Called in sick Monday as I felt terrible, extremely tired and also very down and just needed rest. I ended up sleeping most of the day and felt better for it. However, my daughter has had tummy ache tired, and was sick (very very small amount) and was complaining she was cold. I'm worried that if she still feels unwell by morning, I can't have another day off this week, I work in a nursery and time off is frowned upon anyway and plus we are short staffed as it is. I can't get childcare either. I have only been there 3 months and dont know what to do

If your daughter is unwell, and you haven’t got anyone else to care for her, then you can’t go in to work! It’s really hard, but that’s life as a parent.

Are we to assume you're a single Mum, OP? If so, do you have a friend or family member who you could call on? I realise this might be asking a lot, particularly this close to Christmas, when everyone is trying to avoid getting a bug or whatever, but failing this, it looks like you'll just have to take another day off. Short staffed or not, they will have to manage, and in all honesty, no one should be going to work when they're sick, so while the nursery may not be happy about it, I certainly wouldn't be going in if feeling unwell, as there's a good chance you'll pass it on to the little one's anyway.

Hello. Yes. I’m worried I’ll lose my job if I have these two days off but my daughter is definitely sick.

If your daughter is unwell and you don't have anyone to look after her, you will have to take the day off. Unfortunately there's not much else you can do! Could you use annual leave?

I don’t have kids so I don’t know about this but don’t nurseries always expect parents to leave work and pick up their kids from nursery if they are sick? They also would expect a parent to stay home from work to look after a poorly child rather than take them into nursery wouldn’t they?

So if they have a policy that children can’t be in nursery sick, then that must be the case with their staff too and if they expect nursery parents to drop work to look after poorly kids then they must be understanding if that happens to their staff too, surely?

You will need to take a parental leave day which is usually unpaid or put in a holiday if there is literally nobody to have your dd

You took Monday off sick because you felt tired?
