AIBU to think that you don't change your baby's nappy in the middle of a coffee shop?

I was in a coffee shop today and there was a family with two babies sitting a couple tables up from us. I looked over and I saw the father changing the baby's nappy on the seat (the soft seat side of the table, not on a hard chair). I know it wasn't on the table or anything and I think it was only a wet nappy but AIBU to think that was a bit odd... I wasn't in the toilets so not certain if there was a baby changing mat in there.

I've heard that some children can start peeing mid nappy change. Imagine a boy, squirting it all around! Revolting.

I am in no way squeamish or ultra hygiene conscious but I do think that is very grim indeed.

I can only imagine the furore if a dog peed on the floor ( let alone on the seating, although it should never be allowed on that obviously.)

Men's loos need the same changing facilities that women's loos have.

That is true but it’s not every nappy change and most parents who have baby boys are prepared for this eventuality and pretty quick with the new nappy, or to catch it in the old one! It’s not the same as a dog peeing on the floor.

Nothing wrong with this. With a baby sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Ugh, there is everything wrong with this. Have a look at yourself!
It is not acceptable to change a nappy in an area where people are dining.

Funnywonder · 19/12/2024 22:27

I never did it with either of my DC, but it doesn't really bother me when other people do.

ReggaetonLente · 20/12/2024 07:45

Oh of course, but that does tend to be in a clinical setting - health visiting clinic etc. You wouldn’t just strip them in the supermarket queue.

I know the babies don’t care where they are changed but it doesn’t sit right with me

ThinWomansBrain · 20/12/2024 07:49

If I've treated myself to lunch or cake and coffee out, I don't want to do it sat next to someone using the main cafe space as a toilet.

sophiec100 · 20/12/2024 19:35

I think as long as they used a changing mat and it was just a wet nappy then it was fine. Ive done this before as I have two kids it can be difficult going baby change. I even seen someone do at mcodnalds a few weeks ago and no one said anything

Deadringer · 20/12/2024 19:40

It's disgusting. If they don't have changing facilities find somewhere that does.

I'd already waited over 10 minutes and the person in there was showing no signs of coming out any time soon. Baby was restless, starting to cry and trying to wriggle out of my arms, there were 2 more waiting to change their babies ahead of me. And there was less than 15 minutes left on my parking.

At the end of the day I'd have been unreasonable to try restraining him while he screams to the whole café and I didn't want a £120 fine for overstaying on my car parking. So I changed him quickly on the bench, cleaned up after ourselves and went on our way.

Had their been adequate provision of changing facilities wouldn't have happened.

You could have changed him in your car, clean nappy, no parking ticket.

TinselQueen · 20/12/2024 19:54

No excuse if there are toilets nearby

Nobody says anything because because the type of person who changes a nappy in a restaurant is rough as fuck and would probably punch anyone who dared ask for basic standards.

crystalball2025 · 20/12/2024 20:03

Also, sorry, but how do I tell my little one what's going on when the time comes. At the moment it's normal, but if he doesn't come back for a while? Maybe work?

vibratosprigato · 20/12/2024 20:27

@SereneFish judging by your language on this thread, you're the one that's rough as fuck...

No, it's definitely you and your ilk.

completly not true im sure there was a reason why they did it

MifsBr0wn · 16/01/2025 14:21

Grim 😬

OP I assume the bench was of a wipeable material and not fabric? Still pretty grim.

Those sort of seats are covered in material, and even if it was wipeable it’s wrong, as contaminated hands will be touching food surfaces.

For a very small infant or newborn and a wet nappy then no I wouldn't be bothered.

But what if you discovered a poonami on undoing the nappy?
plus very small infants can make a big mess!

The reason why they did it was they have the hygiene standards of sewer rats.

What used to annoy me was you'd clean them up and get a fresh nappy only to.be greeted by them deciding that was the time to pee or poo again and you had to start over and if they timed it right the nappy wouldn't be in place and the mess would be over you and the changing area.

Sometimes when I think of how gross they could be with puking, peeing and pooing I wonder why I loved them so much.

Fantailsflitting · 10/05/2025 13:19

I know of a cafe which bans babies and children. They have a very successful business. You can sit down and relax without crying babies and toddlers throwing food or gross people changing their child's nappy in the middle of the establishment. Yes, I understand they were initially criticized but they stood firm.
