AIBU to feel sorry for the 100 dogs a month destroyed since the XL Bully ban

Locutus2000 · 19/12/2024 12:04

I hate the whole XL Bully thing, they are a travesty against nature and the primary market appears to be antisocial idiots (not all owners obviously).

But I also love animals, especially dogs, and to hear the police are destroying an average of one hundred banned breeds a month is upsetting. They are still (arguably) sentient beings who experience pain and fear, many will have been mistreated. They didn't ask for some dickhead to fuck with their genes and make them potential monsters.

I'm quite happy for the breeds to be eliminated. I still feel sorry for the innocent dogs losing their lives whilst the breeders and owners usually seem to walk away without consequence.

AIBU to feel this way?

Cost of kennelling seized dogs soars and in many areas attacks continue to rise, forces tell the BBC.

No. It's costing £25m a year to kennel these monstrous creatures. They should all be shot so we don't have to pay for them.

BitchinTwinset · 19/12/2024 12:05

I think most people would agree with you? The fact it's not a pleasant thing to do is why it's gone on for so long before the restrictions came in.

Edit - to be clear I 100% agree it needs to happen and far too many lives were lost because of these dogs and their breeders and owners. I still feel sorry for the poor animals but there is no question that they need to be got rid of. They are not safe to keep.

KitsyWitsy · 19/12/2024 12:06

I’m neither happy nor sad. It just needs to be done, doesn’t it?

Errors · 19/12/2024 12:07

It’s a difficult one to reconcile. I completely agree with the ban and I agree with dangerous dogs being PTS, but it doesn’t mean I can’t feel sad for those creatures at the same time who were interbred by humans just looking to make a killing machine. However, I have far more sympathy for the victims of those dog attacks

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 19/12/2024 12:07

I agree, I feel for the dogs, they are just doing what they are bred to do.

Even though I feel sorry for the individual animals it's right that the breed, as a whole, is eliminated though.

SiobhanSharpe · 19/12/2024 12:09

This is indeed unpleasant to have to face, however, I would sooner these unpredictable animals (and yes, I know it's not their fault, bad owners etc etc) were humanely destroyed than risk more dreadful injuries and deaths of human beings.

user23124 · 19/12/2024 12:09

Its appalling that the moronic people who buy these animal are not forced to pay for their care and for them to be put down.

user23124 · 19/12/2024 12:10

I will add that rats are highly intelligent sentient creatures and we kill literally billions a year - does this also cause heartache?

VegTrug · 19/12/2024 12:10

I’m bloody glad! The reason they’re on the DDL is because it’s been proven that aggressive & violent tendencies exist within their DNA! You can trot out the “that’s bullshit” and that old favourite “it’s the owners not the dogs” but it’s a proven FACT that a tendency towards violent behaviour exists quite literally in their DNA and the countless deaths are proof of this.
the more that get destroyed the better!

Mrsbloggz · 19/12/2024 12:11

Do you also feel sorry for the millions upon millions of chickens, sheep, cows, pigs etc who live horrible lives and then are slaughtered in order to facilitate our gustatory pleasure?

qwertasdfg · 19/12/2024 12:11

Far more cows and pigs, also sentient animals are killed every month. Often after a life of misery.

SiobhanSharpe · 19/12/2024 12:11

Its appalling that the moronic people who buy these animal are not forced to pay for their care and for them to be put down.

But we then run the risk that some of these owners may just abandon their dogs absulotely anywhere rather than pay up.

Cheers for that well thought out response showing a solid understanding of the nuances of the OP 🙄

I agree that it’s possible to support the ban while simultaneously feeling sorry for the animals involved.

TickingAlongNicely · 19/12/2024 12:14

I honestly think euthanasia is a kindness to these animals. They've been let down by humans and muzzles, caging etc is prolonging the suffering

WhyDoesDenisNotRhymeWithPenis · 19/12/2024 12:14

Nope, all they'd feel is an injection.
I feel sorry for the vets burdened with the poor choices of shitty people, and for farmed animals.

Mrsbloggz · 19/12/2024 12:14

You say that you feel sorry for innocent dogs, but this is a nonsense. Dogs (in common with other animals) are not capable of making moral choices they can neither be innocent nor guilty.
The dogs are humanely destroyed, one minute they're alive next minute there is no dog to experience anything, they don't suffer, what's the problem 🤷🏻‍♀️
You are projecting onto the dog human emotions which it does not feel. In other words you are just indulging yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️

Upstartled · 19/12/2024 12:16

Yeah, op, some people will be sad about this while still knowing that it's the best way forward. It's just one of those things.

Exactly this.

Squirrelblanket · 19/12/2024 12:17

No, I feel sorry for the people who have been killed or injured by these dogs.

OneAmberFinch · 19/12/2024 12:21

I feel sorry for the thousands of "reactive" dogs who are kennelled for years on end because they're not safe to be around people but soft-hearted people can't make hard decisions.

Blackbutler86 · 19/12/2024 12:22

Of course it’s sad, it’s shit all round for not only the dogs but the people who have to deal with it. I work in dog rescue and it’s a horrendous. Quite simply there are too many dogs and too many idiots who do not seem to see them as living beings and get them on a whim/give up when they realise they take alot of care/cost money/get old etc. Adoptions are down at the moment and we are over run with dogs. I currently have 4 fosters on top on my own 9 dogs. It’s hard work and I would love a break but when I look at the dogs I have here I remind myself they were saved from death. Sorry to derail a bit, none of my current fosters are bull breeds although I do foster them (not banned ones obviously). What I’m trying to say really is that it’s not just xls getting put to sleep it’s all breeds.

@Locutus2000

yes, it hurts my heart.. even more so because they could be (are) killing dogs that don't even have the rogue gene,

the only thing that helps me a little is knowing the dogs have no concept of being PTS and aren't scared of it. A lot of them 'on death row' will be being looked after better than they have ever been. I hurt for the ones ripped from loving owners who had a lovely life. I know the owners could have tried for an exemption, but some didn't think their dog met the criteria for needing to. They don't all look horribly scary.

The numpty owners should be euthanised as well!!!

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/12/2024 12:25

Dogs which are seized and destroyed are dogs which have attacked. Dogs with reactive, attack-prone temperaments aren’t happy dogs, it’s better for them to be euthanised for their own sakes as much as anything else - and I think the same for dogs of any breed which have poor temperaments.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 19/12/2024 12:26

It's undeniably sad. I can sit with both truths at once: It's sad and it's an absolute necessity.
My teenage daughter was chased by one this morning and managed to cling onto the school gate until it opened for her (she's at a special school so the gates aren't open in the morning like in mainstream. You buzz in. You buzz out). Terrifying.

The risk of dying from a dog attack by any breed is real. But you're absolute toast if an XL Bully gets to you. ALL dangerous breeds in the UK need to be euthanised. They serve no purpose and most owners cannot control them.
