sitting in costa coffee

IveGotToGoToMeDads · 14/12/2024 15:26

Went to costa coffee ordered drinks, sandwiches & cake. Myself & partner said we will eat in rather than take away. Place was full most seats were taken apart from a four seater table where some woman was sat. I asked if the seats on her table were taken and she said we can not sit on her table as she is with her DS.
In the end a chinese couple offered their seats and we eventually got a seat.
AIBU expecting a seat on womans table for me and my partner as no one was sat in them?

But there Is a seat, at the table YOU are sitting at, and I am sitting in it. I will NOT stand up when there is a free seat.

And you would cause me distress. I hope you are proud of that.

Disgraceful.

Not if it's the last seat in the cafe they're not. Tell me no, and I'll still sit there. It's not YOUR table, you don't own it.

What are you going to do about it if someone sits there anyway?

I’d ask the cafe to throw you out. And if you so much as opened your mouth I’d call the police on you.

If you under-occupy a table in a busy cafe, you have to be prepared to let strangers have the spare seats IMO. So I would just have sat down and if the woman didn't like it, well, she knows where the exit is.

This! Unless the woman was expecting company, those spare seats are for the taking. Whether she 'likes' strangers sitting a table she's chosen to under-occupy is neither here nor there.

You would call the police on a person with mobility issues who needed the empty seat at the table you were sitting at?

Really...? Classy!

You are the only one who would be thrown out dear.

For your disgraceful behaviour.

And I would have a panic attack if I had no seat, and would struggle because of my mobility issues, but yes feel free to make me stand up in the middle of the cafe juggling my cake and latte, while you hog a table to yourself and pop your bag on the chair I could have sat on.

.

If you would have a panic attack at no seat why go to a cafe by yourself in the first place? It's not an essential activity. You can go with someone else and sit down while they queue or not go. You don't have the right to spoil their experience so you can enjoy yours.

This would be a case of conflicting needs, surely. It sucks, but it does happen out in the wild.
I carry a card saying I need space and that I need to be left alone (from Stickman Communications - great for people who struggle to verbalise their needs), and I do put it on the table when I am in cafes. If you saw that and sat anyway, then I would think you were awful.

Londoneye20 · 14/12/2024 23:10

Tbh I wouldn't want to sit in there , it's always so dirty looking and the food gives me heartburn. I prefer pret , much nicer

Why are you not directing this at the person saying they would have a panic attack if someone sat next to them and asking THEM why they don't stay away from the cafe?

Why should I - a person with mobility issues have to stay home because someone refuses to let me sit by them? When this is the ONLY seat.

Your comment is disgusting..

I'm sorry but this thread is making me 😂 People willing to call the police if someone so much as sits at their table in Costa Coffee. People trying to outdo one another with their reasons as to why they deserve the extra seats etc. It's absurd.

I know right, I did LOL when someone said they would call the police on me for wanting to sit on a seat at the table they're sitting at... A person with mobility issues who needs to sit down.😆

Just try it hun! Go on! 😆 Call the police on me and see how that goes for you.

Ain't happening babe. If I want a seat I will take it. I am not standing up, even if some people don't give a shit about people with mobility issues.

There are some foul comments on this thread.

Have you read LikeWho’s posts? She’s so aggressive and threatening about this scenario that she needs the police called her on this scenario.

Of course here it’s funny and I’m laughing too tbh but in real life her aggression would not be funny.

Actually the foul comments came from you about how you would force yourself on people and ‘what are you going to do about it?’ threats. I’m LOLing at them here because you’re thankfully a stranger but in real life you would be scary.

You then started drip feeding about mobility issues when people challenged you.

VivienneDelacroix · 14/12/2024 23:26

Thank you so much to everyone on this thread. It's been a brilliant read.

I don't want people sitting with me particularly, but I also accept that if I sit at a table and there are spare seats and it's busy, then someone might sit there.

Jumpingthruhoops · 14/12/2024 23:27

I have to LOL at those saying they'd REFUSE to let someone have a seat. Like they'd have a say! 😂😂

I have mobility issues too. I wouldn't be able to juggle a latte and cake as you say you do as I use one and sometimes two crutches. I go with other people and sit at the table while they queue. You could do that too or go somewhere that is not too busy.

It’s like on a bus or train . I sit down and there’s a free seat next to me. Eventually it gets busy and someone says is that seat free. I say yes. The other person sits down next to me. It’s the same in a cafe. A free seat at my table is for another customer.

Exactly this. ALL of the seats are for ALL the customers.

Well, you can say no, and it takes a certain type of entitled asshole to see that as a go ahead to still sit down.
People say no for lots of reasons.

Or YA know, maybe it's not an 'entitled asshole' as you so graciously put it, but just someone who needs a seat - in this public cafe - when they have got their coffee and cake.

I don't think it's the person wanting a seat who is the 'entitled' one.

As I've already said, you don't always have something with you that you can use - particularly in warmer weather.

Ah sure you could take your knickers off - if you wear any!! 😂😅

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 14/12/2024 23:28

No, it is totally different.
Seats on transport are for getting people from one place to the other. And have you even been on public transport in rush hour? Having a ticket does not mean a seat. I have had to miss trains because they were like sardine cans and people were spilling out when the doors opened. No amount of ranting about having a ticket would have made a seat, or even standing room, magically appear.
Cafes are different. When you buy a drink/food, you are buying drink/food. You are not buying a seat. Lots of people get takeaway in cafes.
It is common sense to scan the place when you get there and assess if there is a seat of not. If not, get a take out, or go elsewhere. It seems to work for the people off of MN... I am not sure why MN posters think they are a special bunch.
