Can you put air in car tyres with toddler in the car seat?

Can’t see any advice online!

OP posts:

Depending on toddler lung capacity, I think that an air pump would be better.

and the toddler would find it easier to get out of the car seat to put air in the tyres

Chemenger · 22/12/2024 09:59

People who think the weight of a toddler will affect tyre pressure - do you inflate your tyres with a full or empty petrol tank? Do you take everything out of the boot? The inaccuracy in the gauge on the compressor will be far more significant than minor weight changes.

Ladylangstrand · 22/12/2024 10:06

Sounds like an excellent opportunity to start teaching your child car maintenance. Then once she has learned how to do it you and dp can sit in the car while she cracks on.

Show her how to crack the bonnet and check the oil while you're at it. Then in a couple of months she'll be ready to tackle changing the windscreen wipers and bulbs.

Wonderi · 22/12/2024 10:11

I’ve always inflated my tyres with people in the car.

It’s a good question that I’d never thought of.

I would never change a tyre with someone in the car though.

1.The extra weight may cause the car to come back down (probably not possible if jacked up correctly).
2.And I was always told to get everyone out and move them to safety if I’m on the side of the road.

User820825 · 22/12/2024 09:13

I was going to suggest one of us did it if better for dd not to be in car

Right so just do that then. There isn't a need to 'suggest' it.

I don't see why you would need to discuss that with the other person.

Either go without the toddler. Or get the toddler out while the other person does the tyres.

Assuming the OP is planning on filling the tyres at a petrol station I'd imagine any risk to the toddler would be much higher out of the vehicle! Not that I can imagine what any risk would actually be staying in it.

YarkYark · 22/12/2024 10:15

Do you all think if you measure the the pressure with the wheel on the car, lets say its 30psi, then jack the car up and take the wheel off and measure the pressure, it will be different? No, it will be 30psi. The tyre is flexible; the volume stays the same as the weight changes; the pressure stays the same.

Ok, start really overloading the car and that may start to not be true, but in terms of having a baby (or a few passengers) in the car - nah, irrelevent.

Wonderi · 22/12/2024 10:17

CranfordScones · 22/12/2024 09:51

It's a sensible question - I presume the OP is suggesting that the extra weight may put more force on the tyres and thereby affect the pressure reading. It probably does but not enough to make a difference in the case of a toddler.

If you read your car manual, many tell you to increase the tyre pressures when the vehicle is heavily laden.

Other responses are the usual mnet level of being dismissive - perhaps OP just thinks about things at a deeper level...

Thank you for showing kindness and some common sense.

I absolutely hate these sorts of threads because posters use it as a way to feel superior and be rude.

None of us know everything.
It’s never ok to look down your nose at someone, just because they don’t know something that you do.

I’m sure there are plenty of things that OP knows that these posters don’t.

Asking these sorts of questions is how people learn.
If you don’t know, then ask.

It’s just a shame there are so many rude people on here trying to make OP feel bad about asking.

Yes, and you can also put fuel in the tank with toddler in the car. You can even <clutches pearls> pay for your fuel with toddler in the car, because said car will not explode in your absence (despite Mumsnet doomsday theories).

Well I’m going to clutch away because though work I’ve dealt with incidents of the deaths of children through cars that have seemingly ‘randomly’ set alight, more than one of which was at a petrol station. Don’t be so ignorant.

Sometimes a question is so bafflingly odd then "huh? What?" is a perfectly reasonable response.

It had no context as well. OP was apparently wondering if the weight of the child would affect the tyres. Still a bit bonkers but at least vaguely thought out but they didn't say that. So it was a reasonable assumption was that they thought it was unsafe for a child to be in the car. Which is silly.

So we shouldn't put children in cars at all then?

@Wonderi "I absolutely hate these sorts of threads because posters use it as a way to feel superior and be rude."

I mean you are not wrong but you could be describing 98% of threads here.

MixedCouple2 · 22/12/2024 10:46

Yes DP does it all the time with me amd the kids in the car never been an issue......

“huh?” Or “what?” are not perfectly reasonable responses at all.

If a customer at work asked you a question you wouldn’t reply with that, so why is it ok just because you’re behind a keyboard and anonymous.

If you don’t know the answer then don’t reply.

If you do know the answer then say it.

If you must put a rude or sarcy reply then at least answer the question first.

Replies simply saying “Jesus wept” or 🙄 aren’t helpful and they’re only there to try and make OP feel bad about herself.

No, you should not be leaving them unattended whilst you go and pay for your fuel.

Why on earth not if they’re strapped in to a locked car?

OfMiceandWomen · 22/12/2024 11:07

I have been sat in the car when my husband has put air in the tyres.

Oh I do apologise, I didn't read any replies before noticing the thread police were already here!
And in my case my 'huh?' and gif WERE appropriate because that's literally the thought and face I had when reading the OPs question...

MyBirthdayMonth · 22/12/2024 11:33

I'd put the toddler on the roof rack for a better view.

And you felt the need to take the time to respond, fill up the thread with nonsense and make OP feel bad about herself instead of just thinking it and moving on, why exactly?

Balloonhearts · 22/12/2024 11:43

No you're better to strap her to the roof.

I'm sure more children die in road traffic accidents than are burned to death in mysteriously exploding cars. But you have the stats, don't you??
