Is there a number? My son is stranded in Reading and has an important appointment in the morning.

National Rail Enquires app / website

Look on the website for the relevant train company.
Reading is used by Cross Country and Great Western Railway I think.
Also used by South Western Trains and the Elizabeth Line.

Where is your son trying to get to, OP?

mindutopia · 17/12/2024 20:06

Twitter/X post to them. South Western Railway is particularly responsive. You have to find the customer help handle but you just write them a public message with your question and what train to take and usually someone responds within minutes. May take longer at this hour though.

National Rail says disruption will end by 9pm whether that's true or not is another matter. The train operator he has a ticket for will be able to say if there's an alternative option.

Realtimetrains.co.uk is great

Everything seems to be running fairly well through Reading at the moment though. 20 min delays etc on some lines.

Is he not at the station and therefore able to ask staff?

Exeter. He’s getting zero info and no idea if he should abandon the train and try to get a coach from somewhere.

He is at the station and staff apparantly know nothing. Trains out of London aren’t running.

This is all it says on Great Western Trains website.
National Rail website says the same thing and says delays until around 9pm.
Trains do seem to be leaving Paddington.

There looks to be a 20.28 to Exeter St Davids that has now left Paddington. Looks like it goes from platform 7 at Reading.

Muffinbutton · 17/12/2024 20:17

How about going to Basingstoke and then change there for trains to Exeter. Obviously check first what is running and when.
