To remove the toilet from the en suite?

I’m interested in how people would react if buying a house with an en-suite shower room instead of a more traditional complete en-suite with shower, toilet and basin.

Current set up:
Four bedroom house.

Main family bathroom has toilet, basin, bath with shower over.

Master bedroom has en-suite with toilet, basin and small shower cubicle.

There is a downstairs loo off the hall.

What I want to do:
Remove toilet from the en-suite and replace the shower cubicle with a nice big walk- in shower (not a wet room, a bigger contained modern shower enclosure).

I know MN has Opinions on en-suites and hates the idea of ‘poo-ing off your bedroom’ - but my question is:

YABU - an en-suite should have a toilet

YANBU - a shower room off the master bedroom is much better

I’m a firm believer in having your house how you want it but am thinking of how buyers would react when I do come to sell.

I have never lived in a house with an ensuite bathroom it hasn't bothered me because the bathroom is very close to my bedroom.
But if I had an ensuite I would definitely want a toilet in it.

What do you do most?

You shower once a day, maybe twice?

As opposed to :

  • clean your teeth twice a day at least.
  • put make-up on once, maybe twice if goi g out in the evening
  • take it off
  • do serums, acids, creams, moisturisers - twice
  • brush hair in front of mirror - lots
  • use the loo - lots and lots

so my conclusion is that a good loo, a large counter with a sink in it , a lighted mirror cabinet over it and lots of drawers underneath would be a set-up you’d use a good deal more in a day than a shower enclosure

So keep the loo and take out the tiny shower

Never use the shower as it’s pokey and not joyful. Bath every day. Hair wash using main bathroom shower.

Teeth clean in main bathroom.

Use en suite once when I get up and sometimes once in the night. Only me uses it, DH walks out to main bathroom if he needs it in the night.

Yes I do my face and skincare in the en-suite.

ALL I WANT IS MY LOVELY SHOWER 🤣🤣

We have a cat that does that. Very neatly, straight down the drain hole, not a drop on the floor. Which is probably more than can be said for your boys Grin

Much more. They had the nerve to tell me that they couldn't help where it splattered. A week of mums boot camp for boys disabused them of that notion! 😂

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 21/12/2024 18:09

I would not buy with no loo in ensuite

Do what you want (and keep up the kegels - seriously, they work). Unless you're planning to sell within 10 years, then keep the loo.

My only observation is people with 3 or more older children all clamouring for the loo in the morning, they would not go for it. If that's in your future, be prepared to change it back.

EmotionalSupportBiscuit · 22/12/2024 09:19

@Tessiebear2023 I’m 53 so definitely no children in my future (or past, as it happens) but agree with you on the kegels 🤣🤣

One family bathroom with shower over bath

One (new) shower room

Two toilets (one upstairs and one downstairs)

Currently three toilets including the one in the en-suite.

It’s the loss of the toilet that causes the negative for you?

Not the PP but definitely - we viewed a house with similar specs and the lack of toilet in the en suite (big room, shower only) was one of the reasons we didn't go for it. Too much work - we definitely wanted an en suite with toilet and shower which is what we have now!

Do you really need a huge walk in shower OP? We have just put in a 900x900 quadrant shower enclosure, with a powerful electric shower and it is perfectly if enough to be comfortable to use and move around in.

For a wee, downstairs, like I do now. If I’m going upstairs, it doesn’t matter which room I walk to.

That's true if you've got a house-full, but if not one toilet upstairs and one down is plenty.

I used to manage with only one upstairs and 4 of us in the house, but it was nice moving to a larger house with 3 loos once the kids got older. Dp and I can easily manage to go through the night without using our en suite at all, it wouldn't be the nighttime wees that were an issue, it's the teenagers taking ages in the showers that are the problem!

Well I'm 20, and my experience of toilets is having ONE at home (which my bro tried to dominate until my sis & I got our way) and one between four of us at college. Yes, there is another one almost next door, but it's still not enough. A girl needs one to herself!
