Have I been miserly with our cleaner?

romanfriendsandcountrywomen · 23/12/2024 11:12

We have a cleaner twice a week. 2 hours Monday, 3 hours Thursday. Pay her £80 a week.

She's here today (Monday ) but obviously won't be here Thursday. I've paid her £100 for the week- for her 2 hours today and the rest a Xmas bonus. DH says that's a bit tight.

Should I give here some more?

And for those who can barely afford to pay a cleaner at all stressing - please don’t.

Earlier in my life I nannied and I would babysit and do odd jobs for elderly people on the side. Receiving some sort of gift from a family I nannied for was really impactful because I was with them so much, but for people I worked a few hours for a month it was absolutely never expected. Some gave some extra cash or a little gift but many just wished me a happy Christmas and it was all appreciated. And to be perfectly frank, when you’re in someone’s home you usually know when they’re just getting by.

NoCarbsForMe · 23/12/2024 22:57

I pay my cleaner an extra week's wages as her xmas bonus.
She's coming tomorrow so that's her last day before xmas. Will pay her double.
I don't pay her when she takes holiday. She goes away for about a month in the summer usually.
Her rate is £17.50 ph

Unless you’re rich, I’d say that’s generous

Why on earth would a Postie get a bonus?

I don’t even know who my postie is, I wouldn’t give them anything.

I’m giving the refuse collectors chocolates because they go above and beyond, as well as my mechanic but that’s it.

My postie is fabulous and goes above and beyond. i just gave him £25 (I’m a pensioner) and he was over the moon . My refuse collectors I don’t know ax they come at 6am and don’t think they are regulars so they got nothing. My window cleaners also go £25 between them

@NiftyPeachDreamer maybe because they are a nice person and go above and beyond ? I got my postie some beers. You sound so tight and entitled

Why do I sound tight and entitled? That’s hilarious 😂

I always give the postman, my parents did too. I also give the cleaner, the Evri delivery woman, my hairdresser and the window cleaner.

I think mechanic is more of a strange one, most folk only see them once a year.

Throughthebluebells · 24/12/2024 20:07

I gave my cleaner a week's wages. She has only been with me a short time but she does a great job.

I don't tip the postman, delivery drivers or rubbish collectors as I don't usually see them.

chocolatespreadsandwich · 24/12/2024 20:12

I just give a bottle of wine /some chocolates.

We used a cleaner because I am disabled, not because we are particularly wealthy

We gave ours a week’s wages as a tip.

I know I’ve had a drink but who the hell is tipping their cleaner £500? I read their posts correctly, yes?

You did. They’re lying.

wakijaki09 · 24/12/2024 22:12

I clean for several people on a weekly, fortnightly and as and when needed basis...all but one gave me a card, present and/or money...all except one who I do weekly who always have an issue with paying me on time even though I always do more work than I'm paid for. Tbh I had a bad feeling about taking this client on as she just gave me bad vibes from the start. I think I'll be looking for someone else to take her slot as to not even get a card was insulting.

What does a bin man do thats above and beyond?

devilspawn · 23/12/2024 13:33

I imagine you're charging far more than £16/hour in general though.

The point is tipping/giving bonuses to people who are on a lower (self-employed) income.

And how much do you normally tip at the nail salon, £1?

Edited

Actually most cleaners are paid cash in hand so they don’t even pay tax as they don’t declare it and often get benefits on top as unemployed. Therefore they’re earning more than you think. Regardless a tip is nice if they deserve it (ie if they do their job well) as most are still struggling financially and have families to support.

Happilyobtuse · 24/12/2024 22:51

My cleaner comes once a week and we pay her £40, I gave her a bottle of wine, a box of biscuits from Waitrose, a box of chocolate truffles, pajamas from M & S and a perfume gift set. She was pleased. I think £68 is ok.

I like my postie, he is a nice man who always ensures we get our parcels even when we aren’t in. He lost his wife last year and has had a tough year coming to terms with it all. He got a bottle of wine, a box of Waitrose biscuits, a box of chocolate truffles and a card. I always give gifts to the ppl that help me through out the year at Christmas, that is the postie, cleaner, window cleaner, gardener, kids swimming instructor, dance teacher, school teachers, after school and breakfast club staff, bin men, EVRI driver etc. Christmas is about spreading joy and being grateful, this gives me true happiness.

Mine comes twice a week.
But she goes above and beyond for me.
Always helping in other ways ( I'm disabled but no caring).
I gave her £500 last week and some shopping vouchers.

Christ that’s more than my husband brings home for a 40 hour week 😂

ichundich · 25/12/2024 06:09

Why would you pay for a service you're not getting at all? Cleaner needs to set her rates so she has enough for her holidays and sickness. Only on Mumsnet...

If you give a gift you should give without expectation and to give joy. It is better to give than to receive and you would realise that if you actually tried it out! The person giving their cleaner £500 probably wants to show their appreciation and for thanking their cleaner. And this is a great time of the year to do that!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 25/12/2024 08:43

i think it’s ok. We gave ours a 30 gift. He works via an agency and comes fortnightly.

A very sweeping statement

ParsnipPuree · 25/12/2024 15:15

Of course that's fine and perfectly generous.

You could always put a bit more in her bank account if you are feeling bad. Or is she cash in hand?

Alternatively, if he is voicing the opinion it is tight, he could top it up to what he thinks is an acceptable amount.
