Why do bin vans flash and shout so obnoxiously?

They're travelling at 1mph supervised by 4/6 men and it's 6:30 am. Who the fuck is in danger of being run over exactly?!

As someone not infested with rats or drowning in rubbish i will take the noise and flashing lights happily.

ClearFruit · 21/12/2024 13:03

A young girl was killed in my hometown (Coventry) by one a few years ago. They're very dangerous.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 21/12/2024 13:12

Years ago, bin lorries were often painted dark colours and might have had one or two amber revolving beacons, which were susceptible to damage, due to the nature of the vehicles. The fact that these dangerous machines are now much more visible, to anyone who encounters or works with them, is a very good thing indeed.

None of those people were even out of bed on our street when the van was here.

And 'shouting' referred to the vehicle shouting 'vehicle reversing' over and over. Not the humans working hard

Whopdefuckindoo for your street then.

Other streets will have hazards ergo, those warning lights/sounds are required.

I cant believe someone can continue to dig in on this and not realise how daft they sound.

Especially given the previous posts in this thread about not realising people can get killed by such vehicles. Staggering.

You've misunderstood.

I clearly don't think the actual workers designed and made the obnoxious vans themselves... or indeed want to work in such noise!

They probably didn't design them. But they also probably appreciate that the lights and noise have an important safety function both for them and others and aren't just there to annoy people who would rather not be disturbed by the council performing its duties.

Probably more people around at that time than you realise - a lot of people heading off for early starts at work, people walking their dogs before they head off to work themselves.

And the bin lorry/crew will continue working throughout the morning - including during the school run and when the elderly are off to do their shopping.

KeepYaHeadUp · 21/12/2024 14:28

Our council has recently put out calls for people to drive carefully around bin Lorrie's after 3 nasty crashes. One was caused by someone mounting the pavement to overtake and hitting a bin man causing him to be in a coma for weeks and having life changing injuries. The other 2 were people not paying attention and hitting the Lorries. One pinned a bin man against the lorry. That's WITH the obnoxious noises and lights so I dread to think what the risk would be without them

A 12 year old died in Coventry after being hit by a massive bin lorry. YABU.

Probably because the complaints from people not getting their bins emptied because there isn’t time to do everyones if they don’t start til 9.30 outnumbers the complaints from people held up for a couple of minutes on the school run.

why don’t you get together with the neighbours and offer to take your bins to the waste facility yourself when it’s more convenient to you?

Yes dear, I'm sure you're right. Confused

Or, alternatively, between 8am and quarter past 8, they could collect the bins from any number of the other streets in our town instead of the busy main road leading up to a school with getting on for 2,000 pupils and staff, all of whom are making their way there at that time. Oh and before you say the pupils should be walking, we are in a small town in a largely rural area and hundreds of the pupils arrive from the surrounding villages by school buses. Lots of buses.

I saw a binman hit by a car the sped past a truck. We were on a bus and had to give statements it was awful. One woman was hysterical and kept screaming.

What a rubbish council

It may not be the council that runs the wagons or decides on the routes that the lorries take.

EarthyMamma · 21/12/2024 23:25

On a side note, and completely irrelevant, when I lived in St Helens, I loved the saying, "Hast bin man bin Mam?"

Always repeated in the vicinity of any bin lorry by all, regardless of age.

Still makes me smile.😊

Our bin men here in Wales are great, polite and helpful to the lady with bed head and pyjamas scurrying up the road with the food waste bin!

The benefits of getting older so I have no shame. 😳

Never ever heard it called a dustcart, and I’m not young, and have lived in a number of different UK regions.

always been the bin lorry. It’s a lorry what deals with bins, it doesn’t collect dust.

Dustbins. It deals with dustbins. Hence “my old man’s a dustman”, etc etc.

I’d say a dustcart was that small trolley that street sweepers push about though.

Right. So you know the movements of everyone on your street do you?

Also the bin lorry doesn’t just go to your street does it.

Why not admit you were wrong about this and a bit dim instead of doubling down and making yourself look even worse

Just as a matter of curiosity, when did we start saying bin lorry instead of dustcart? Definitely showing my age here, I still say dustcart 😆

Yes, I am in NE London suburb and it was dustcart when I was growing up here (1950s/60s)

Ifailed · 22/12/2024 12:44

If you've read Our Mutual Friend, there's quite a few references to 'dust heaps'. This was whatever households threw out, but mainly ashes from fireplaces. These were scoured for anything useful, rags, bone, metal etc. The coal ash was quite valuable as it was used to make bricks, and Victorian London used lots of bricks.
