To be annoyed at being told to be considerate of disabled people

This sign was in the disabled toilet in a restaurant (which is also the only baby change in the restaurant).

What’s the point of this sign? What might parents be doing that they will stop after reading this?

Sorry but that’s rubbish. They are perfectly safe stood directly out the door in communication with you all the time.

but you crack on and let your fears mean a disabled person shits themselves due to lack of toilets

Thanks - I will continue to provide the level of safeguarding I think is appropriate as a parent to my small kids.

And I will continue to think people like you are selfish.

I don’t think it’s an unreasonable use of the facilities when you have multiple children, no.

Some people do all sorts in these kinds of spaces, too - call people, put make up on.

Tell me about it. They use it like a private office!

Oh what a shame. We were fostering such a special friendship

WinterBones · 13/12/2024 19:30

i tell you what you do. you wait for the cubicle at the furthest reach of the public bathroom, you open the door, and you pull your pushchair in with you as far as you can while you pee.

Any woman with half a brain will know its a mom trying to pee and not walk down and look in the loo to see what you're doing.

SaagAloopa · 13/12/2024 19:30

Sirzy · 13/12/2024 19:19

Sing songs with them! Get them doing a nursery rhyme or whatever while you’re in there so you know they are fine.

Until they are quiet.. then wtf do you do

So it’s multiple children that some is managing to stick under their arms in a very busy place then?

ye sounds a very realistic risk 🙄

Is there any reason why you and other parents aren't lobbying for parent and child toilets?

SaagAloopa · 13/12/2024 19:30

leave the cubicle door partially open if the pushchair won't fit in, so you can keep an eye on them in the few moment it takes to pee.

Where was this? Sweden? Norway? Japan?

@RubyWinehouse
Bluewater ( SE England ) had this for a while when it first opened
John Lewis in Bluewater as well. Plus tables to sit at so you could do your makeup

You do know invisible disabilities exist right? Most disabilities aren't visible. Your post is so offensive and - absurd coming that it is from a disabled person - ableist.

It was so upsetting to read. Thanks x

They wouldn't have to take multiple children just one ..

WinterBird24 · 13/12/2024 19:32

She wasn’t in the toilets!

WinterBones · 13/12/2024 19:34

i mean, my local shopping center specifically had a couple of cubicles you could get your pushchair in with you.. but even in ones that didn't, i never ever had an issue peeing and nor have i heard of someone taking a small child from a toilet with mom inside the cubicle.

The vast majority of women actually helped.. like "I won't touch but i'll stand here and keep an eye while you're in the cubicle" kind of thing if i couldn't do the 'last cubicle' thing.

SaagAloopa · 13/12/2024 19:34

Who said the kids are in a pushchair...

And the others would stay silent? And none of the people in such a busy environment would notice?

They exist
They are called accessible toilets

also for @WinterBird24

SaagAloopa · 13/12/2024 19:34

if they aren't in the pushchair you should be able to get them in the cubicle with you

TigerRag · 13/12/2024 19:30

Because they would rather take advantage of the few facilties disabled people have. Who care if it makes their lives harder.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 13/12/2024 19:36

WinterBones · 13/12/2024 19:07

and does that excuse the parents with toddlers that use our bathrooms just because they don't want to leave their pushchair while they pee? or can't keep an eye on their toddler in the smaller cubicles?

How about parents campaign for bigger cubicles, rather than using ours!

Easier just to nick the ones provided for others, innit. Same with wheelchair spaces.

It only affects them for a short while so they’re not bothered enough to campaign. Who cares that disabled people campaigned for years? They’ve had a baby and that’s more important.

WinterBird24 · 13/12/2024 19:37

TigerRag · 13/12/2024 19:30

Is there any reason why you and other parents aren't lobbying for parent and child toilets?

Because it’s really not such a big issue, I’ve probably visited a busy shopping centre with both my kids, on my own (ie no DH) about a dozen times - it’s normally to go to Clark’s, probably only needed a pee twice of those dozen times.

Over the course of now 5 years. At other venues I feel comfortable with my eldest in his own cubicle and me with the youngest. Plus my eldest is now, well older, and so the risk is getting smaller. I have more important issues in life than a situation I’ve described that’s happened once or twice….
