 11 days from ds starting dd starting. Poor mite is still in bed with it now. She's same symptoms as ds and I, except horrible pain in her nose.
In our local area a lot have had it, almost everyone you speak to and a lot have said its worse thing they've ever had.

I am on day 22 now with flu. I am still hacking up green mucus, I still have a soaring temperate and I'm still desperately ill. Every inch of me hurts even my eyeballs and my skin feels like glass when it's being touched. I sadly can't have the flu jab due to a heart condition, but this has been absolutely brutal. I've had antibiotics from the GP to cover all basis and it went away for a few days then came back with a vengeance. I feel your pain OP. I don't know what the answer is. Have had to take cocodamols to suppress the cough reflex and to also deal with the body pain. It's miserable!

I managed a couple of hours sleep. I've woken up feeling just as ill as I did a couple of days ago, but everyone else is still steadily improving at least. I've felt so sorry for the DC variously being ill or bored because everyone else is ill. Hopefully they can leave me in a corner to suffer today and have a nice day together.
