A large hotel local-ish to us (around 10 miles away) is currently closed for bookings as it is being occupied by just under 400 asylum seekers.

Recently, in our village and a couple of neighbouring ones, there has been a spate of parcels being stolen from doorsteps. I’m sure you can all work out who has taken the blame for this….! Even though one of the perpetrators is known to be a local lad, born and bred in our village, some people are still blaming others..

The comments on Facebook community groups are disgusting.

Since when has it been acceptable to so readily stick the blame upon those literally fleeing their countries?

I honestly feel that as a human race, we are devolving.

It must be lovely to be so naive. For you, not foe the women and girls you are throwing to the lions.

As someone who actually escaped from a country where women were treated as not even human, for my daughter sake... it is horrifying.

You aren't being nice, you are being stupid.

It is not misandrist to point out that men, as a class not individuals, can be regularly dangerous and violent to women and children.

It is not racist to point out that men from countries like mine, where women are gang raped on the street while others watch on, punished for being raped, or beaten to death, ripped apart and burned... all while the men can look themselves in the eyes after and say they are good religious men, that these men coming here in such large numbers will change everything you take for granted.

Fools.

You actually think it’s racist to object to hundreds of young men plonked in hotels often in areas right near to a school? many of whom haven’t even come from a war torn country. Meanwhile our own homeless ignored and refused the privilege of a warm bed for the night.

This is interesting. I suspect you'd be unhappy with a homeless hostel housing 400 near you.

I work in a hospital. The vents at the sides are warm. Homeless people pitched their tents there. The patients complained and asked for them to be moved. The council had to be brought in to physically move them. In some cases throwing their tents into the rubbish truck. This is how we treat our own homeless people. Same old hate.

Proof??? Actual proof not Daily Mail?

Proof of what? Was the viral clip from the church hall meeting in Altrincham not admissible as evidence for you, the one where they admitted the migrants had access to private healthcare. But the locals who are waiting lists didn't. You can see why this goes down badly surely.

AlwaysGinPlease · 19/12/2024 07:02

You have to ask yourself this. Why are they all men. Mostly young, fighting fit young men. Where are the women and children?!

Thank you for that incredibly powerful post - for posting the truth so eloquently and succinctly. Encapsulating how many of us feel.

YA possibly BU to be surprised by it. Racism isn't a new thing.

Of course it's not acceptable to scapegoat asylum seekers for every ill. However, people are not happy having a large influx of (mostly men) from a foreign culture suddenly plonked in their community. I don't think they're unreasonable - they're entitled to their opinion

Yeah, FIL was grumbling about it yesterday - with their 4x4s, buying their food from Waitrose instead of the local independent traders, causing pressure on underfunded services, the way they don't care about gates or driving carefully through the moor as though it's safe compared to the school run through Wandsworth of a morning and the way so many decide to cycle four abreast whilst wearing inappropriate clothing.

But that's rural Devon once the private schools close for Christmas, I guess.

hattie43 · 19/12/2024 07:08

Nobody wants 400 random men on their doorstep no matter where they're from . People are angry .

Petrasings · 19/12/2024 07:08

Tinselskirt · 19/12/2024 06:25

So should we just refuse to take any asylum seekers because we are an island? How does that work then?

We have taken over a million in one single year! The issue is where to house everyone - how to pay for all of this. Look at the maths yourself, we do not have infinite space or resources….

SunnyHappyPeople · 19/12/2024 07:09

Tell me you're Reform without telling me you're Reform.

What are you doing to help the homeless, given your passionate statement?

Slobberchops1 · 19/12/2024 03:12

Don’t be so naive . These aren’t lovely men down on their luck .

just keep yourself safe when out

So what are they then, since you know them so well?

ElangaScores · 19/12/2024 07:11

bozzabollix · 19/12/2024 06:24

I’m also disgusted OP. These are the hideous racist types who’d have been complaining about Jewish refugees from Germany in the Second World War. I live in Kent and there are people here on social media who will get this subject into literally anything. Bad roads? Blame immigration. Car accident somewhere blocking a major road? Has to be an immigrant. They are obsessed.

Meanwhile on the coast fishermen are dragging these people out of the water, sticking blankets round them and listening to their stories. They’re the least racist around. One told me about fishing out an eighteen month old with tears in his eyes, before then saying he’d leave Nigel Farage in there for demonising these people so much.

Nigel Farage, should you ever read this, don’t do too much on the English Channel, you won’t be guaranteed much help.

Racists, why not actually meet some refugees? It’s not good for you physiologically to be full of so much hate, meeting them would make you realise they are just people often with awful stories. It’d do you good.

Why are these people with such sad stories refusing to stay in safe, welcoming France?

SometimesCalmPerson · 19/12/2024 07:12

It is not misandrist to point out that men, as a class not individuals, can be regularly dangerous and violent to women and children.

The fact that men can be violent is not a reason to leave people homeless and starving. Some humans are not more important than others. We all deserve the basics, even men who are surrounded by other men.

YANBU to be annoyed by the racism.

YA possibly BU to be surprised by it. Racism isn't a new thing.

It is NOT racism to say we are concerned about safety,

It is NOT racism to say we have no idea where all of these people are going to be housed. How we can afford to feed and care for them given our infrastructure is collapsing as it is under the strain.

It is NOT racism to consider the impact of millions being absorbed, and no plan in place for resettling properly with values based education.

It is NOT racism to demand that our government takes action, that there is a level of control and accountability.

You are lazy resorting to banding about insults like this without even taking the time to listen to the very real concerns and issues people have. It’s performative and based on a total lie. We have no housing at all in our county - none - can they come and live with you?

I agree with you OP.
i live in Altrincham - are you near me? it’s been so depressing to witness the racism from some of the locals, comparing the housing of asylum seekers to the lack of support homeless people receive - that’s a fair point, but I can’t imagine any of the racists do much to help the homeless either…
No doubt they’d have objected to the kindertransport too 😢

Humphhhh · 19/12/2024 07:20

And people still try to claim that Mumsnet isn't racist.

DarkAndTwisties · 19/12/2024 07:20

DingDongVerilyOnHigh · 19/12/2024 01:20

Ok.

But!

400 young men from different culture being housed near you with no income?

Can you not see why it might be confusing to long lived local people?

Why should it be the local scrote rather than the unlocal scrote?

Confusing? Why would it be "confusing"?

We had a hotel very near us used to house refugees. There were never any issues, either from the refugees, or on local fb groups - I didn't see anyone complaining about it.

It's a horrible fear isn't it, that it is all coming back around again. That we never really escaped in the first place. Wondering where to go next.

In the past, whenever there has been posts like ours, it isn't long before MN delete the whole post. I'm sure this will be no different.

I just hope people remember.

But it IS racist to accuse people of crimes they didn’t commit based on racial profiling. Especially when the offender has been outed, as in the OP.

You are lazy resorting to banding about insults like this

“Racist” isn’t an insult. It’s insulting to be racist.

DarkAndTwisties · 19/12/2024 07:29

Why is everyone saying 400 men? Op didn't say all men.

The hotel near us that was used for refugees wasn't all men. Obviously I don't have a breakdown of the people, but there were definitely a fair few children. You could see them playing in the hotel car park.

GabriellaMontez · 19/12/2024 07:30

Same in my town, 400 men. Every single one is a man.

We have no idea about their backgrounds some won't say where they've come from.

No families, no work, nothing to lose.

What could possibly go wrong?
