How much have you spent on Christmas food?

Apologies if a thread already exists I did a search but my phone is playing up 🤷‍♀️

After coming back from shopping earlier I seem to have spend an extortionate amount of money on food! Not as much as the person in front of me - theirs was nearly £400 (admittedly was Waitrose but I was seduced by their pudding on social media) but still I’ve done a quick check..

Butchers Christmas Pack - £90
Additional turkey £24

M&S - £35
Waitrose - £42
Tesco - £160 ish over a couple of shops (ham/leg of lamb/beef roasting joint and some other festive stuff)
Aldi £52

This is for 4 people for 4 days/meals and then an additional 2 people for one meal.

I am pretty sure I have forgotten some bits as well.

We don’t really drink so have topped up on soft drinks.

Next year I am doing a serious effort on cutting down my costs.

About £350 for 3 days.

including a large turkey and a rib of beef. This is for 3 separate meals and some picky bits.

if you include alcohol probably another £150 on top but we won’t drink all that and it will last a good while 😀

airingcupboards · 21/12/2024 20:03

I spent £80 at Aldi and will spend £40 at the butchers. I got a panettone from M&S for a tenner too but we don't entertain.

avaritablevampire · 21/12/2024 20:08

0.... big shop on Tuesday...hopefully they'll be some food left in the shops, otherwise it'll be beans on toast on Christmas Day!

RestYeMerryGentlewomen · 21/12/2024 20:08

About 300, I’m cooking 2 Christmas dinners one in 23 and on the actual day. Though chicken and pork for the 23.

InfoSecInTheCity · 21/12/2024 20:09

This year is weird because we've spent hardly anything and it makes me feel like I've forgotten something.

I'm on Mounjaro and decided against taking a break for Xmas so no extra food, DH and DD don't like a roast dinner and are vege so they've decided they want a party food buffet of Iceland beige stuff and cake.

And we're at in-laws Boxing Day.

So really just a normal shopping week with a bit more freezer food.

Porcuporpoise · 21/12/2024 20:11

Hundreds but we've got 3 days of the Roast Beast Feast with various relatives and the leftovers should see us through to New Year.

Inmydreams88 · 21/12/2024 20:13

We are a family of 2 adults and an 11 month old, having Christmas dinner at home just us and have spent around £130. That will keep us going until the 28th when I’ll do my next food shop.

StarMincePies · 21/12/2024 20:14

£450 so far and I'm horrified. We are hosting for two meals and each want the full roast and trimmings. So that's £200 on turkey, stuffing and pigs in blankets alone.

I have to pick up the booze on Monday and that's not paid for yet...

PianoPiarno · 21/12/2024 20:16

The trick is to just not add it up... 👍😳🤦‍♀️

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 21/12/2024 20:16

Blimey, I have 15 people for Christmas dinner and I've only spent £200!! 🤣

DollopOfFun · 21/12/2024 20:17

About £350, for the big day for 6 people, and buffet tea for 10-12, Plus the snacky stuff and all the extras.

In the previous few years I've hosted more people, yet it doesn't seem much cheaper this year

QwestSprout · 21/12/2024 20:19

£62. Yule log, chocolates and two tins of Mutti tomatoes.

Suzuki76 · 21/12/2024 20:20

We spent about £150 yesterday but we do need to feed 3 of us 3 meals a day from now until Boxing Day, when we will go to stay with family. On actual Christmas Dinner - £13 turkey and maybe £15 on trimmings like stuffing, pigs in blankets, dripping roasties, fresh gravy and 15p veggies. Pudding was £3 from Lidl! Then maybe another £50 on snacks to take us to New Year, Advocaat and Baileys. We're not hosting anyone.

tillytoodles1 · 21/12/2024 20:29

Nothing yet. I spend Christmas Day and Boxing day with my daughter and son in law. She buys and cooks it all and I pay a third, and bring my own alcohol.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 21/12/2024 20:30

Around £400 3 people for 2 days, 6 people for 3 days. Some alcohol Morrisons and Lidl

itsjustbiology · 21/12/2024 20:34

279.63 for boxing day 3 people and regular picky food for a few days,,then 680.00 for 7 people at the pub for xmas dinner. No drinks yet.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/12/2024 20:34

Including all booze for 4 adults ( Xmas and boxing day only )3 adults rest of time -and for all food from today till Saturday ( when we go away) I will have spent about £400 (£140 on booze) in total - and my FIL who is 85 and with us all that period contributed £180 of that - gawd bless him!!

princesspadam · 21/12/2024 20:38

So far I've spent £150

We're out for dinner Xmas dinner
And away from 28th

Coldandunderablanket · 21/12/2024 20:40

We are a family of 5 and hosting another 3 people on Xmas eve. There will be 15 on Xmas day to feed but we are going to stay with family on boxing day (but will bring some buffet food)

I have spent about £100 already on a turkey and booze but am going shopping tomorrow morning where I anticipate I will blow about £200

So £300 in total.

lemmein · 21/12/2024 20:40

£140 Sainsbury’s Christmas dinner order (I normally order from M&S but they spectacularly fucked my order last year!)

£240 for the regular shop with Christmas bits.

I wish I'd saved throughout the year instead of paying for everything out of Novembers pay. I never learn.

SkankingWombat · 21/12/2024 20:42

Turkey £60
Other meat from butchers £60
Morrisons £115
M&S £25
Waitrose £50
Lidl £15
Alcohol bought weeks ago and put away £40

That will do us as a family of 4 (and 3 cats who will demand their share of the turkey!) for a week plus some leftovers for the freezer eg leftover turkey to go in curries/stir fries etc and includes wine and ingredients for dishes to take to family celebrations on boxing day. In addition to this, we have a very nice cheese hamper that DH was given through work, so I haven't needed to pay for any cheeses beyond bog standard cheddar for cooking.

Usually I can manage the following week with just a top up of bread, fruit & veg alongside whatever is left, so I'm hoping it will be the same this year, as then the average spend across the 2 weeks won't be so bad.

RomainingToBeSeen · 21/12/2024 20:49

All in, including alcohol, probably close to £1000. We have 10x teens/ adults for 5x days. Have been buying things over the last few months, filling the garage and freezer and trying not to think about it. 🤣

Ariela · 21/12/2024 20:50

All I've bought 'extra' is turkey and a Xmas pud (which I got weeks ago when it was on offer (Waitrose), 2 tubes of Pringles, DH has bought 2 tubs of chocolates and some other snacks. I've not paid and collected the turkey yet (butchers shop) - that'll be £70, free range bronze turkey. Indeed I've perhaps spent less than an average week, as I'm skipping a weekly supermarket shop (went last Saturday), have milk and bread on order from village shop to collect when I get the turkey but won't go supermarket shopping till after Christmas, even this time next week perhaps. But we have no visitors planned.

Patienceinshortsupply · 21/12/2024 20:55

M & S food order (turkey crown, sides, veggie main) = £80
Butcher (beef) = £72
Ocado main shop = £320
Waitrose back up shop (normal food shop) = £150

Cooking for 18 on Christmas Day and they'll all likely be back to raid the fridge over the coming days. Last year, we had no food by boxing day evening so not repeating that mistake again.

avaritablevampire · 21/12/2024 20:08

0.... big shop on Tuesday...hopefully they'll be some food left in the shops, otherwise it'll be beans on toast on Christmas Day!

We are going to do the shop on Monday so we have a better chance and less panic buyers (Maybe)
