Why the fucking fuck have we had massive fireworks for the last twenty minutes on Christmas fucking day?!

Why? We have had solid bangs for the last twenty minutes - who the hell goes out on CHRISTMAS DAY at 4.30pm for fucking fireworks?

I'm at my mum's and will probably now have to spend boxing day in the emergency vet if it's similar at home, because my cats don't cope well with fireworks and I stupidly assumed Christmas day was not a day for fireworks displays.

Edit for time!

Seems fairly obvious they are referring to a child, not sure everyone has lost their son in childhood, but hey, as long as they don’t disturb you 😏

I didn't think it was necessarily a child. Still. It's sad and they should be allowed to make a noise if they want to.

We’ve also just had loads. Are you in north yorks too? I didn’t know it was a Christmas ‘thing’!

Weirdly no, north Essex! Never had them before at Xmas and have been here last 12 Christmas days, except last year I missed because I was too ill to drive.

Maybe it is Hannukah 🤷‍♀️

It is the start of Hanukkah today.

Hanukkah, which is Hebrew for “dedication,” is the Festival of Lights. The Jewish calendar is based on lunar cycles so not in sync with the Gregorian calendar which sets Christmas on December 25th every year. Hanukkah always begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, a date which occurs between late November and late December on the Gregorian calendar.

Don't begrudge anyone a few bangs for any reason but would like to have had some warning - there is nothing on our local Facebook, newspapers or football club's announcements and 4.30pm on Christmas day ended up being right when we were trying to have our Christmas dinner and it was LOUD and prolonged.

We just had them for at least 20 minutes relentlessly in North Surrey 😫

Theunamedcat · 25/12/2024 19:35

We have had Christmas being celebrated by a 24 hour bonfire behind my house so his neighbour joined in loads of pouring smoke just what we needed in all this mist

TheaBrandt · 25/12/2024 19:35

God what a fuss. I quite like a firework

Arielsmummy · 25/12/2024 19:36

I've had the same. Next door is out and their dog has been barking very loudly for over an hour, he's clearly distressed ..lovely christmas environment!

berksandbeyond · 25/12/2024 19:59

People are knobs, hth

Just read on FB that a family are warning everyone that they will be setting off fireworks in memory of their son who died on Christmas day a few years ago.

Maybe there is a reason for the family in your area.

Can people not pick less selfish ways to remember loved ones? Always got to be fireworks or lanterns or balloon releases etc. it's performative bullshit for social media 90% of the time anyway

Does it matter? Just accept that someone has a reason for setting fireworks off today

TheHateIsNotGood · 25/12/2024 20:04

Thought my dog was being a bit of an arsehole but then realized there was a firework-related explanation for dog barkiness.

Wasn't aware that xmas day was celebrated with fireworks but I guess it was just some peeps being them.

MrsR87 · 25/12/2024 20:25

There were some here at just after midnight last night that lasted for 15 mins or so. Me and DH had just gotten into bed after finishing putting all the presents out and sneaking the stockings into our 4 and 2 year olds rooms. I was so mad and worried that they were going to wake up and see them! Luckily they didn’t 😊

Yep we do. When your sibling kills themselves due to fireworks, you might too. HTH.

LoafofSellotape · 25/12/2024 20:33

We did too, about 5pm, really loud.

Raquelos · 25/12/2024 20:34

Some people like fireworks, some people don't. The people who don't like them always seem to imagine that their dislike should be prioritised by people who don't know them and don't share their perspective. Not sure why

olympicsrock · 25/12/2024 20:37

Hmm - in two minds. Personally I love fireworks but hearing that veterans might be traumatised makes me think twice.

I think with the Happy Holiday message , fireworks at Christmas will become more rather than less common in the future

I actually don't think this, I just think given the nature of fireworks it would be nice to have a bit of warning on days where it's unexpected, is all.

And I grew up within hearing distance of weekly tests of the Broadmoor siren so it's not that I'm not used to loud noises, I just think it's a bit antisocial to create extended loud noise without warning on a day when a lot of people will not be expecting it.

Am now home and one cat is unsettled and the other one is fine so I am hopeful we didn't have quite such a massive display here, if at all, and I can perhaps avoid spending tomorrow in the emergency vet with them for stress related cystitis (which is what always happens if they are home alone when fireworks happen - I can only make sure this doesn't happen if I know when fireworks will be, and I know I'm not the only one who has to do this).

Oh that's bloody selfish. Even as a kid I remember being horrified that any grown up could buy explosives capable of killing people. Hopefully they'll eventually be banned outside of organised displays! 🤞🏻

CruCru · 25/12/2024 20:43

There’s no reason to have fireworks for Chanukah. You light a candle on the menorah but that’s about it. It isn’t like Diwali, where they do have fireworks (at least in India).

VegTrug · 25/12/2024 20:45

DepartingRadish · 25/12/2024 17:24

Twats.

We had them going off last night at about 1am.

1am?!?!? I'm pretty sure that's illegal
