To have no idea what people do on Boxing Day?

For the first time, ever, I have no Boxing Day plans. Boxing Day was always seeing my grandparents (now they have died) and in the last 20 years, seeing my inlaws. Sadly they have both recently passed away.
I have two kids 8 and 12, and no idea what people do on Boxing Day! Any ideas gratefully received.

Have a good lie in followed by a nice brunch then a walk followed by a good country pub late lunch?

WatchOutForBabyHaggis · 13/12/2024 07:30

We sleep in, eat leftover turkey and trimmings for lunch, spend time looking a Xmas gifts/putting stuff together or whatnot. All 5 of us go for a walk in the afternoon with the dog. Then more of the same at home, feet up and heating on.

I love Boxing Day, just a total decompress of the mental previous few weeks.

We've always gone for a walk...as a extended family...it's one of the highlights of the Christmas time...then return for crackers and cheese and leftovers...

Play with toys the kids got for Christmas:

board games as a family

Christmas film / Christmas special

long dog walk and then put the fire on

chill, drink baileys and relax and eat lots of crisps!

We used to go to the pantomime in the afternoon on Boxing day when my dds were that age.
When they got older we used to go to the sales & have a festive coffee somewhere nice..
Did a big buffet tea for later which they always enjoyed.

I used to go to the boxing day sales pre child.
now it’s play with toys and attempt to tidy the house

We also have no extended family and like to go to the cinema on Boxing Day afternoon.

Take the dog for a walk normally, then home for films and food!

PipeworksCopper · 13/12/2024 07:52

Me, DH and kids go for a long walk up the mountain on Boxing Day. We take turkey sandwiches and a flask of hot chocolate.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 13/12/2024 07:53

Lie in. Countryside walk. Read new books etc. eat tasty food. My favourite day of the year as none of the pressure of Christmas day :)

Walk to the pub to watch the Morris dancing and home for ham egg and chips

HPandthelastwish · 13/12/2024 07:53

We sleep in, go for a walk along the beach, pub on the pier for a hot chocolate and walk back home, then buffet tea.

jeaux90 · 13/12/2024 07:53

I always do a lovely chilled day.

After the craziest Christmas Day (I host) it's lovely to have a beautiful piece of beef with just the 4 of us and a nice glass of red.

This is what we do except my dh is doing the dancing!

skippy67 · 13/12/2024 07:56

Go to football if our team is playing. Followed by board games and buffet at home.

Needanewname42 · 13/12/2024 07:57

Chill and relax. We have been known to have a pj day but sometimes think the kids need out.

This year I want to visit ILs rather than them trying to shoe horn a visit in on Christmas Day

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 13/12/2024 07:57

Games night with friends, with sausage rolls, pigs in blankets, cold meats and a cheese board.

Day time usually a lie in, cold turkey, chips and peas for lunch, and a long dog walk in the afternoon.

ToffeePennie · 13/12/2024 07:57

we always do Christmas backwards - Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve, then a really easy day on Christmas Day with a walk and a buffet and the children visit our friends and neighbours. Maybe you could go for a lovely walk somewhere, take the children on their bikes and some hot chocolate in a flask?

KrisAkabusi · 13/12/2024 07:57

Why do you have to have plans? Can't you just see what you feel like on the day?

WalterdelaMare · 13/12/2024 07:58

We love to stay home. Go for a walk, eat leftovers, relax. The week between Christmas and new year is my favourite.

NeverSeenAFarmerOnABike · 13/12/2024 07:59

Eat lots of cheese and say "is it Tuesday? Wednesday?" repeatedly.

Pottedpalm · 13/12/2024 07:59

The Christmas Jigsaw of course!!!!

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 13/12/2024 08:01

It's my birthday which is actually quite nice because it's a family day anyway. I've latterly come to enjoy the fact that it can be low key since I don't enjoy a fuss!

stayathomer · 13/12/2024 08:03

A walk, food and then board games and Christmas tv!!

AluckyEllie · 13/12/2024 08:06

I loved Boxing Day as a kid and do even now. Christmas Day was family/presents and games in the evening. Boxing Day was a lazy breakfast of leftover bits, playing with whatever you hadn’t gotten around to the day before. Out for fresh air with the dog and then back for bubble and squeak with whatever new film someone had for for Christmas. Much more relaxed.
