Worst gifts ever

DHs grandmother. She is 80. Very much of sound mind and has bought a lovely, thoughtful gift for DD.
DS aged 7 has… a multipack of dairylea dunkers. My face didn’t lie when he opened them and she said “oh Marie (DH mum, her daughter) said he likes them.
DS2 aged 5 got a duvet cover. It’s plain blue. Her explanation was that she was told me recently decorated his bedroom and it’s blue.

I’m gobsmacked. The boys were good sports but wtf?!?
AIBU to think these are shit gifts?

MIL has bought DH and myself so odd things over the years- she is of sound mind apparently!
-a toaster, we already have 2
-a duffle bag branded with her company logo on it. She used to get them for free!
-DH cannot wear synthetic fibres as gets too hot/sweaty. She bought him a black, polyester balaclava once. The burglar type! We live in Southern England and DH never even wears a hat/scarf etc!
-She also bought him a PVC plastic jacket! When he queried it, she said he it could be washing in the machine, unlike a leather one!
-She is the same MIL I've mentioned on other threads who doesn't wrap! Just puts things under the tree in the bag she bought things in. 1 year, my gift included a bag of wet, defrosted veg!

Worst gifts ever

Every year I think back to my ex mil giving me a used make up set. She was such a bitch.

Cheers to freedom Wine

Wet veg ew 😆
Don’t know if that’s worse than the balaclava!

My mother bought me a child's plastic toy that plays tiny records this year. I'm 62. She doesn't have dementia.

NotSmallButFunSize · 25/12/2024 15:27

I got a pack of 2 padded coat hangers for my 11th birthday from a friend's mum.

Er, thanks??

Londonrach1 · 25/12/2024 15:27

My aunt always used to sent us umbrellas (bit adult ones. The same colour every year). We used to use them as boats and twirl around in them.

You couldn’t be more wrong but ok. She wasn’t relying on info either. It was more a passing comment she’s caught on to. She knows very well what they like as she’s here every single Sunday without fail. Never mind. Was slightly lighthearted, probably needed to point that out eh!

Slightly lighthearted? That’s one hell of a back peddle from “worst gifts ever”, “shit gifts”, “wtf” on your first post. What did you buy her? And does she know you’re posting about her “shit gifts” and “worst gifts ever” on a public forum?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/12/2024 15:34

It’s not that bad. DH’s GM once got me a pack of tea towels. My 83 year old mum gives DD 11 money now

So she's on the mark all the time and the one time she misses it you go to create a thread about her? That's quite awful of you isn't it?

It’s terrible. I’m due to be hung at Dawn.

We got her a mini cruise. Not a back peddle; they are shit gifts. I’m laughing about it not stabbing a voodoo doll. Everyone else at my house saw the funny side. Never mind.

Honestly as a child some of my favourite and most memorable presents were from a great aunt who bought the most batshit items you could imagine.
My dad once got a CD of different car engine sounds (he has never shown the slightest interest in cars beyond owning one to drive to work) and aged 8 I got a tin opener and some sparkly sticky backed plastic.
My brothers and I loved guessing and then seeing what Auntie Hazel would buy, it was far more interesting than another selection box (although they were also greatly appreciated 😂)

This properly made me chuckle! A tin opener for an 8 year old 😂

Although the sticky backed plastic sounds amazing, I'd probably quite like that now!
