Why do bin vans flash and shout so obnoxiously?

They're travelling at 1mph supervised by 4/6 men and it's 6:30 am. Who the fuck is in danger of being run over exactly?!

Give the guys a break - it's a huge vehicle with dangerous moving parts that devour the rubbish!

EarlyBird12345 · 21/12/2024 07:44

They are. It’s the beginning if the rush hour, in the dark, and they are crossing the street dragging bins and unable to easily jump out of the way of traffic.

ApriCat · 21/12/2024 07:45

Who the fuck is in danger of being run over exactly?

My stupid cat?

Or possibly my half-asleep husband, who has form for reversing off a driveway into a truck parked across it.

Exactly. I have seen people speed past them really dangerously.

They do a job few of us would consider, and keeping them safe is a priority surely?

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 21/12/2024 07:47

Think of it like a useful alarm clock for those people who've forgotten to put the bin out.

This made me laugh. As a dog owner I always think cats are super intelligent but maybe not all of them? 😂

LizzieSiddal · 21/12/2024 07:49

Leave them be. They do a brilliant job which not many people would be prepared to do.

Picklewicklepickle · 21/12/2024 07:49

Not to be a downer but a child was killed by one near my parents’ house, it does happen.

Who is in danger?

Dickhead cyclists and phone zombie pedestrians who are oblivious to everything around them.

You'd soon be whining about if they didnt have warning lights and you were run over/hit by one.

Would you drive in the dark with no headlights on down an empty street/road/motorway? NO. Same principle here - its about being seen. JFC.

Unbelievable that you even needed to ask.

Exactly this.

Sinkintotheswamp · 21/12/2024 07:51

Stupid people are at risk of being run over or colliding with the truck. And the waste collection team themselves are at risk if some idiot tries to overtake while they're trying to cross the road with a wheelie bin.
They can flash and beep away as much as they like.

BasilParsley · 21/12/2024 07:51

At least it's 6.30am. On my bin day, the first wagon rocks up on my street around 4.30-5am to empty the big bins of the nursing home across the road. Then another one turns up any time after 6am to empty the ordinary household bins...

But I have to say I am grateful for them doing that horrid job

Same here last year.

CrazyGoatLady · 21/12/2024 08:01

Well this is a middle class Hyacinth Bucket problem if I ever saw one.

"Could you just do your horrid plebby jobs quietly please? Do stop lowering the tone of the street while you provide those essential services"

shoulde · 21/12/2024 07:55

wtf?

twobluehorses · 21/12/2024 08:05

The men themselves are also at risk. They are running about in the dark with a very large dangerous vehicle. Men (because it is mainly men) have been killed on the job. Some crushed in the van itself (although it happens less frequently now)

Santaclawws · 21/12/2024 08:07

I suspect it helps protect the bin men too, they're running from side to side of the road collecting the bins sometimes getting ahead before the vehicle gets there.

Ifailed · 21/12/2024 08:07

Why don't you get a job on the bins and show them how to do it properly?

MidnightPatrol · 21/12/2024 08:07

I actually nearly got squashed by one quite recently.

Their fault rather than mine - but as high up and large vehicle, I don’t think the drivers can see much around the van.

And then they can be manoeuvring in quite small spaces with lots of people, parked cars etc

HelplessSoul · 21/12/2024 08:09

shoulde · 21/12/2024 07:55

Comments like this prove precisely why bin lorries are well lit up and illuminated - to be able to be seen by the ignorant.

"Didnt realise that was even possible" - fucking hell. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Is there an award we can give you for that statement?

Fuck me. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🙄

You didn’t realise being run over and killed was possible?
