Wool carpet

I had 100% wool carpet laid a month ago. It smelled very sheepy/farmy and now has faded but still smells distinctly different and sheepy in that room. AIBU to message the carpet fitter and expect it to not smell at this point or is this the nature of wool carpets and it'll take a bit longer to fade? Would really like it to just smell normal in there!

Mine didn't smell but I had a wool carpet that faded a lot over 2 or 3 years. Very noticeable furniture marks when we moved out.

You don’t want wool to smell of… wool?

How damp is your house?
Wool only smells sheepy if it is a bit damp.

Not super damp I don't think, the smell has reduced when running a dehumidifier but then comes back. It's smelled strong since first laid though. I just found and removed some offcuts stashed in the cupboard which may be contributing to the smell as they smell VERY strong and feel almost oily which I assume is the lanolin. Hoping that helps

Wool is a nice smell - sheep is less nice. Wool batches can vary and no, I don't want nor did I expect my living room to smell potently of farmyard.

Don't worry about the smell, just hope moths don't invade!

LostittoBostik · 10/12/2024 18:34

Mine is sheepy... fading after 18 months, very good and hard wearing. Glad I invested in it.

Thank you, glad not just me. I have 100% wool carpet elsewhere in the house laid by Tapi, this is Cormar and feels much better quality so wonder if it's a case of the better the quality the wool, the smellier initially?

Luckily we're not a mothy area!

At the end of the day, having some lanolin in your wool makes it last longer.
Your carpet could last 30+ years

Did this ever fade for you? I’m About a month into cormar 100% wool and realized the smell isn’t fading so go in touch with the installer and think this smell is probably from the moth and carpet beetle treatment used. Not happy about this given it’s in my toddlers room and it smells so toxic to me
