I know there is a holiday forum which I have looked at but I need greater traffic rather quickly- wishing to book a European break as a gift - ideally going to 2 countries in about 8 days...... am thinking Sarajevo then Tivat? Am thinking of 2 places with a (relatively) straightforward train journey between the two. Loves history, good food, exploring etc.

Have already been to Krakow, Warsaw, Zabreb, Madrid, Brussels, Tirana, Valletta, Riga, Lithuania and Vilnius in terms of capital cities.

Love to hear your experiences...........

Italy? The trains between major cities are pretty good, you could easily fly into eg Naples and out of Rome. We’ve done this and I think it was a couple of hours by train through gorgeous countryside. Likewise Florence to Bologna.

You can’t get much better than Italy for history and good food!

Tallin then a ferry to Helsinki . Copenhagen then across to Sweden.

That sounds like an amazing present!

Innsbruck to Salzburg and/or Vienna.

Berlin to Prague/Munich/Amsterdam? Alternatively, Lisbon and Porto? Or some combination of Budapest/Vienna/Bratislava.

It's hard to say really without knowing budget, time of year, and what sort of weather you'd like.

Perhaps depends when you plan to travel?

Bernina Express from Switzerland to Italy
Hopping some of the Greek islands
Plitvice in Croatia with any other place in Croatia

Thank you all for your suggestions - it will be for next summer.

We did Sarajevo at Easter, then got the train (£6) to Mostar (this is one of the most scenic railway journeys in Europe), then the coach to Split (Croatia). It was a fabulous trip.

Sarajevo 2 nights (full of history)
Mostar 2 nights (stunningly beautiful- google it!)
Split 4 nights (beach)

Bergen to Stockholm, including a section kn the Flam scenic railway.
Milan to Venice
