To hate Thursdays

Elsieandjean · 12/12/2024 08:03

I know I’m being unreasonable but it’s my day off. And I have two children who will ensure I don’t get a seconds peace. I will have shouting and squawking and yelling and squabbling all day.

I will take them out of course but I don’t want to go out really <petulant> I just want to stay in!

Can you change either the day off or the childcare, so you have a day off from work when they're in childcare?

I know probably very expensive but I would sacrifice other treats or even normal things for it, so you have a bit of life / release from the unending-ness of it all.

ToffeePennie · 12/12/2024 08:12

You’re not being unreasonable, but I love Thursdays! I get to visit a care home and do my services there and then go and see my regular patients too! I genuinely adore Thursdays!

Elsieandjean · 12/12/2024 08:13

I can’t @ACatNamedRobin - it’s so expensive as it is, it’s my main outgoing by a long way. I actually have two days off but for one my older child goes to preschool and that day isn’t too bad (although the mornings and afternoons are stressful) but Thursdays are wretched.

You don't have to go out. Give yourself an easy day.

UndeniablyGenX · 12/12/2024 08:16

I don't like Thursdays. All the tiredness of the end of the week, but it's not actually Friday yet. My second least-favourite day after Mondays.

Problem is it isn’t an easy day - it isn’t no matter what I do but it’s quarter past eight and I’ve already had several screaming episodes. My younger one doesn’t let me do anything, she just endlessly follows me around the house crying if I go out of sight for a second. It’s smothering and I can’t get anything done.

Christmas films all day on the telly?

Don't worry about doing stuff. Colour in and watch films. Get them to help you cook if you need to?

I'm with you. I struggle with Thursdays. Not because of kids. Mine are large.

Because by that stage I've lost track and usually go into it thinking it's Friday. When I realise it's still only Thursday it ends up the longest day.

Probably even longer for everyone else who have to listen to me grumbling "HOW is it only Thursday? How?!"

Thank you for giving me the heads up today.

How old are the DC? What do you need to help you enjoy the day a bit more?

This sounds horrendous but have them in childcare and a day to myself but financially it isn’t possible and also I have the days off FOR them so a bit daft.

I know it sounds stupid but they won’t watch TV, they just fight over toys and me mostly. I was trying to transfer some money this morning and they were literally climbing over me and jumping and fighting. (Not physically I mean squabbling.) It is exhausting, absolutely relentless.

I don't work due to illness so had two under two 24/7 until eldest was 3. But school run, tea, weekends, school holidays all mash into 1!!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 12/12/2024 08:25

I hate Thursdays. They are always a long day, as you can feel the weekend just around the corner but still such a long way away.

I'm so tired on Thursdays. I get my 2nd wind by Friday.

This does make me go a bit cold.

I experienced similar and it was one of the reasons I increased back to full time at work. Experienced discrimination at work being part time. If PT work to parent DC was a great option many; many more fathers would do it.

FranKatzenjammer · 12/12/2024 08:29

I do a job I hate on Thursdays. I'd love a day off with a couple of kids.

I used to think that. Then I had them 😂

I appreciate that childcare costs are high and unaffordable for many households.

Elsieandjean · 12/12/2024 08:32

It’s a bit shit @Loopytiles because you get treated like a SAHM at home and a full timer at work. I’m not sure there’s a way round this though; I did full time once and it was awful, then part time is a bit of a pain. I’m hoping it will be a bit better next year as my older child will be in school.

Me too! Though it was Thursday yesterday and asked my DH last night what day it was…then I groaned into a pillow!

ChannelFiveDrama · 12/12/2024 08:37

Thursday sounds like your non-working day rather than a day off. Presumably you also get an annual leave allowance so maybe take one of those the day before or after a Thursday and have that completely to yourself? It's exhausting juggling work and children so give yourself a bit of a treat with a day's leave.

mrsnjw · 12/12/2024 08:38

I remember the days well. Mine are 18 and 16 now but when they 1 and 3 it was a slog! I'd look at the clock and it was 9.30am and I was ready for bedtime. This too will pass as they start school and grow up. I'd advise to not try and do anything else apart from play with them. Abandon the household chores and just relax and embrace it. The dog will clear and there will be sunny days again!

mrsnjw · 12/12/2024 08:39

The fog will clear

Delatron · 12/12/2024 08:41

I understand. With younger children sometimes it’s easier to just be in work. At least you have a lunch break and can get things done. Would you consider upping your hours and doing an extra day?

Or would half a days childcare be affordable? Any drop and go childcare near you for a few hours? I did this on my ‘day off’. Slightly more affordable than a whole day of childcare.
