To really swear by drinking water ?

Jumell · 24/12/2024 07:38

I’m currently on a diet /exercise plan and trying to aim for drinking 2 litres of water a day.

I don’t mix my water with anything else - it’s just straight tap water but omg it makes such a difference to everything. It improves my

Skin
Digestion

Can speed up weight loss but ONLY as part of a calorie controlled diet and exercise plan - won’t make you lose weight on its own !

So yes - something this simple really makes a huge difference to wellbeing and 2 litres of tap water a day costs next to nothing

I was thinking yesterday as well that clean drinking water is something we take for granted in a rich, developed nation like the UK. Was thinking that if I lived in one of the world’s Least Developed Countries I might be walking 10 miles a day for this privelege!

So yes - water I think is an excellent ‘superfood’ as they say - or ‘superdrink’

And I say this as someone who isn’t really a ‘natural’ water drinker - I don’t really like drinking it - much prefer drinking Diet Coke/Pepsi Max if given a choice ! But this is why I space my water drinking out throughout the day - so 500 ml every 3 hours or something ! Makes it easier !

So in short - highly recommended!

Try matcha, or caffeine free matcha. It is so gentle on the stomach.

Makes a huge difference.
I don't like tap water (tastes chemically where I am) but I drink bottled water and aim for 3-4 a day.
I always feel less brain fogged, more energy & focused when I do! Also my skin doesn't feel as dry as the dessert when I do. Grin

Loving the thought of skin as dry as a dessert! Baked Alaska, perhaps, or trifle?

BottomlessBrunch · 24/12/2024 08:42

I agree with this. I feel massively better when hydrated - I've noticed as well it makes me feel calmer. I don't think I have anxiety but I have noticed on the run up to my period I have anxious days and being dehydrated makes it worse.
Can't give up the coffee or Coke Zero yet but I reckon I get a good 1.5 litres of water in most days

Adviceneeeeded · 24/12/2024 08:43

It really does! But frequently needing to go to the loo always puts me off! I deffo need to drink more water

Aerial200 · 24/12/2024 08:43

I need to improve on this!
I suffer with constant tiredness and wondering lf this is the reason why

This is so interesting, because my skin is visibly better and my digestion significantly better when I drink 1.5l a day on top of what I get from food and cups of tea - i drank only when thirsty when I was younger and struggled with my skin and digestion - perhaps I wasn't getting enough water in my diet or wasn't as thirsty as normal?

Maybe, or maybe something else changed. I certainly know that I use better skincare now than what I could afford in my younger years, for example. When we drink water, it gets absorbed into our blood. There is really no physiological mechanism by which it would go directly to your skin.
If you eat a lot of fiber but don't drink enough liquids (and I am deliberately not using the term "water" here), then it can create digestive issues.
There are many many factors we don't usually consider because we are conditioned to drink water so seeing the "benefits" confirms our natural biases. But correlation does not always mean causation.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 24/12/2024 08:45

Just to add!
I do find it nicer/easier to drink water when it’s really cold.
At work we have a fancy walker dispenser.

So at home I fill up bottles with tap (yes that deadly stuff 😂) water and put in the fridge so I always have it cold. And when am going out I can grab one to take with me. Then just refill when empty so there is a supply.

ChristmasGrinch24 · 24/12/2024 08:45

@MerrilyOnhigh baked potato more like. Grin goodness me I can't spell to save my life. 😂

Agree: so we bought a water filter jug. Tastes so much better.

thegirlwithemousyhair · 24/12/2024 08:52

Yep. I take a bottle everywhere. Dehydration contributes to arthritis as well.

Undethetree · 24/12/2024 08:54

sweetpickle2 · 24/12/2024 07:54

I do this, then get distracted by something else and forget till the next one goes off 😂 but am going to make a real concerted effort.

Edited

I have this problem too! Now I drink 500ml when I wake up, 500ml before bed and fill a 1L water bottle to drink during the day.

I try to get ahead of myself by drinking the bottle before lunch and the next 500ml with evening meal so that I don't need the 500ml before bed and then I don't need to get up in the night!

ThePoshUns · 24/12/2024 08:55

I've always drunk water. Luckily I just don't like sugary drinks. I can feel it when I haven't had enough water.
We are so lucky to have easy access to good clean water, and where I live it's lovely and soft as well.

Catza · 24/12/2024 08:16

It wouldn't have made any difference though. The counterintuitive thing is that your body utilises H2O molecules in the exact same way regardless of whether it comes from water, milk, soup or diet pop. It's all the same. In fact, there are studies which quite confidently point that water has pretty bad short term hydration potential compared to milk and tea, for example.
The original water consumption guidance suggested 1,5l of water and stipulated that most of it should come from food. Somehow, the guidance changed over the years with the liquid "requirement" growing exponentially but, sadly, there is still no evidential base for it.
"Drink when you are thirsty" is a good rule of thumb. Anything else is a wonderful power of placebo in action.

Are you sure drinking water instead of Diet Coke wouldn’t make a difference in terms of your health and weight? Genuine question as I might be wrong and happy to have it pointed out if I am.

bigkidatheart · 24/12/2024 08:55

Cut out tea and coffee about 5-6 months ago, drinking 3ltrs of diluted juice, don't like plain water. I was dehydrated before and I couldn't lose weight - noticed a massive difference and less migraines.

I think water helps your digestive system so can speed up weight loss but Diet Coke can help weight loss if on a calorie controlled diet as 0 cals

You can get a thing called jelly drops which are ‘sweets’ but help keep you hydrated, ideal for helping people with dementia who won’t drink, they may help your mum.

My Dm had dementia. Hardly any of the residents (all dementia) would drink plain water, so as well as tea/coffee they gave them several small glasses of weak squash throughout the day. Plus quite a lot of ‘wet’ food, e.g. soup, stewed fruit and custard, etc.

Unescorted · 24/12/2024 08:19

She hasn't got dementia.... Just a bloody mindedness. When she is poorly my brother/ carer fawns all over her. When she is well he is an abusive arse. She chooses not to drink because it is the lesser of 2 evils. I am aware of how dreadful this sounds.... But have been unable to disrupt the dynamic of their relationship despite trying.

Sorry, I wasn’t implying your mum has dementia. I just know of the jelly drops because my mum did have dementia and thought they are a good way of sneaking in liquid to stubborn old people! 😁

I thought I drank a lot of water but turned out it was hardly anything. The first day I drank 2 litres I felt like I had taken something because the mental clarity I had was amazing. I joke it was like Scarlett Johansson in that film where she ingested those drugs and can do things with her mind. It was insane.

Diet coke is 2 calories per can. Added caffeine helps to suppress appetite. Switching to water will not do anything of substance, I'm afraid.
Health... it depends on how we define "health" doesn't it? Diet Coke won't damage your organs, won't cause cancer or anything like that (despite the whole aspartame hype, there is little evidence of it being harmful in the doses that a human typically consume. From memory, you will need to drink 56 cans of pop a day to elevate the risks of adverse effects of aspartame). So, unless, there is a different definition of "health" you have in mind, I am not aware of any substantial data that would point to damaging it.

Your comment about mental clarity is lovely - 2 litres just makes SUCH a difference doesn’t it ?

I prefer bottled or filtered water even in hot drinks
I’m not a huge tea drinker so often at work have hot water with a splash of lemon
my top tip is to always have water bottle in car and by side of bed, on desk etc - if it’s there I will drink it

Imisscoffee2021 · 24/12/2024 09:07

It does make a difference, my husband and I go hiking every year to places thar are quite remote with no facilities, have to carry everything on our backs for a week or more, and we just drink water of course, usually from streams if its safe. Our skin is always amazing when we finish 😅 and we feel so good inside and out, the nature and exercise helps of course alongside.

Katemax82 · 24/12/2024 09:07

My mum never drank water and nearly died from horrendous kidney stones a few years ago

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/12/2024 09:07

@Catza, some people don’t have much of a thirst thing - my (otherwise entirely normal!) dh doesn’t - I’m sure his brain interprets thirst as hunger. I so often used to tell him that he didn’t drink enough. Of course he took no notice, until he ended up once in A&E, and later actually in hospital, directly because of it.
Once the medics told him very firmly that he must drink more, he now makes a point of it.
