To think that Xmas food shopping isn't a sodding family day out?

Just been to M&S for final food shop and the bloody place was over run with entire families shopping together. Just why? If the kids are old enough to be left then they shouldn't be traipsing around and getting in the way when the place is crowded as it is at this time of year.

And as for people who can't drive the right way round a one way car park: kindly fuck off and don't drive if you can't follow road signs.

That's all. Now can someone please pass the 🍷

Depends on the kid, but as a parent if I had the choice I would absolutely do the food shop solo 😂

wishuponamoon21 · 22/12/2024 15:17

My DH suggested we go together. I am leaving him and 6 month old at home - couldn't think of anything worse than dealing with christmas m&s with Mr browse a lot and Mr cry a lot 🤣

Bluesclues1 · 22/12/2024 15:22

It’s my pet hate too - how the fuck can that be enjoyable for anyone involved. The

I went to Smyths to get the kids some last minute Christmas presents at 8pm one evening last week - full of families with all the kids having tantrums.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 22/12/2024 15:24

DH and I are going to get the shop tomorrow am very early. DD 16 is insistent on coming with us as for some reason utterly unknown by me is ridiculously excited about it nothing to do with going for breakfast after I'm sure .

In fairness we will divide and conquer so she will be helping.

The place was absolutely rammed. It's 3 days before Christmas. Of course I would prefer my shopping trip to be easier. I'd also quite like not to have some kid nearly take me out with his swinging arms near the tills.

'Nearly taking you out'? 🤣🤣

Are you made of cardboard?

loveawineloveacrisp · 22/12/2024 15:25

@ShortyShorts well obviously not however I'd rather not get clouted round the head.

Why do you have any more right to be in a supermarket than a child does?

just unclench and you’ll feel much happier. What a bizarre thing to be uptight/annoyed about!

I loathe shopping - here you go: 🍷🍷🍷

SmellyBumMum · 22/12/2024 15:31

Yea, kids should just sit at home and play video games and not see how real world works to suit you! 🙄

Gwenhwyfar · 22/12/2024 15:31

"Why do you have any more right to be in a supermarket than a child does?

Probably because she's a paying customer.

I had to pop to Tesco for something I couldn't get in Lidl. I went when it was hammering it down in the hope not too many people had ventured out. Whilst it was busy, it wasn't horrendous but I did say to DH, upon my return, that people had clearly taken an extra person/people with them and they were standing around like obelisks in the aisles getting in the way!

If that was yesterday it may have been me and husband. When you live in a village and your local Tesco is minute the excitement of going to big Tesco at Christmas is immense.

@loveawineloveacrisp I 💯 agree and just cannot understand it unless people genuinely have no alternative. But you’ll get a million responses about disability, SEN, teaching kids to budget and that some families enjoy it - fair enough the first 2 but for the other 2 - not a chance!

Im going at 10pm tonight for the last bits - have all the essentials so if I don’t get it tonight- it ain’t happening!

Edited

10pm tonight?

What a strange attitude, sometimes I pay for the food shop, does that mean DH should wait outside?

thegirlwithemousyhair · 22/12/2024 15:33

Shopping in person just before Christmas day = my idea of hell for precisely those reasons.

I popped into asda last wednesday and I couldnt believe the number of people who seemed to be treating it as some sort of a 'day out' - standing about blocking the aisles and admiring everything. I take a list, grab what I need and get out as fast as humanly possible.

Nc546888 · 22/12/2024 15:33

I bet you’re the sort of person who doesn’t think children should be allowed on planes.

so kids aren’t allowed in supermarkets any more…hmmm

K0OLA1D · 22/12/2024 15:33

Me and DP always do the shopping together. I'm disabled and we both want different things. I don't get in the way and neither does he. The kids haven't come since they fitted in the trolly.

CreationNat1on · 22/12/2024 15:34

Bless, the spirit of Xmas

PurpleThistle7 · 22/12/2024 15:34

We do most of our shop online but the kids love going on one trip and picking out the fun snacks and extra bits. They're allowed and we all enjoy it 🤷🏻‍♀️

devilspawn · 22/12/2024 15:37

I went to big Sainsburys today and for unknown reasons they'd completely changed the queuing system starting today and the staff were very rude to everyone who didn't know about it, how they expected people to know they'd suddenly done this I have no idea (there were no signs).

Anyway their system blocked half the freezer section (no chance of getting to any free from or veggie alternatives) and slowed down all the queues massively, I went to self checkout in the end (no queue, big trolley-sized ones) and was through in 5 mins.

Still I suppose having 2 extra staff stand there yelling at customers means 2 extra people are employed even though they are causing more problems and taking space people could queue in.

Couldn't get everything I wanted in Sainsburys and kids running screaming everywhere so went to B&M where I found everything (stuffing, selection boxes, gravy, alcohol etc) in under 10 mins and not crowded at all. Plus obviously a lot cheaper for branded stuff.

Reminds me why I stopped shopping in Sainsburys.

You enjoy queuing and people ramming trolleys into you?

Simonjt · 22/12/2024 15:38

I took my husbands grandma to do hers today, he had a work thing so it was me, a 93 year old, a three year old and a nine year old, at least the nine year old was useful. The three year old was bored and did nothing but moan, grandma apparently knew every single human in the shop and had to talk to every single of them. She had a list, but had to personally choose each item so I couldn’t park her in an aisle and get all the bits myself. She didn’t have her reading glasses on, my Swedish is still a bit ropey, so we relied on the nine year old to read the descriptions and to make sure no one dies (allergies). I forgot bags too, and the supermarket had run out of bags, so that added to the lovely fun day out.

@TorroFerney It was this morning and it was my local smaller Tesco, not the Tesco Extra store where there's a lot more space to get around obstructions.

Well that's just tough really, so what if it's 3 days before Christmas? Other people exist and don't need to adjust their shopping habits to suit you.

I'd also quite like not to have some kid nearly take me out with his swinging arms near the tills.

That was one child, not a reason to suggest they all stay at home though.
