Why do bin vans flash and shout so obnoxiously?

They're travelling at 1mph supervised by 4/6 men and it's 6:30 am. Who the fuck is in danger of being run over exactly?!

ImRonBurgandy · 21/12/2024 08:12

It's the most dangerous activity done by a local authority

OCDmama · 21/12/2024 08:13

Are you this dim in every day life?

DirtyFencePanel · 21/12/2024 08:13

The lights help keep the driver safe too and help with them being able to see what they are doing with the bins. It’s a relatively dangerous job for both the driver and general public.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/12/2024 08:14

We live at the top of a steep hill with a lot of parking issues and very dumb drivers. Our bin guys need to use all the noise and flashing lights they can to keep everyone safe as they do their (essential) job.

CyranoDeBergerQuack · 21/12/2024 08:15

Gosh, I didn't know that bin vans could talk, let alone shout.
And where do they find such big dirty mackintoshes?

shoulde · 21/12/2024 08:15

CrazyGoatLady · 21/12/2024 08:01

Well this is a middle class Hyacinth Bucket problem if I ever saw one.

"Could you just do your horrid plebby jobs quietly please? Do stop lowering the tone of the street while you provide those essential services"

You've misunderstood.

I clearly don't think the actual workers designed and made the obnoxious vans themselves... or indeed want to work in such noise!

This is a rubbish post

helpfulperson · 21/12/2024 08:16

2 children in Scotland killed last year. As a PP said it is probably the most dangerous thing a LA does as well as being the most unpleasant, underappreciated job.

As others have said it it high risk work and the noises and lights will have been deemed necessary following risk assessment. Maybe become qualified as a health and safety specialist if you think you can do better? It’ll only take a few years of extremely demanding study.

Why don't you get a job on the bins and show them how to do it properly?

Do this.

see how safe you feel in a narrow road running across it from behind a big lorry with a wheelie bin, trying to avoid impatient road users pissed off at you for being in their way.

who then take to forums and social media about the noise you make and the flashing lights you have in an attempt to keep them and yourselves safe from the big vehicle with limited vision capable of squashing nearly everything.

then you to your employers/take to social media because their bins weren’t emptied because some twat parked stupidly so you couldn’t get your lorry down their road.

Not having your bin emptied is and incredible inconvenience, maggots, smell etc.

go show them how to do it properly.

nationalsausagefund · 21/12/2024 08:20

I’d go to the ends of the earth for our bin men. I wouldn’t want their job, hauling rubbish in the pissing rain, snow, sleet; at speed; in the dark. Our road is not brilliantly lit, it’s single-file traffic between parked cars and if both sides haven’t tucked in their wing mirrors you can’t pass through yet bellends still go speeding up and down; these men are dashing criss-cross back and forth to do a job not many people want. Let them have their flashy lights.

Plus! Small children LOVE it and I love bin day because it makes DS so happy, and even on the worst weather day our bin men stop and give him a wave and a toot.

LlynTegid · 21/12/2024 08:20

At that time of the morning, there will be people about who are on drugs or still drunk, so some form of warning is needed.

I do wonder outside the depths of winter whether rubbish collections need to be in darkness though.

They probably prefer the lights and noise to Sharon in her suv or Dave in his bmw taking one of them out because they didn’t realise it was a bin lorry and wasn’t looking for someone crossing the road with a wheelie bin.

Iheartmysmart · 21/12/2024 08:29

I remember walking home from school one day many years ago before the bin lorries had all the warning lights and sounds and seeing the aftermath of someone who had been run over by one. It was pretty horrific.

Our bin men are great. Always cheerful and chatty. My dog used to love watching them empty the bins and they’d always make a fuss of him when they saw us out on walks. When I had to have the dog put to sleep last year, one of the bin men put a card through my door saying how sorry they all were and they’d miss him.

shoulde · 21/12/2024 07:55

Oh. Didn't realise that was even possible

Sorry? You don't think it's possible for a child to be run over by a bin lorry?
I would agree it would be rather incredible if a child was run over by a snow-mobile in Biggleswade high street...

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
People are capable of doing drugs or drinking at 3pm
Some posts on this thread are hilarious!

DepartingRadish · 21/12/2024 08:41

@Iheartmysmart My Dad's dog is the same - the bin collectors round his way adore her. When she hears the lorry coming up the road, she goes out and sits by the gate to wait for them. They always make a big fuss of her and give her a biscuit.

TempuraCustard · 21/12/2024 08:43

Picklewicklepickle · 21/12/2024 07:49

Not to be a downer but a child was killed by one near my parents’ house, it does happen.

And this is why.

They reverse. They're heavy. The staff are busy loading and working hard. It can be dark. Wet. Poor visibility. Kids going to school. People half awake as they've just woken up.

TempuraCustard · 21/12/2024 08:46

shoulde · 21/12/2024 07:55

You didn't realise it was even possible? What?
How did you think it wasn't possible? Have you seen a bin lorry?

Goag · 21/12/2024 08:48

I’ve been a bin (wo)man in the past! It’s a huge vehicle and travels down residential areas and stop start stop start irratically, you want children, those who might be deaf or struggle with hearing, those who aren’t looking etc etc to be able to see and hear the giant thing, plus you have workers suddenly darting out behind the back of it suddenly, it’s to make everyone aware of the vehicle and of the workers. Early mornings are busy even at 6:30 people going to work etc

Wolfpa · 21/12/2024 08:50

There was a lad round here who went missing on a night out the assumption was that he was sleeping in a bin , didn’t wake up and then got thrown away with the rubbish. The noise obviously didn’t work on this one but I have always assumed that it acts as a warning for anyone who is sleeping

GretchenWienersHair · 21/12/2024 08:50

LizzieSiddal · 21/12/2024 07:49

Leave them be. They do a brilliant job which not many people would be prepared to do.

She’s talking about the trucks, not the people 😅

Cantonet · 21/12/2024 08:55

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 21/12/2024 07:47

Think of it like a useful alarm clock for those people who've forgotten to put the bin out.

It was for me yesterday. I dashed out dragging my bins with extreme bed hair to the amusement of one lovely young binman yesterday. He then waited for me while I retrieved my recycling from the house too. So so kind 🌟

I don’t think so. She mentions “shouting” which surely relates to the people. Not a vehicle!
