How much have you spent on Christmas food?

Apologies if a thread already exists I did a search but my phone is playing up 🤷‍♀️

After coming back from shopping earlier I seem to have spend an extortionate amount of money on food! Not as much as the person in front of me - theirs was nearly £400 (admittedly was Waitrose but I was seduced by their pudding on social media) but still I’ve done a quick check..

Butchers Christmas Pack - £90
Additional turkey £24

M&S - £35
Waitrose - £42
Tesco - £160 ish over a couple of shops (ham/leg of lamb/beef roasting joint and some other festive stuff)
Aldi £52

This is for 4 people for 4 days/meals and then an additional 2 people for one meal.

I am pretty sure I have forgotten some bits as well.

We don’t really drink so have topped up on soft drinks.

Next year I am doing a serious effort on cutting down my costs.

£500 but that's for 7 adults for several days.
Includes everything for Xmas dinner, buffet for Xmas supper, salmon and prawn salad on Xmas eve. Big steak pie for booking day. Trifle, lemon torte, Xmas pud, sticky toffee pud (all home made) smoked salmon blinis for 10 on Xmas morning, some alcohol.
Still need some salad.

BebbanburgIsMine · 21/12/2024 22:55

There's just DD and me for Christmas dinner and we're not extravagant, we just have chicken breast fillets for ours, so most likely will spend less than £30 for the two of us.

We're not drinkers so we'll just make sure we have plenty of juice, already got two sticky toffee puddings in the cupboard.

ToffeePennie · 21/12/2024 23:03

£150 for 4 of us, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and 27th.
Loads of picky bits with that and “alcohol” (I don’t drink so Buck’s Fizz for DH and kids, crate of coke for me and some orange juice and lemonade)

LePetitMaman · 21/12/2024 23:05

We've done £300 in Aldi. Another £200 in Waitrose. I've picked up probably £100 of other bits and pieces.

£600 all in not bad considering. Food and drink for 2 adults, one large teen, 2 gannet 4yos, then three more adults Christmas Day. Plus our food from today to Christmas Eve.

We've gone daft and over £1k before. And it just doesn't get eaten, and I feel a bit embarrassed and gluttonous when I see the waste.

I'd actually pare it down further, but DH is terrible over food spends for occasions.

Saschka · 21/12/2024 23:08

£375, but we are catering for 8 tomorrow, had my family round this evening, and are doing our own family Christmas on 25th. And also have food in for the rest of the week, and had to stock up on washing powder etc (so not only food in the delivery). Also went to Waitrose, I usually go to Sainsbury’s and spend £90-100 for the week.

DowntheDrainpipe · 21/12/2024 23:10

Not very much. We do take away on Christmas Eve and reheat it Xmas Day usually. Easy, delicious, no fuss. £60. We usually get gifted chocolate and the odd food item so we’ve spent maybe an additional £40 across a bottle of alcohol and some random bits. It’s just two of us.

WonderingWanda · 21/12/2024 23:12

So much I don't even want to think about it. Even just for the Christmas lunch it's quite pricey.

ShortyShorts · 21/12/2024 23:15

Just under £300 for 4 adults and 2 dogs.

But some of that is mixed with the 'normal shop' and there's a fair bit of booze there too.

JockTamsonsBairns · 21/12/2024 23:19

I did the big food shop for Xmas earlier this evening, and spent £110.
There are 3 adults and two older teens in our family, plus we are hosting MIL from tomorrow until Boxing Day.

We'll eat "normally" for every meal, except our Christmas dinner.
I'll need to go on Tuesday to get bread/salad stuff etc. And, we haven't yet bought any alcohol - so probably add another £50 to that?
I already have a well stocked freezer, so I'm able to make meals from what I've already got in.

Mashroom · 21/12/2024 23:19

We got gifted a hamper with wine and chocolates and wine from neighbours

i have bought stuffing, potatoes, cranberry, veg (prepped and frozen)

I will buy a large fresh turkey and ham, desserts and party food but I don’t expect to spend a tonne more than a normal shop really as we tend to eat the turkey for a few days (eg curry) so I am hoping 200 euro all in

caringcarer · 21/12/2024 23:26

I've just lost count but probably too much. I've still got to get raspberries and pomegranate seeds for a desert on Monday. I'm afraid if I leave it to Tuesday they will be sold out and I won't get them. I'm not getting anything else now.

RM2013 · 21/12/2024 23:29

£180 and we are hosting Christmas dinner at ours for my parents. However my mum had already bought a turkey and gammon joint so only had to get the other bits. We are visiting family on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day so didn’t need to go too overboard on other stuff

BellissimoGecko · 21/12/2024 23:32

StarMincePies · 21/12/2024 20:14

£450 so far and I'm horrified. We are hosting for two meals and each want the full roast and trimmings. So that's £200 on turkey, stuffing and pigs in blankets alone.

I have to pick up the booze on Monday and that's not paid for yet...

How?? How many people are you cooking for? 50?

Rescue2024 · 21/12/2024 23:34

I’m not sure
its £80 today in the farm shop
all meats to collect Monday and then the seafood order
i have loads prepped in the freezer
all cheeses and extras bought

£520 so far here or there

Motomum23 · 21/12/2024 23:36

😱 family of 6 - about £100 for 3 days - turkey will do 2 days meals plus loads of sarnies. Make your own pigs so much nicer and Xmas eve is always pizza and Xmas film. 2 boxes of quality street and a home made choc trifle
Nothing else unusual in our shop

5foot5 · 21/12/2024 23:40

Hard to calculate accurately as we have been getting stuff in and baking/making over a period of time.

We will be four adults from 23rd December to 3rd January. I have had a turkey, joint of beef, joint of gammon and a big piece of salmon in freezer for a while. I guess that's over £100 right there.

DH did most of the rest of the shopping yesterday and spent £360ish.

DD and I will just have to get the fruit and veg on Monday, a few more quid I guess.

We have made our own cake, pudding, mince pies, stuffing and a few other things so I don't know how to calculate that.

I don't really want to guesstimate how much we have spent on the drink! Some of it we have had in for a while and have been saving it. I think we have 20 nice reds and 12 decent whites. Also 3 bottles of fizz (one of those we won in a raffle) and 2 half bottles of pudding wine.

Rescue2024 · 21/12/2024 23:40

I’ve home made pigs in blankets, halloumi in blankets
sausage rolls
gravy
meat in gravy
and loads more

we are 5 adults so seafood is a must, some like alcohol and we need our special occasion desserts, starters, mains.

HouseMoveHopeful · 21/12/2024 23:45

£6 crackers
£10 Christmas pud
£10 Christmas bombe
£25 turkey
£2 veg
£3 sauces
£3 pigs in blankets
£10 for crisps etc for after.
£2 breakfast pastries
No booze this year as we’ve been given a nice bottle or two from work.

£73 total. Good grief that’s a lot for one day for 6 people, but how on earth are people spending £100’s?

CatStoleMyChocolate · 21/12/2024 23:48

Fuck all so far as Sainsburys website just fucked up my order amendments so we are looking at a very cheap delivery indeed tomorrow and having to do a full shop on Monday 😫

As it’s just 4 of us and we don’t do a turkey dinner, I’d guess we spend about £50 extra on nice snacks, extras and drinks (mainly soft drinks).

Wildywondrous · 21/12/2024 23:49

I'm amazed at how much people spend, our turkey was £22, veg less than a fiver and I already have things like oxo cubes and stuffing in the cupboard.

There will be 4 adults and 2 kids.

Fluffyhoglets · 21/12/2024 23:53

Spent nearly 400 in supermarkets the last few days. 8 for xmas dinner. 12 for family meal. Food for boxing day buffet.
Includes some food for the days running up to Christmas day and alcohol but not meat as someone else buys that.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 21/12/2024 23:56

DH and I are both on Mounjaro and have 2 young DDs who like beige freezer food the most. We haven't even thought of food shopping yet and cannot imagine getting anything extravagant or even resembling 'normal' Christmas food. Good thing we're not hosting anyone this year!

Rescue2024 · 21/12/2024 23:56

HouseMoveHopeful · 21/12/2024 23:46

How!

It’s easy
farm shop chutneys and pickles £20
veg £30 enough to include with freezer prep in our freezer
still need to know what the meat and seafood order will be but I’m betting £200 for both
add top up shops and it is what it is for our Christmas, grown adults, no children

Wigtopia · 21/12/2024 23:58

Howmanymoredays · 21/12/2024 21:03

Same as a normal weekly shop. Don't eat any additional meals per day just because it's the last week of December. And don't buy into any of the Christmas gluttony.

i was reading these thinking I was the only one 🤭
