Been a total hypocrite with my family and told them not to touch any of the ‘Christmas food’..I can take or leave the chocolates, cakes, Pringles..but everyone is out and i’m sat by the fire, candles, film on and a biggg plate full of assorted cheese and crackers/biscuits

God, I LOVE cheese 🧀

When my DH was alive we had 6-8 people on Christmas Day and the same the nex t plus a few people around for drinks and nibbles. My DH decided one year to get a small fridge to keep all the extra cheese in which we tucked away in a corner of the dining room. Months later I looked at the fridge and wondered if we still needed to run it so opened to check - you guessed it all the cheese was still there! We had totally forgotten about it.

You FORGOT cheese ? You need professional help.

Thank you@Tortielady your reasoning is very insightful although not fitting my scenario but I have decided I am going to buy some cheese. Recommendations would be great. All I have so far are the red and green packs which look like dollops of Philadelphia with herbs, some Wensleydale, Red Leicester and a sliced pack, probably Emmenthal or Gouda. I need a blue cheese and at least one other. This is woeful compared to my usual cheese shop.

Why has it been too difficult? the price? I do get that

I'm convinced cheese evaporates. How else to explain the disappearance of the slab of Wensleydale with Brandied Fruit that was in the fridge, nay, merely a week ago!

'Tis a Yuletide mystery worthy of M R James.

Edited

Where’d you find that? It sounds amazing.

I'm vegan. I bought some vegan cheese. I feel sorry for myself right now.

My Tesco order was due today and they emailed beforehand to say all the cheese I'd ordered was unavailable! So of course I stocked up while in Marks... only to find that the email was wrong, all the cheese was there. So I've double Christmas cheese to get through. Am sure I'll manage somehow...

You can freeze some cheese - not the camembert, brie. Stilton is ok but more crumbly. My parents freeze a large piece of Stilton as we have Christmas dinner all over again on Easter Sunday. Only can buy small pieces then.

Some Christmas cheese has a ridiculously short dates - early Jan. Ignore this as the cheddar in the normal packaging has a Feb or March date. Its for making sure the supermarkets get rid of the cheese asap after Christmas.

If you have those truckles - wax covered cheese, they will be fine for another 6 weeks plus. As I bought some for 30-40p beginning of this year dated 4th/5th Jan and were fine mid Feb.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 24/12/2024 14:09

This is very triggering. I ordered some cheese from a small dairy I've used before without issue and this year it has not turned up 😭😭😭
So now I've had to go out to the local farm shop to buy fancy cheese. To add to the cheddar, Brie, stilton, goat and manchego that we already had. As none of those were fancy enough 😆

We freeze most cheeses. Camembert and Coulommiers brought home from France, Comte, Cantal and even Cotton de Chevre. Very few real cheeses can't be frozen but as a pp said, the harder ones do go crumbly.
The Camembert and Coulommiers still bake well once thawed 🤤
Merry Cheesmas 🧀🫕

Oh no I have forgotten the camambert! Never mind - I have friends coming for a second Christmas in January....
However, whilst I'm here, can anyone help me with a quandary?
Back in the 90s I fell in love with a French cheese which was served on the cheese platter of a wine bar a few of us used to frequent after work. It was like 4 sided pyramid with a dusting of paprika (I think). It was very tangy and ....well, cheesy.... Also managed to find it in the Loire valley while on holiday. Now, all these years on I can't remember the name of it. I have googled French cheeses, but no sign. I'd love to get hold of it. Any clues?

Pippatpip · 24/12/2024 14:22

For all the cheese enthusiasts, I do recommend two holiday destinations namely Gruyere - utterly beautiful and you learn lots about the different types of Gruyere plus cows with bells in alpine scenery. Roquefort - or 'the cheese mines' as the kids dubbed it. The tour round the caves is very good and again, there are different flavours of roquefort depending on which flourine they have been in which cave. Lots of flocks of sheep too in the area.

Husband bought all the cheese and then I found some local cheese in a farm shop which we guzzled in about a day. Woops!

Thoughts and prayers. Do you at least have some good crackers and chutney?

Due to poor planning I have not managed to buy all the cheese I wanted this year 😭
I only have
Brie (2 kinds)
Somerset blue
Boursin
Cornish crackler
Wensleydale

This is not enough cheese
Please donate all unwanted cheeses to my cause

(At least I have decent Wensleydale.

My absolute favourite Christmas treat is Wensleydale, Christmas cake and port eaten in front of a good ghost story.)

This sounds amazing. Which ghost stories are the best? 😊

I remember going to a health food shop about 30 years ago with my DM and her colleague who was the first vegan I heard of. In those days, you could only by DF stuff in health food shops. I saw the vegan cheese and it was awful. The same cheese colour, texture for each of them with a sticker saying "blue cheese" "cheddar cheese" etc.

At least the vegan cheese range has somewhat improved. Though probably can never fully replicate every cheese with vegan versions.

Runssometimes · 24/12/2024 15:10

@duckduckgooseduckagain we eat vegan maybe 90% of the time and my DH seems to be a bit lactose intolerant. But at Christmas we usually go to Neal’s Yard Dairy to buy cheese. Just for one week. I have Comté, Stilton, a truffled cheddar, a soft goats, Gubeen and Pont l'Eveque. serving with cornichons, olives, quince paste, celery, apple and nuts. Also got some Camembert for baking. We did a La Fauxmangerie selection last year and it was ok but we didn’t eat it all and ended up throwing it out so gone back to smaller amounts or really lovely stuff. Totally stank the tube out though. Impressed with your willpower. We forgo any meat or fish with ease. But the cheese is just too yummy.

No, it's a ridiculous psychological issue from not being able to eat for over a year and worrying about stuff stemming from that.

But, I went and bought Shropshire Blue and a Stratford Blue. I've not had either before so all new things for a new start and a new year. Thank you.
