Is your kitchen as clean as possible ahead of Xmas?

Just trying to get some perspective.

I will happily put it out there that I am a neat freak. I don’t feel comfortable when things are unclean.

My kitchen is 90% perfectly clean. But there are a few deeper clean jobs I want to do. The thing is we will have people staying over and I just don’t feel comfortable cooking their food in an oven with a door that needs a degrease for example. My lot also rustle through cupboards and help themselves to things. I like that they do that as that is cosy to me. But I’d be horrified if they saw anything messy.

If I took a picture of my kitchen most would think it was spotless and that I was being ridiculous. But there are jobs that definitely need doing.

Dh is annoyed that I would rather clean than enjoy Xmas activities. For example we are due to do gingerbread houses but I would rather do them in a
cleaned kitchen. I am not deviating from the plan ie time wise. So not derailing just not “relaxing” as
my dh would like.

I assume I am not that abnormal.

Yes!
I spent the morning cleaning it!

georgepigg · 23/12/2024 13:12

Nah. Mopped last night and came down this morning to milk spilled and crumbs etc on it. That sort of shit keeps me busy enough tbh.

FoxtonFoxton · 23/12/2024 13:13

Yes, I'm like you. I'm not good at relaxing when I know there are jobs to be done.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/12/2024 13:14

No, it’s not. And i Couldn’t give a shit.

I agree with your husband I’m afraid.

Trickabrick · 23/12/2024 13:14

Why do they definitely need doing? Is it just you feel better when you know they’re done ?

If it makes you feel better, I’ve had my oven for 3 years and not cleaned it once. Nothing terrible has happened and I’ll get round to it at some point.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/12/2024 13:15

It will be functionally clean. It had a deep clean earlier this month. That does not need repeating.

NunyaBeeswax · 23/12/2024 13:15

My kitchen is not clean at all.
Plates and cups and washing up and clothes on the floor by the washer.

...

I've attached a photo of all the fucks I give about that.

Corda · 23/12/2024 13:16

I probably wouldn’t bother if we didn’t have people coming to stay.

I can understand why you feel that way, but I think it's toxic. Woman are judged by their capacity to live in an absolutely spotless house, so having guests see your house is a normal lived in house is a threat to a woman's identity and societal value in a way it isn't for men.

NunyaBeeswax · 23/12/2024 13:21

Corda · 23/12/2024 13:16

Are they coming to spend time with you?
Or are they coming to inspect your oven and dishwasher?

If they're coming to spend time with you, bollocks to the kitchen.
If they're inspectors coming to issue a "this kitchen is cleaned to a high standard" certificate, tell them to fuck off until the middle of never.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 23/12/2024 13:24

Nope. DH has been doing building work for 8 weeks; there's dust everywhere and piles of equipment. I'm ill and DH is resting, so nothing will get done.

Ordinarily it'd bother me because I like things to be neat and tidy and I can't enjoy festivities with a big mess everywhere. But this year I really don't mind. It helps that we've not got guests and we're doing Christmas at ILs.

WonderingWanda · 23/12/2024 13:29

Pretty clean, I did the oven about a week ago and did mean to give it another go....it's good enough that it isn't smoking when I turn it on now 🤣. The rest is clean because I've been scrubbing away all morning.

ChaosHol1 · 23/12/2024 13:30

No I need to get mine sorted tonight. Got crap on top of the cupboards that needs sorted. Want to clean my oven and microwave, got washing that needs folded and put away in baskets and clean the floor. Did the fridge yesterday before I went shopping.

DGPP · 23/12/2024 13:31

Not very clean here, will do it as I go. Big jobs like cleaning inside cupboards and fridges were done a week or two ago

LadyDanburysHat · 23/12/2024 13:31

Mine is clean, but not to the extent I worry about tiny things. I can understand your DH being annoyed, you sound like my Mum, she will always be cleaning rather than enjoy the people she has around her.

Please put down the cleaning stuff and do something fun with your DC. They will remember this when they are older.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 23/12/2024 13:31

I do understand your position. I'd be the same except living in a building site for 4+ years has made me more relaxed. I simply can't keep the house the way I'd like to, and I've learnt that it's not a huge deal. I've had to get used to doing what I can and still being able to enjoy things, otherwise my life life would have been on hold this whole time.

SJM1988 · 23/12/2024 13:31

I haven't cleaned much more than my usual routine. I did clean the oven because it had been 6 months so needed it....but added it to my normal cleaning routine.

I wanted to paint the water marks from the bathroom leak on the ceiling but never got there. I wouldn't stop a christmas activity to do it though

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/12/2024 13:32

Ours is not bad. DH has been cleaning it for the last week. He likes 0.a lean and t9-idykitchen to cook Christmas dinner in.

EmotionalSupportBiscuit · 23/12/2024 13:35

The food I ate from my oven didn’t make me ill yesterday so it won’t make me ill on Wednesday.

The kitchen is always tidy as we don’t have any appliances apart from microwave and kettle, so not much on the sides. DH cleaned the worktops and hob yesterday as he made curry for tea and splattered everywhere.

Could I wipe the cupboard doors and clean the oven? I could. Do I intend to sacrifice a minute of Baileys and crisps to do it? Categorically not.

randomchap · 23/12/2024 13:36

Nope, it's as clean as it usually is.

No time to do a proper deep clean, there's definitely dust in the corners, and on the book shelves.

All food prep areas clean, ovens clean enough, and the table is set already.

Close enough.

Peridot1 · 23/12/2024 13:37

I booked an oven clean for the beginning of the month so it was done then. I’ve just cleaned the top of the cooker and will wipe down the outside in a bit.

Today is my cleaning day. If it’s not done this afternoon it’s not getting done.

But we don’t have anyone coming to stay till new year.

Maddy70 · 23/12/2024 13:37

Yrs because we have visitors

JoshLymanSwagger · 23/12/2024 13:37

Nah.

The floors were hoovered this morning, and the kitchen could do with a mop, but it's too cold for it to dry quickly.

The worktops are ok, I might scrub them tomorrow. They get wiped before I prep anything.

Inside the cupboards/fridge/freezers are pretty organised and neat. I know where everything is DH has no clue more or less.

One thing I do need to do tomorrow is clean the windows - inside and out. They're filthy.

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 23/12/2024 13:38

Nope. I have no fucks to give. I may regret a few things as I prepare to depart this mortal coil. But failure to do more cleaning will not be one of 'em.

Besides, I'm at work. And I think the Christmas cleaning fairy has finished for the holidays! Ain't nobody else gonna do it! 😳

TheKeatingFive · 23/12/2024 13:40

I'm very much team DH here
