Is 8 too young to watch Sex and the City?

How do you know they are watching it?

Could it be they have seen it as a watched program on Netflix and said they've watched it but actually have not?

One of the parents mentioned it in passing. Maybe they knew I was a bit shocked as they referenced the sex scenes being ‘vanilla’

Of course it’s too young.

This is utterly weird in itself. Doesn't really matter how 'vanilla ' the sex scenes are they're still exposing a child to them at a much younger age than they should be. Are the parents watching the show and the child is just in the room or is the child watching it themselves and the parents are allowing it?

Yes mention it to the school. What happens after that you will never know as school will not disclose but it is a safeguarding risk to expose children, especially primary children to adult content which SatC absolutely is.

Randomlygeneratedname · 26/12/2024 12:35

Of course it's not appropriate! I am pretty lax about some age ratings for older programmes / Movies but not if they have sexual content. That is my main line for all tv and films. A bit of light horror or a few swear words is not the same thing.

saltysandysea · 26/12/2024 12:36

Honestly the title should be enough of a clue. No 8 year old needs to see sex scenes.

It is quite a toxic show tbh regarding adult sex and relationships. The only thing going for it is the friendship between 4 women.

This is it. One of my children was playing Fortnite at that age so I wondered if i was being hypocritical. But it’s not really the same, is it?

Ugh! My 18 year old would be horrified watching it tbh. It’s outdated trash and guilty pleasure viewing even as an adult. For a child it would be super cringe and totally inappropriate. In fact bordering on porn in some episodes it could even be considered sexual abuse to watch it with a child. I might be tempted to report this as a safeguarding concern.

A classic Mumsnettet.

That parent is seriously lacking in boundaries. Poor kid.

BobbyBiscuits · 26/12/2024 12:42

Well, yes. But I think nearly all of it would just go over their heads. It's a bloody awful show anyway, so I wouldn't encourage any age group to be watching it. A young kid would no doubt just be bored and confused.

AngelontopoftheTree · 26/12/2024 12:43

I seriously was expecting to read was it acceptable for a ~14 year old to watch SATC, and I would have to think about it.....
At 8, of course its not OK!!!!

Yeah classic giving a shit about kids being exposed to sexually explicit material. What a Debbie downer. I’ll unclutch my pearls and go and send some dick pics to my 8 year old niece for lolz instead. FFS.

Yes that’s exactly what I meant, you should send dick pics to minors.

Or probably what I meant was, no one cares what your adult daughter might potentially think of a tv series that originally ended 20 odd years ago.

That most things viewed from a modern day perspective would be seen as outdated. Hardly a revolutionary view.

Well in the context of this thread I think it is relevant, but if you don’t then fair enough.

Not sure why that made you so annoyed though 🤷🏻‍♀️

An 8 year old is actively choosing to watch a programme (that's 25 years old and features women in their 30s) that covers rimming etiquette, golden showers, threesomes, anal, blowjobs, sex in public places, masturbation fantasies about a priest, vibrators, full frontal nudity..? If that's genuinely true then yes, massive safeguarding concerns.

Carouselfish · 26/12/2024 14:42

Whoever thinks it's okay is trying to move boundaries that shouldn't be moved. I'd keep a close eye on that person.

notatinydancer · 26/12/2024 14:58

Definitely

Why it made me annoyed? 😂 says the one who embarrassed themselves raging about pearl clutching and sending dick pics to 8 year olds.

An 18 year old ADULT and an 8 year old CHILD are not the same thing, so it’s really the most irrelevant comment to make.

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 26/12/2024 15:02

It’s not appropriate- however that is probably a minority opinion based on some of the things my year 3 class tell me they have seen.

I don’t remember there being any full frontal nudity? Refresh my memory as it’s been awhile since I watched any.
