To think that Xmas food shopping isn't a sodding family day out?

Just been to M&S for final food shop and the bloody place was over run with entire families shopping together. Just why? If the kids are old enough to be left then they shouldn't be traipsing around and getting in the way when the place is crowded as it is at this time of year.

And as for people who can't drive the right way round a one way car park: kindly fuck off and don't drive if you can't follow road signs.

That's all. Now can someone please pass the 🍷

I took my 15 year old this morning - because it’s takes two of it to carry it and there are only about 10 trolleys at our M and S.
They took the coin locks off them and they all got nicked.

fatphalange · 23/12/2024 17:53

Never cared about when/who other people do their shopping. Literally doesn't bother me. In shops, there are people= that's the way it is.

101Nutella · 23/12/2024 17:58

YABU You don’t have any more right to be in the shop taking up space than anyone else. Children are people too and have the right to take up space. Especially in a public place which is…open to the public!

I think the lack of tolerance people have for others is such a shame and making the world a much worse place for everyone else.

Although I do agree with op if you are taking your children to the supermarket on one of the busiest days of the year please control them, don't let them lay on the floor, don't let them go on skates/scooters etc, don't let them climb on equipment, don't let them run around, dont let them push the trolley if their to young to do so and actually watch them 4 seperate kids today where lost and 2 fell out of trolleys. And as the parent please don't spend an hour in there screaming at your kid at the top of your voice as that's annoying to.

Sunhatweather · 23/12/2024 18:27

How annoying that people might want to do things differently to you, OP. Or teach their children to function in modern society and crowds by example.
I mean, I don’t often take my DCs shopping with me, but who cares if others do?

cunoyerjudowel · 23/12/2024 18:29

No issue with entire families going but:

Control your off spring and if they are screaming the place down and there is an option please get the other parent to take them outside and. It stand in the que for a lifetime - fwiw if the adult is on their own with a screaming child I always let them go in front as it's clearly no fun for anyone and there is no other option.

Also the ammount of men who are walking behind with a face of doom, looking like they are there under duress, who just randomly stop in the middle of the isle / on their phone obstructing the flow of people gives me the rage

Jumpers4goalposts · 23/12/2024 18:34

YABU Christmas food shopping is the only time I drag my kids to M&S for a food shop everyone in our house gets a say in what goodies we get in for Christmas.

Meeatcheese · 23/12/2024 18:53

A pet hate, couples shopping together, stroking avocados and agonising over wine. Even worse with children, granny on her mobility scooter, teenagers just getting in the way. Old folk (of which I am one) ambling along aisles for hours. He/she who shops alone, shops best.

Blipette · 23/12/2024 18:54

Erugh imagine how it feels for the personal
shoppers going around with a giant trolley trying to negotiate the Walton’s with all 7 kids having a chit chat to the Brady bunch while they kids run riot round the aisles.

Have witnessed kids standing in the trolley which they fell backwards onto their heads at my last job. Both kids were screaming then threw up about ten minutes later. That is concussion. Paramedics were called. I don’t remember what happened for one of them as happened 30 minutes before my shift ended. The other went to hospital

Have said to parents whose kids stand in trolleys “do you want to waste the rest of the day in hospital?”

Honestly it's so dangerous they usually end up in hospital for it 1 of them did today as its a solid floor and the sound when they smack their head is horrific

Bridget05 · 23/12/2024 19:00

Or maybe, like myself and others in medical professions etc, who don't have time off at convenient times, might wish to hell grandma had thought to do her shopping a month ago, or you had left your kids at home, so those who have to work right up to the last minute and beyond, can actually get in and out without being part of your fun family outing or teenager budget training session....time and place dude !!!

asrl78 · 23/12/2024 19:13

TwinklyStarlight · 22/12/2024 15:01

YABU. They've as much right to be there as anyone else.

No-one is questioning anyone's human rights. The OP is ranting about people who feel the need to take the entire family to the supermarket at what is a very busy time of year and in doing so making conditions worse for everyone.

Babbahabba · 23/12/2024 19:15

I think it's bizarre. I can understand if you're a single parent but most of the people I see with kids are couples. Baffling.

asrl78 · 23/12/2024 19:19

I've just been to my local supermarket and it is fairly rammed, but I expect that two days before Christmas. My bugbear is not people bringing their whole family along, it is thoughtless gormless people with a phone glued to their ear not paying attention to their surroundings, or people apparently cooperating in parking trolleys and themselves in the optimal position to block the aisle (blockerheads), or people walking three abreast at a quarter of my walking pace, or when the one item I want on a quiet aisle is behind one person dithering about trying to choose between three different brands of something or other. I tend to avoid using supermarkets during peak rush day in my town, I am lucky I can shop late evening when it is much quieter.

"couples shopping together, stroking avocados..." Sounds like the opening scene to a porn film. 😆

asrl78 · 23/12/2024 19:25

The lack of tolerance is caused by a lack of thought, which is getting worse each year in the UK and has got a lot worse since people forgot how to be civilised when locked down. If you want people to be more tolerant, people have to start thinking and showing basic situational awareness, otherwise what you end up with is everyone on top of each other, antagonising each other, and in everyone's way, and the quality of life goes down down down.

OonaStubbs · 23/12/2024 19:32

Some people see shopping as a "family day out" instead of taking their children to the park, or a museum or nature sanctuary.

ShinyCaptain · 23/12/2024 19:37

Yes, Christmas shopping should be done fast by scowling, serious people, one per family, like in lockdown, and in Oceania.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 23/12/2024 19:38

It’s probably because people are busy, and shopping is done en route to or from something else which involves the family. I also quite like to bring a small person shopping with me, especially if we haven’t spent much time together in the week. We have chats in the car and enjoy choosing food together. OP, I’m afraid you sound a but miserable! If you find it all so stressful then it’s better to shop very early or late in the day, or shop online. There are too many intolerant people around these days.

Shop assistants want to have time to shop, too. And they deserve Christmas Eve with their families.
