I’m In the U.K. if that makes any difference

Nice try 🙄

Lentilweaver · 20/12/2024 19:37

Not this again.

JassyRadlett · 20/12/2024 19:37

Who exactly is telling you otherwise?

samarrange · 20/12/2024 19:38

Will this thread go down the "Ugh, ghastly Americanisms" route, or the "Did you hear about the person who said 'Merry Christmas' and got sent to prison because a Muslim reported them to the thought police" route?

Place your bets...

SweetBobby · 20/12/2024 19:39

I'm telling Kamala.

Upstartled · 20/12/2024 19:39

Merry Christmas, surely, heathen?

Can I ask how often you say Happy Holidays and how often have you heard people say Happy Holidays?

DappledThings · 20/12/2024 19:40

You can say Happy Christmas, you can wear a poppy, nobody cancelled Christmas and renamed it Winterval. It's all fine and you know it is and are just stirring.

johnyhadasister · 20/12/2024 19:41

It is Merry Christmas dear. My gay hairdresser loves telling us: merry Christmas.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 20/12/2024 19:42

Happy Armadillos.

BallerinaRadio · 20/12/2024 19:42

You can wish them whatever you like pretty sure you don't need permission

Berga · 20/12/2024 19:42

What's that? Oh, just my eyes rolling out of my head.

No one ever told you that you can't say happy Christmas. No one is telling you it has to be happy holidays, you don't have to celebrate Winterval. If you want to be racist or exclusionary, at least own it.

Cafecontribution · 20/12/2024 19:42

Nope I’m genuinely interested. Not stirring. I normally say merry Christmas. I’m not religious myself.

Noticed at work this year everyone is saying happy holidays.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 20/12/2024 19:43

Because there’s about twenty holidays this time of year and it’s easier to say ‘happy holidays’ than remember the dates of each one.

ShortColdandGrey · 20/12/2024 19:44

Who is telling you that you can't say Happy Christmas? I am fed up with people getting upset about something that was made up. Nobody cares if you say Happy Christmas, Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays.

Hoppinggreen · 20/12/2024 19:44

I had to email 6 people for work today to sign off for the hols and they were all around the world. I didn't use the word "Christmas" once but that was my choice, nobody would have imploded if I had I just feel its wrong to wish people a Merry christmas if its not something they celebrate. Its actually not something I celebrate either from a religious point of view, I like the time off work, food and presents etc

johnyhadasister · 20/12/2024 19:44

It is Merry Christmas. Look the online advert from Albert hall and what what the cornice of Albert hall says

Cafecontribution · 20/12/2024 19:45

Ok won’t be returning to this thread as I only asked a genuine question. Will be logging off now .

Everyone? Every single person in your workplace has said this to you?

I don't believe you at all. Unless you work with one other person.

Xag · 20/12/2024 19:47

It would sound wrong in UK (we'd more typically say Seasons Greetings if we were going for a non-specific glad tidings)

But it's really normal in US

Ah, you work at the American embassy!

Otherwise - nah.

Branleuse · 20/12/2024 19:48

Solstice blessings to you

Ladamesansmerci · 20/12/2024 19:50

I don't think the vast majority care either way. Anyone offended at either of these is ridiculous. In the same way, I'm an atheist, but idc if someone tells me they'll keep me in their prayers.

These are just well meaning or cultural things that people say. It isn't that deep.
