On Sunday morning I came down with the worst virus, aching all over from head to toe, severe headache, razor blades in my throat when swallowing, sweating and shivering simultaneously, and just so fatigued I did nothing but sleep the whole day. DH looked after our toddler all day so I could recuperate. Today he's gone to work and I'm doing my best but I'm really struggling. I've brought breakfast upstairs for toddler and she is currently eating toast and yogurt on the bed, which isn't ideal but I need to lie down (I'm lying next to her). She's watching etc and seems content for now but not sure how long this will keep her entertained. I physically am unable to get up and about for long. Taken paracetamol and ibuprofen etc. I have an important work meeting on Thursday too which I need to be at, there's no option, something really important is riding on it and it needs tying up before the Christmas break.

Any remedies other than paracetamol etc for getting rid of this awful bug so that I can parent / go to work later this week?

There are no remedies. All you can do is help your body fight it. Which means rest, fluid and high nutrient foods. Some people say zinc and vit C supplements help. The paracetamol and other meds will help with discomfort but it won't shift it any faster. Can you do the meeting remotely? I'd have thought people wouldn't be best pleased if you turned up ill and infections this close to Christmas.

I would try and drink 4-5l of water today and try and get it flushed through. Feel better xx

EnterFunnyNameHere · 16/12/2024 09:07

Sadly, viruses don't have miracle cures, you just need to try and rest as best you can - and always helps to keep warm and well hydrated!

Please do not go to work on Thursday though, do you really want to be spreading what you have to other people (especially the week before xmas)?!?!

dreamer24 · 16/12/2024 09:09

Thanks both. Unfortunately not possible to do the meeting remotely, but it's only for a couple hours so as long as I can drag myself through that, the rest of my working week can be done remotely / from home. I actually don't work Mondays anyway, but my biggest challenge today is parenting a lively toddler while feeling like I'm dying 😩 I don't know what this illness is but it's wiping the floor with me.

You can't "flush through" a virus. Don't be silly. Drinking 5l of water is more likely to lead to electrolyte imbalance making OP feel even worse.

Whole house has this exact horrible virus apart from me (yet 🫠). One daughter started Friday and by yesterday she felt a whole lot better. She is now today feeling herself again. So hopefully your recovery will be as quick. I have been giving them vitamin C drinks, vitamin D spray, lots of fruit and water, keeping on top of pain meds, sore throat lozenges with hexylresorcinol in and helping them to eat small but often.
Hope you do start to feel better soon it’s a nasty illness!

Rumors1 · 16/12/2024 09:24

Lovely you plan on spreading your horrible illness to others 6 days before Christmas.

ClydeBank · 16/12/2024 09:29

Don’t go in this sick and pass it onto colleagues- that’s incredibly thoughtless

Cecilly · 16/12/2024 09:42

My grandma used to make us drink a hot lemon, honey and ginger tea. That was her nice one. The other one was a spoonful of honey with chopped fresh rosemary and crushed garlic. I used to run away when she tried to make me have that! But she lived to be 104 years old and was never sick with a cold.

Donkeyfromshrek · 16/12/2024 09:43

I feel your pain OP. I have a similar virus. I'm currently on day 3 and feeling a little better. Ignore those telling you it's wrong going into work. If it started yesterday it's likely by Thursday you won't be as infectious anyway.

Thank you. Yes I'm hoping by Thursday I'll be much better 🤞🏻

Don’t give it to others before Christmas, which will potentially ruin their holidays and have them passing it on to elderly relatives etc. join your meeting via zoom.

I find the best way to recover fast is to for recovery seriously. That means lots of bed rest and sleeping whenever possible, plus nutritious foods and drinking plenty of fluids. Take extra vitamin supplements and treat symptoms with paracetamol.

that’s all you can do though; otherwise it’s a case of just getting to the other side.

Well, that sounds disgusting but if it works, I'm willing to try! 😂

The best thing is sleep. Can anyone else take the toddler?

dancinfeet · 16/12/2024 09:58

I find that beechams original powders work best for me (not the flu plus capsules). Not a miracle cure but they usually take the edge off it enough for me to be able to function

ChickenNuggetFromSpencies · 16/12/2024 09:59

Proper chicken broth (no, not the cube) and garlic, garlic and garlic😁
You can make lively strong garlic soup. Add marjoram or similar herb as well nkt just for health, but helps with garlic smell

ChickenNuggetFromSpencies · 16/12/2024 10:01

Any meeting can be teams meeting. Manymeetings should.
Many could also just be an email

ClivetheDestroyer · 16/12/2024 10:02

Day nurse will make you functional but feel like a bit of a zombie.
Dno what it has in it, but nothing else has the same effect!

Mmhmmn · 16/12/2024 10:04

Fluids, paracetamol and more rest while your body fights it. That’s really it. Sounds like flu. I hope it gets better soon. (It will).

This one can't unfortunately. All my others can. I can't go into the ins and outs of why, but this particular one needs to be face to face.

Thank you for all the suggestions, will give some of them a try.

@bridgetreilly sadly no one to take toddler today, all my back up childcare options work on Monday.

Dangerous advice. Drinking 5ltr of water could put a person in hospital.

Jostuki · 16/12/2024 10:09

Huge dose of vitamin c and sweat as much as possible. Be careful when you are overheating that you might feel faint.

Beanie hat, thick socks and sweat, sweat, sweat. You'll feel weak and you must stay hydrated, but it will help tremendously.

PomandersandRedRibbon · 16/12/2024 10:18

Sending sympathy op trying to watch a toddler when that ill.. Why did your dh go to work your not well??

I've had something like this since Friday for two days I could barely speak and leave bed. I don't think your dh should have left.

Missing the point here but what's not ideal about toddler eating toast and yoghurt in bed?
