To really swear by drinking water ?

Jumell · 24/12/2024 07:38

I’m currently on a diet /exercise plan and trying to aim for drinking 2 litres of water a day.

I don’t mix my water with anything else - it’s just straight tap water but omg it makes such a difference to everything. It improves my

Skin
Digestion

Can speed up weight loss but ONLY as part of a calorie controlled diet and exercise plan - won’t make you lose weight on its own !

So yes - something this simple really makes a huge difference to wellbeing and 2 litres of tap water a day costs next to nothing

I was thinking yesterday as well that clean drinking water is something we take for granted in a rich, developed nation like the UK. Was thinking that if I lived in one of the world’s Least Developed Countries I might be walking 10 miles a day for this privelege!

So yes - water I think is an excellent ‘superfood’ as they say - or ‘superdrink’

And I say this as someone who isn’t really a ‘natural’ water drinker - I don’t really like drinking it - much prefer drinking Diet Coke/Pepsi Max if given a choice ! But this is why I space my water drinking out throughout the day - so 500 ml every 3 hours or something ! Makes it easier !

So in short - highly recommended!

5 litres a day?! Just why? Aren't you permanently searching for the restrooms? Surely not when you're out?

Lol I carry water everywhere... I don't know why or when it started but I've done it for years! And no, I don't like public bathrooms so I avoid if I can . I must have the bladder of a camel 😂 but I do have clear skin too

BigSleepySnail · 24/12/2024 12:19

It seems I'm in a minority, but I voted YABU because I cannot believe this is an epiphany for a fully grown adult.

Obviously drinking mostly fizzy and sugary drinks is bad for you, and not drinking enough water will lead to dehydration.

This is similar to being shocked that cooking your own healthy meals, rather than eating McDonald's, every day makes you feel better. "Omg if you stop smoking you feel better". No wonder the NHS is in crisis 🤦‍♀️

I raely carry a drink with me. I am perfectly capable of going without a drink for a couple of hours

Except alcohol. Caffeinated are diuretics - you might wee more but you’re still net hydrated. Eg 150ml drink, usually wee out 50ml, caffeinated will add another 20ml wee, still up 80mls hydration (have weed out 70). Made up numbers but that’s the theory.

Alcohol dehydrates.

I assumed we were implying non-alcoholic drinks. One of the articles does mention beer.

I have not gone hours without a drink in about 20 years!

I do this, then get distracted by something else and forget till the next one goes off 😂 but am going to make a real concerted effort.

Edited

Have one of those big bottles with markings right on your desk to track how much you've drank.

I drink water at key moments throughout the day so i don't forget, like a habit stacking. So 2 big glasses when i wake up. I fill up water bottles and keep by the bed so no forgetting as soon as I wake up!
Another glass as soon as i get in the door if I've been out, etc.

Thanks for thread op, I haven't been drinking enough, so this was a great reminder. 👍

I have not gone hours without a drink in about 20 years!

I had to take DD to work today as her train was cancelled (again Angry). I then popped into a, surprisingly quiet, large Tesco for a few bits on the way home.

I was out of the house for about an hour and a half.

Before I left home I had a cup of tea and a small bowl of cereal. At no point while I was out did I feel I needed a drink

Moier · 24/12/2024 13:07

I only have one cup of decaff tea on a morning.. rest of time I only drink water ( Good old Yorkshire tap water) .l drink to quench my thirst not for the taste..and drink loads.. Don't like alcohol or other drinks.. my Granny was the same ..and she had beautiful skin and I've always been complimented on my skin.

HPandthelastwish · 24/12/2024 13:09

I was medically dehydrated with Hyperemesis, last 25 lbs in 6 days which I assume was near enough all fluids. I felt like I was actually going to die and have never felt so ill, a couple of IV drips of fluid later and I was right as rain.

I felt like one of those really droopy plants during a heat wave that perk right up after a good soaking.

I struggle with plain water although it tastes fine where we are but it's a hard water area so a filter and ice make a big difference.

Agree with the under appreciatedness too and taking it for granted. The Water Companies are shits for how they deal with waste etc but even with the price hikes I think it's value for money.

Obviously you are new to the OPs posting style. This is a fairly sensible topic as they go.

Gem359 · 24/12/2024 13:23

My mum was drinking lots of water everyday because she'd read all the hype about it and was then told to drink less by a doctor because it was depleting minerals.
I keep hydrated but personally I don't think 2 litres is necessary at all if you eat healthily. You get a lot of water from food.

FleaDog · 24/12/2024 13:27

I cart one of the 2 litre water bottles to work with me.

I love drunki g tea, but to kee my water intake up I make myself take 10 big sips before I make a tra / any drink and when drinking water have a minimum 10 sips each time to try and have 2ltr each day.

Exactly. I regularly go 5-6 hours without a drink at work. I've never had any issues with dehydration!

Me too. I think I might be a camel.

I am very rarely thirsty.

DustyLee123 · 24/12/2024 13:58

I work with a woman who is evangelical about drinking water. She went for bloods pre op and was told to reduce her intake and take more salt before the op

Fizbosshoes · 24/12/2024 14:15

This is how I feel about drinking more water.
I've tried increasing my water intake and found it made no difference except needing to wee a lot more often. I drink about 500ml water a day, but maybe in the new year I'll try to increase that

To really swear by drinking water ?

There are big signs at train stations in summer saying always carry a bottle of water.
I have a bottle of water on the way into work because I bring a 500ml bottle....but I've drunk it during the day and carry the empty one home, but I generally don't need a drink on either journey. If I'm going shopping etc I wouldn't consider taking a water bottle

Would be absolutely my worst nightmare to be stuck on a broken down train with no water, especially as I am always with the kids! If I’m thirsty my mood plummets and I get so panicky. That on a stranded train having to look after bored/claustro kids would be actual hell! Same with traffic jams - thread the other day where someone’s daughter was stuck on a motorway traffic jam for 12 hours or something. Hence I always have water, just on the off chance that unlikely situation occurs 😄

Can you try task stacking? (Or whatever its cslled) so if there is something you do multiple times a day, eg answer a call at work, arrive at work, arrive at home, go to the loo, put your shoes on. ANYTHING that you regularly do several times a day, take that and have a drink every time you do it.

BetsyBrowny · 24/12/2024 14:52

Sorry OP.
It can't speed up weight loss.

It can be a substitute for other drinks that contain sugar, or calories, but it won't help you lose weight in any other way. It can also fill your stomach up so you might feel full and not eat other stuff.

I assume that is what you meant?

It doesn't have to be just water. You can drink tea (no milk) or black coffee which have zero calories.

You need a She-wee or potty as well for those situations.😁

That's a bit too long.
You may not feel thirsty but your kidneys need fluids to work properly or you can end up with kidney stones.

The way to see if you need more fluids is the colour of your pee.

Mapletreelane · 24/12/2024 14:58

I absolutely agree, I drink a lot of tap water...always at room temperature. I have water with me all the time. Even if I say so myself I have really great skin for my age (51) and I just use basic Nivea fave cream. I swear that drinking water is a million times better than expensive face creams (along with not smoking, and using sunscreen! )

VegTrug · 24/12/2024 15:19

My DD (9) has only ever drunk plain water since she came off milk as a baby. She has Autism and I think it's a taste thing (she absolutely should be drinking milk but eats cheese every day so gets her calcium).

I highly, highly recommend getting a Virgin Pure machine installed! £17.49 per month and it connects to mains water and filters & chills/boils it on demand. You've never drunk a cup of tea/coffee like it, than using filtered water 🤤 So so nice. So DD goes up and helps herself from the machine. It's like that really nice chilled water you get from coolers at the doctors! 💧

VegTrug · 24/12/2024 15:20

@Unescorted If/when she does agree to drink something, try putting electrolytes in to help with rehydration
