Is 8 too young to watch Sex and the City?

OP posts:
Lavender14 · 25/12/2024 23:40

Its not even the plot and the problematic elements of the show its also that there are some really graphic sex scenes in it that wouldn't be remotely appropriate for an 8 year old to see in the background. Especially at an age where they're approaching puberty etc absolutely not. Tbh I agree with pp who listed this as a safeguarding concern.

MummyDummyNow · 25/12/2024 23:44

I agree, massive safeguarding issue. As PPs have said, some of the scenes are so sexually graphic it's practically porn. There are episodes about fetishes, drug use, shall I go on?

Who is the 8 year old being exposed to this?

Polly47 · 26/12/2024 00:12

When I saw the title I honestly thought you were going to say 15-16yrs old or something and there was going to be comments from people talking about how they snuck downstairs to watch an episode here and there when we were a teenager (like I did circa 16yrs old), but no we wouldn't let a 15yr old watch if they came to ask us - type of thread.

8yrs old is just ridiculous. Of course it's not appropriate.

CheeseyOnionPie · 26/12/2024 00:17

There is literally nothing in SATC that should interest an 8 yo. Not the storylines, not the friendship dynamics, not the relationships, zilch!

fashionqueen0123 · 26/12/2024 00:19

8? I have the dvds ans I think they’re a mix of 15&18.
Exposing an 8 year old to it is a safe guarding concern. Many parts will go over their head as they won’t understand it and it will be incredibly boring but the sex scenes are obviously not suitable😩

ThatKhakiMoose · 26/12/2024 00:21

Omg, on seeing the headline, I played a little game with myself that the age of the child in question would be 13 - which I would consider way too young. It's 18-plus stuff. There's an episode about rimming, for heaven's sake. In case anyone doesn't know, that's licking each other's arseholes.

If this isn't a wind-up, OP isn't fit to raise kids. They want to expose an 8-year-old to the concept of licking arseholes. JFC.

Edit: Sorry OP, I see it's not you. But you need to shut this down.

LittlePudding1 · 26/12/2024 00:23

I wouldn't even watch it with my 16 year old!

She would be horrified and see it as the ultimate in cringe.

I think it was a good show of its time and I remember really enjoying watching it when it first came out. I recently watched a few episodes on a random channel and didn't like it nearly as much, it has not dated well

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/12/2024 00:24

I watched it when it was originally on and I was about 20. I watched it again in my mid-30s and realised I'd been too young and impressionable to watch it at 20.

So in brief I'd say that 8 is about 20 years too young.

NPET · 26/12/2024 00:30

Judging from some of the things SJP got up to in early episodes (I didn't see later ones), I'd say 8 was far too young, especially if it's a boy we're talking about!

Is 8 too young to watch Sex and the City?

Yes

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 26/12/2024 01:31

I watched it for the first time when I was about 14 and I have watched it since several times. It’s actually quite twee and isn’t hard core pornography by any stretch of the imagination. 8 is utterly absurd though. But aside from anything else, does the 8 year old want to watch it? Surely it is just a dull ‘adult’ program. They won’t get any of the jokes, the men like Big will seem like elderly people. The fashion will a) old fashioned and dated and b) just for old folk and they just won’t understand any of it? When they aren’t talking about sex they’re talking about rent control and cosmopolitans. What 8 year old is interested in either of those things?

macap · 26/12/2024 01:52

So who do you know who's letting their 8 yr old watch SATC OP??

Superfastconnection · 26/12/2024 07:47

TY for the replies. It’s someone I know. Would you tell the child’s school?

I agree. I mean Carrie wears a bra to bed as SJP didn’t want to do nude shots.

But- you do see a fair amount of clothed sex scenes.

And yes a lot of stories about New York, careers, clothes, tiny aspects of relationships, shoes etc! My kids would be so bored its adult chat.

Tricho · 26/12/2024 09:12

There's a whole episode about how to make men's cum taste better and therefore blowjobs more pleasant

Of course 8 is too fucking young.

Anyone who let's their child (strictest sense - under 18) watch it knowingly should be done for child abuse

Tricho · 26/12/2024 09:13

Superfastconnection · 26/12/2024 07:47

TY for the replies. It’s someone I know. Would you tell the child’s school?

Yes. It's bordering on abuse. Huge safeguarding risk.

HPandthelastwish · 26/12/2024 09:14

If an 8 year old at school told me they had watched it I'd be whacking it on the Safeguarding software as a notice of concern. It's not appropriate and you are correct.

Tricho · 26/12/2024 09:17

Yes. It's bordering on abuse. Huge safeguarding risk.

Edited

But not before telling the parent exactly what I was doing, and why.

Because they're fucking disgusting.

bookworm14 · 26/12/2024 09:26

Yes, I would tell the school as it’s a safeguarding concern. It’s entirely inappropriate for an eight year old to watch.

Would the school talk to the parent or just log it as a point of concern?

Of course 8 is too young. I wouldn't even want my 16 year old watching it tbf, it's fucking dreadful.

Clearinguptheclutter · 26/12/2024 10:27

Gosh definitely
i’d say 14+ depending on the child, but in most cases 16+

NamelessNinja · 26/12/2024 10:28

Absolutely a yes, I mean it's even got Sex in the title. How clear can it be that it's not for children?!

user83652 · 26/12/2024 10:57

I'm stumped on what 8yr old would want to watch it!
