I am on day 4 of the most horrific viral illness, it has wiped the floor with me. My symptoms are

  • severe headache that feels like someone has struck me over the head with an axe - doesn't get much better with paracetamol and ibuprofen
  • boiling hot and then shivering moments later. Cold sweats
  • throat like swallowing glass
  • no appetite at all, I've eaten about 1000 cals in 3 days
  • overwhelming fatigue, I've done nothing but sleep, haven't left the house since Saturday afternoon.

I'm so, so fed up now. Anyone else also suffering? What on earth is this virus? I have honestly never felt so sick. Lots of my team at work are currently down with the same and re saying it's the worst flu like illness they've experienced 😩

Sounds like either flu or COVID, both are everywhere this year.

Sorry you feel so ill. Hopefully if you keep hydrated and rest you will start to feel better soon Flowers

Well, it sounds like flu to me! Or how I was when I got Omicron covid. All you can do is rest, hot drinks, paracetamol/ibuprofen and wait it out. I’m sorry you’re suffering and hope it disappears quickly.

Patienceinshortsupply · 18/12/2024 17:04

You have my absolute sympathy - I'm 3 weeks in with it and still coughing in spite of a course of antibiotics. Did 3 Covid tests but GP said it's just a nasty cold virus doing the rounds and people are taking 3 to 4 weeks to fully recover from it. DH came down with it 2 weeks ago and is still suffering - he's got an inhaler for asthma and it's not relieved the cough at all.

dreamer24 · 18/12/2024 17:07

Sorry to hear others are the same, it's just so awful. I had a hectic diary this week at work too with it being just before Christmas but that's all gone to shit 😩 nothing I can I guess, loads of us in the same boat in my team. Just praying it's gone for Christmas week so I can at least enjoy that!

i don’t feel ill but I’m really fed up with life so you have my sympathies there.

I am just coming out of the other side of this (but thankfully without the sore throat). After a week I was feeling human and now 10 days from the start I feel relatively well so long as I don't do anything more than sit at my desk/potter about. I hope you start feeling better soon. Take it easy and keep drinking.

ijustneedaminute24 · 18/12/2024 17:22

I'm 2 weeks in and am just so so tired. It was an absolute arse of a virus and sounded very similar to yours. Weirdly it brought my period forward a week too so that was a lovely combination.

I hope it passes soon OP!

Devilsmommy · 18/12/2024 17:24

Yeah that's not a virus, you've got the flu. It's meant to be a really bad one this year. Hope you're feeling better soon 💐

BeansOnToast32 · 18/12/2024 17:33

This is the flu! I was sent to the hospital by the GP last week and the hospital diagnosed me with influenza A after a blood test. Hospital Covid test was clear.
Exactly the same symptoms as you but I started throwing up too a few days into it.

Had 5 days worth of antivirals and was put on IV fluids, I'm mostly better now a week and a half later but I still have this awful urge to cough and my back (behind my lungs) is in agony from coughing so much. Hope you feel better soon.

dreamer24 · 18/12/2024 18:04

@BeansOnToast32 on god that sounds horrific. How did you end up on IV fluids if you don't mind me asking? Glad you're feeling better now!

BeansOnToast32 · 18/12/2024 18:21

@dreamer24 the GP sent me to the Acute Medical Unit at the hospital because I had really low blood pressure and kept throwing up as well as all of the other awful symptoms.

In the AMU they check stats, take blood, give you a Covid test, chest X-ray, ECG and put you on IV Fluids while you wait for your test results/diagnosis.

I was also sent to the AMU last Christmas and was diagnosed with a terrible chest infection after suffering for 3 wks, I think the GP thought I might have had a chest infection this time too because I also lost my appetite and threw up loads then as well but it was the flu this time. 🙄 don't think I'll leave the house for the whole of December next year.

JacJac77 · 19/12/2024 22:38

I've been ill since Tuesday - exactly the same symptoms except for no sore throat but I've had chills, body aches, extreme fatique - also really bad diarrhea the first couple of days (sorry TMI!). Fever seems to be breaking a little now but the coughing is worse today. Got some test kits off Amazon, negative for Covid, positive for Influenza A. Forcing myself to stay awake a bit longer in the hope I will sleep better tonight...
