To have no idea what ‘main’ gift to get 8/9 yo daughter

Hi all,

im aware that this is probably not the best place to post this but I need advice.

i have zero idea what to get my 8 year old who is nearly 9 for a main gift for Christmas. She has a switch, iPad, bike, scooter and dolls house. She barely plays with any toys and mainly plays with her electronics which is a bit frustrating. She does love arts and crafts and anything girly. Do I not bother with a big gift but then I feel like she will feel left out when my other two have had theirs?

Maybe encourage her art? Some nice paints/brushes/easle etc?

Goinggold · 14/12/2024 18:17

Instant camera? The thermal ones are fun and you can colour in the pictures and make collages etc.

Perfect28 · 14/12/2024 18:17

Sewing machine

PoissonOfTheChrist · 14/12/2024 18:20

Sewing machine

Could you recommend one please? I'd love to get one for DC but not sure what to get.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 14/12/2024 18:23

Any other interests? Drama, dance, acro, animas… zoos sometimes do amazing experience gifts and interests often spark ideas. My 8 yr old DD has asked for an air track to practice her tumbling.
Day out voucher? Alton towers, Harry Potter world, show in London plus overnight stay?

SaagAloopa · 14/12/2024 18:25

BATH BOMBS

COOKING SUBSCRIPTION

WATERCOLOUR PAINTS

(Sorry for caps is copy and paste from the 8 year old on my life's list)

MixieMatchie · 14/12/2024 18:27

Well, what has she asked for? Maybe she's not bothered about a "main gift". It seems mad to get her e.g. a sewing machine out of the blue if she's never expressed an interest. Imagine if someone gave a random big gift to you, for a hobby you don't have.

Trainstrike · 14/12/2024 18:31

3D pen, sewing machine, keyboard, guitar and telescope are all things we've considered for ours at that age.

AutoP1lot · 14/12/2024 19:19

My daughter got a 3D pen for her 8th birthday. Over a year on it's still one of her favourite things and she keeps creating better and better items with it.

Bucdynovehbkfdg · 14/12/2024 19:37

I’ve got my daughter a kids kindle! So if she loves reading, maybe that?

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/12/2024 19:38

Nice easel/art kit combination.

lola006 · 14/12/2024 19:41

Experience gifts. Disney On Ice, some sort of zookeeper day, a West End show (or touring production if not near London), cinema and dinner date with mum or dad.

Write a letter from Santa. My DC ate it all up when they were little but just didn’t need/want toys and such.

PinotDragon · 14/12/2024 19:42

Ask her what she wants and stop guessing? She might want 50 quid worth of Nike socks for all you know if you haven't asked her. It's a tough age between what they want and what they think they should want, ie a new dolls house or a a grown up handbag.

MoonieDoo · 14/12/2024 20:00

We've got ours a bath bomb making kit, bracelet making kit and a thermal printer as well as the usual clothes, chocolate and stocking bits. Her Birthday wasn't long ago so no big items really.

Wildywondrous · 14/12/2024 20:01

My 9 year old dd loves her Alexa so she can play music in her bedroom, ask it random questions and set alarms.

How about a big box full of craft things so she can make anything she wants?

I bought mine a potion making kit last year that she really enjoyed.

This year mine has asked for a phone, guitar, anything Taylor Swift related, skincare, Lottie Brookes books and a squishmallow.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 14/12/2024 21:59

You've mentioned scooter but I just ordered some skates for my 5.5 year old.

So shes a little younger than yours but I thought it'd be so fun for her in the summer

Plus, I see lots of cool kids skating in the park so it could be a good life skill

Imisschocolate17 · 14/12/2024 22:27

Any sports? Air track, football goal, sports kit

Normallynumb · 14/12/2024 23:04

Heelys?( or something like that).. shoes with wheels on!
Bubble or lava lamp

TeenLifeMum · 14/12/2024 23:06

caffelattetogo · 14/12/2024 18:21

Could you recommend one please? I'd love to get one for DC but not sure what to get.

John Lewis own brand ones are fab - simple and come in different colours. Mine is purple. I got it when I was about 30 but all the reviews were saying “perfect for a teen’s first sewing machine” and I decided it was about my level! Really recommend.

Apillthatmakesyousayalltherightstuff · 14/12/2024 23:11

Magnet chess, other magnet games.

lateatwork · 14/12/2024 23:38

Skateboard, any sort of ball (football, netball), table tennis stuff, tennis racket, roller blades

Zombieof3 · 17/12/2024 19:53

Thank you all! Some fab ideas on here and ones I should have really thought of myself but didn’t for some reason 😅
