Nits

My dd (9) has worn her hair down for a few times lately and then she tells me there’s nits going around her class. I done her hair tonight and didn’t find anything. However when I was emptying the bath I saw this on the side. Does it look like a nit? Aibu to rewash her hair and go through it again?

Focus not good enough to tell. It could possibly be an adult head louse.

WonderingWanda · 19/12/2024 20:06

No it looks more like a very wet money spider to me.

I tired to put the zoomed in picture but it’s saying it’s too big

Can’t see any legs. But then a head louse will have nearly as many legs.

I wouldn’t do any more tonight. Just lots of conditioner and a nit comb for the next few nights.

Does it have legs? How many? Have you done a google search on “head louse” and looked for images?

WhateverThen · 19/12/2024 20:13

Possibly, though doesn’t immediately look like one to me.

I’ve always found it easier to go through my kids’ hair dry to check for them. Use a torch to properly look, especially behind ears and at the nape of the neck. Google to check what the eggs look like first.

Littleoldme789 · 19/12/2024 20:15

It doesn’t look like what I’m seeing on google they look like but maybe I’m just super aware 🫣

It does to me, right size and colour for adult louse. Get that nitty gritty comb going 😬

BarbaraHoward · 19/12/2024 20:28

If they're going around and she's been wearing her hair down then I'd be going through her hair with lots of conditioner and a nitty gritty. If she has them big enough for that to have come from her, there'll be no denying them with a proper check. Good luck!

You can buy lice combs that have a magnifying glass in the plastic. Very easy to tell then, lice have legs and they look transparent under a magnifying glass, it's the blood in them that makes them brown.

I didn’t see no legs and I could squish it if you know what I mean

Nits make a sound when popped

You can't squish a louse they are hard on top.

WinterFaye2 · 19/12/2024 21:21

Nits don’t come out of the hair when washed (or dry) unless pulled out. They are fast and clingy little things.

I’d invest in a metal nit comb and the next time you condition her hair whizz it through small sections just to be sure.

probably an unpopular opinion here but I wish nit nurses were still a thing, I’d absolutely do that job!
