To not let my sister bring her own meat on Christmas day!

1000 replies

FelizNavidadAmiga · 20/12/2024 21:33

First off, we are a strictly vegan household for moral reasons. I invited my sister for Christmas lunch as she is recently divorced and has nowhere else to go. I usually put on a magnificent spread with roast vegetables, tagine, stuffed peppers, vine leaves, falafel, home made hummus etc. My sister has just sent me a message saying she's going to bring her own chicken to cook. AIBU to say no way! I don't want chicken cooking in my nice clean vegan oven! Plus the smell makes me feel ill 🤢 I don't want to upset her as she's very sensitive at the moment but surely she can do without chicken for 1 day.

Now you're demonstrating you know nothing about the sheep shearing industry.
Does your ignorance have no end?

I grew up on sheep farm. I've seen sheep being shorn.

Meat eaters eat vegan things all the time (bread, veg, potatoes, 'accidentally vegan' confectionary, dips, tomato pasta sauces I won't go on). Vegans never eat meat products.

Exactly - chips are vegan.

Chips are just food that anyone not allergic to potato, or anything they're prepared in, can eat.

I only mentioned sheep because someone else did.
Stop now.

I'm arguing against the general consensus than vegan=better morals.
I'm not only reading your comments.

Well take your ‘nice try’ to some other commenters lol

Yes, people are saying it's the moral (or ethical) choice.

If you have a strong objection to eating meat for welfare reasons then yes, it’s the moral choice. But still an individual choice. No-one has said it makes for overall better morals.

This.

It's one day, and you've been kind enough to invite your sister because she's recently divorced. The right and polite thing to do would be to accept the food that's on offer.

I've also just posted about Quorn - that's a good alternative she could bring on the day.

Kind enough? Sounds like a pity invite to me.

ueberlin2030 · 21/12/2024 09:50

@AuntieMillicent nauseating and disgusting food comes in all forms, including vegan options!

That is very true. I didn't mean that, that there's no such thing as a food that happens to be vegan friendly, that a meat eater may dislike.

I meant that from a moral/ethical stance, a meat eater is not going against their beliefs to eat vegan for a meal, unlike the other way around.

I have concerns about animal welfare standards-, not necessarily the killing of animals. I'm ok with eating wild game. I don't eat farmed salmon.

This is what I don’t understand, it feels very hypocritical. Why not care about the welfare of animals in slaughterhouses?

I don’t understand omnivores who ‘agree’ with veganism but keep eating animal products-it makes no sense to me

I post this on every vegan thread but there is increasing evidence to suggest that the ability to follow vegetarian and vegan diets is genetic, based on how we synthesize lipids or something.
Anyway it's always been clear as day yo me that meat is a need for some and not others.

Doesn't mean you can't survive one meal without it.

It depends on what the vegan food is tbh. I refuse to eat something which has clocked up more airlines than me in the last month! 👍

"I don’t understand omnivores who ‘agree’ with veganism but keep eating animal products-it makes no sense to me"

That's me. I know what's right in many areas of my life but I don't necessarily do it. I'm a weak willed hypocrite, but I still know what's the correct moral choice.

Agreed. Do what I can, the alternative would be, doing damn all.

didistutter56 · 21/12/2024 09:57

I’m also vegan so this would be a no from me. There’s plenty of “meat alternative” vegan Christmas options if she simply can’t go without for one day.

Dee00 · 21/12/2024 09:57

I’m a bit torn on this one, as a vegetarian I have always catered for meat eaters. Just the same as when I am invited to others they would have something vegetarian for me.

I usually just buy the disposable foil trays for the joint and cook their roasted vegetables around the meat juices. Then use the tray juices to make their gravy. I’m sure you could get a small turkey crown and some pigs and blankets if that’s possible.

This just wouldn’t be a dilemma for me.

PerditaLaChien · 21/12/2024 09:57

Your offering sounds quite low in protein and not really in keeping with the point of secular (eg. Yule origin) Christmas, which is basically a seasonal, local midwinter "feast".

I understand you not wanting meat cooked in your oven but perhaps suggest she brings some cooked in advance instead?

I think its a pity to spoil someone else's special festive meal by restricting their food choices. I'd be absolutely gutted if someone expected me to have a vegan Christmas lunch without the traditional foods.

Do you realise that people may well know what a tagine is but also not enjoy it?

What do you mean 'not enjoy it'

A tagine is a cooking pot in which you do any number of dishes, you can cook anything in it, its the style of cooking and the way the heat works in it that means its a 'tagine'.

They're conveinent little pots, apart from storing the thing.

Yes and that's a valid point. The wild venison in my freezer travelled no more than 100 miles maximum by road.

There are plenty of vegan options though that would be similar to the traditional feast - I’m vegan and celebrate Yule and I manage it every year! She doesn’t need to bring a chicken.

Browningstown · 21/12/2024 09:59

Absolutely not unreasonable OP and I am a meat eater.

She enjoys a meal provided by you or she eats alone.

I wouldn't feel bad about telling her crack on if her chicken is more important to her.🙄

Tell her to have a protein breakfast at home on the day if she is that desperate 🙄.

It's not the moral choice, it's a choice in one aspect of your life. A meat eater or vegetarian* *may make more ethical or moral choices in every other aspect of their lives.
I know a vegetarian who went and swam with dolphins - to me that seemed very hypocritical, and not at all a moral choice, not happy to eat animals but happy to exploit them.

I think that’s what this poster does care about. Wild game lives free range and is shot in the wild rather than killed in a slaughterhouse.

anyolddinosaur · 21/12/2024 10:03

I'm an omnivore because vegan food leaves me feeling hungry. So I'd eat a meat roll in the car before eating your Christmas dinner.

She is being unreasonable to want to bring a chicken to cook when your kitchen will be far too busy, less unreasonable to want to eat meat.

If I'm invited for a meal I do my best toe at whatever is offered, whether I like it or not, as anything else is just rude. Unfortunately some food would make me ill and I cant eat it but if I knew you'd offer that sort of food I'd politely refuse the invitation.
