Have I been miserly with our cleaner?

romanfriendsandcountrywomen · 23/12/2024 11:12

We have a cleaner twice a week. 2 hours Monday, 3 hours Thursday. Pay her £80 a week.

She's here today (Monday ) but obviously won't be here Thursday. I've paid her £100 for the week- for her 2 hours today and the rest a Xmas bonus. DH says that's a bit tight.

Should I give here some more?

I gave mine 2 weeks extra pay as a Christmas bonus/present.

AgnesX · 23/12/2024 16:32

I've given mine what she'd get if she came to me (2 x Weds) It probably is mean not to give any extra but things are tight.

Applepoop · 23/12/2024 16:33

I don't have a cleaner, but I think you have been appropriately generous.

Nothing remotely useful to add, except that a previous poster's "knobless oblige" in the place of "noblesse oblige" is perhaps the greatest typo I've ever seen on this site 😅 (unless it was intentional...?) either way, genuine lol

It really tickled me.

I am genuinely asking- not a flex at all. The cleaner is a pretty new thing as I'm now FT at work so I was just trying to figure out if we were doing it right!

Were you obliged to pay her for Thursday?

ilovesooty · 23/12/2024 16:48

TartanMammy · 23/12/2024 15:46

I gave my cleaner £30 and a bottle of wine. She comes every two weeks though for two hours at £15 an hour.

I don't mind, I think a Xmas tip is part of the parcel of having a cleaner but she didn't even say thank you, which irks me a bit.

My cleaner gave me some Polish sweets and biscuits. She does that every year.

BubblinTrouble · 23/12/2024 16:49

We usually give a small box of chocolates for the family.

This year I gave her daughter a small box of chocolates and then a week’s pay as her bonus. She is getting married as well over the break, so it was more than we usually give.

Igavebirthtoabanana · 23/12/2024 16:49

I think it sounds fine to me OP but I never know whats the done thing with cleaners, posties etc.

In the past I always bougth nice chocs for my cleaners, it never occured to me to give them money, nevermind weeks wages.

I now have a new cleaner, well sometimes it’s just her and sometimes it’s her two “girls” (both middle aged women but that’s how she calls them). The cleaning is not great, it’s increasingly starting to annoy me more and more. But the mug I am, I gave both “girls” a £20 note in the Xmas cards for them. No thank you…

They also clean my neighbours house and she gives them chocolates so I thought £20 cash is pretty good compared to that.

Incidentally we would have been due our clean today but the they started their xmas break about 10 days ago!!

Mine comes twice a week.
But she goes above and beyond for me.
Always helping in other ways ( I'm disabled but no caring).
I gave her £500 last week and some shopping vouchers.

Just out of curiosity do you have a well paid job?
That's more than some people's PIP 😳

You're very generous.

Mrsknowitall · 23/12/2024 16:52

I’m a cleaner and didn’t get anything from a couple of my clients, tbh not that I expect it but a show of appreciation would be nice but not even a card, and these people are extremely well off, I’m very precise in my job and make sure that I do a good job also very accommodating so if they cancel I will always try to fit them in somewhere else that week. off of some of my other clients I got chocolate and some bits from the white company which is lovely so what you have done is very generous and I’m sure she was very grateful ☺️

Perfectlystill · 23/12/2024 16:52

I give our cleaner an extra weeks money

Liddlediddle · 23/12/2024 16:53

I think it's ok as she is travelling on Boxing Day. The only thing I might do is offer her another date to make up the missed session.

I give my cleaner £200 but I've used her for 15 years and I really like her. I pay around £90 a week.

AngelontopoftheTree · 23/12/2024 16:54

I think that's a good enough, what does your DH suggest?

I thought so too!

Boomer55 · 23/12/2024 16:58

It surely depends on the "wealth" of the employer. A millionaire would be expected to tip more than a bottle of wine or limited cash.

A poorer employer wouldn't. 🤷‍♀️

TouchoftheTism · 23/12/2024 17:00

Shouldnt tip them anything. It's as ludicrous as tipping your mechanic or window cleaner.

AngelontopoftheTree · 23/12/2024 17:01

Resilienceisimportant · 23/12/2024 13:41

So you are happy with a £20 bonus for the whole year when her weekly pay is £80? I think that’s very low. I would also argue that is you can afford £80 a week for cleaning you can afford a bit more.

Most cleaners aren’t exactly millionaires.

Her weekly pay from one customer for 5 hours work..... Not her weekly pay in total!
I'd see it as £68 bonus as she's self employed and not working on Thursday.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/12/2024 17:02

I gave our cleaner an extra week of money - she isn’t actually not coming any weeks so it’s not for a week she isn’t coming, it’s on top - and a little gift for her and one for her son.

I wrote her card in her home language which was really hard!

😆🤣 Obliging the knobless??

(My phone tried to correct it to noblesse🤪)

AgileGreenSeal · 23/12/2024 17:04

£50 bonus on top of usual wage at the very least. £20 is mean.

Out of interest, what Polish sweets were they? We’ve just discovered this year that Polish “fudge” sweets are lovely! We were given them by someone else, not our cleaner (who isn’t Polish) but just interested!

LividBauble · 23/12/2024 17:05

I'm a single mum with no money or time.

I have a cleaner once a month because I have no time to clean. They're coming just after new year and I won't be tipping, because I have nothing left to give. I've bought all DC's Christmas presents on Vinted.

Reading this thread has made me die a bit inside that they'll be expecting something.

AnarchismUK · 23/12/2024 17:12

A week's wages around here (including mine) seems the norm and a bottle and/or chocolates.

WalkingCommentary · 23/12/2024 17:15

@LividBauble I honestly think context is a lot here. I live in a tiny house without any luxuries so it's quite clear I don't have a lot of cash and having her come is my 'treat' to myself. If I had to factor in big bonuses etc I would end up having her come less often. I don't think with my kind of house she'd be expecting anything at all, but it's fair to say if she went to some big house twice a week in a posh area, she would be hoping for a bonus based on some replies here!

I gave mine two items from a hamper I won as a Christmas raffle prize. I told her that's what they were as I believe 'open' regifting - so people know you're being kind with the gift but not to feel indebted as it didn't cost you that. I said she could pick two, a couple will go to my mum, and a couple into work.
She seemed genuinely really happy and I was too.

I bet there are loads of people in this situation.
