But why has Pope Francis unveiled baby Jesus in a Palestinian keffiyeh? I’m Christian with strong Jewish descent and distant family in Israel. I’m aware that Israel has committed war crimes and Netanyahu needs to go. There was no justification for Oct 7th but there’s also no justification for war crimes. However, I’m not a fan of changing history to align with your political agenda. Jesus was born in Judea to a Jewish mother, making him Jewish. It was named Palestine long after Jesus’ death. The amount of kids on TikTok or Instagram who genuinely believe Jesus was a Palestinian Arab baffles me! Why can’t you be anti the Israeli govt without making stuff up? I get that they want to make a political point regarding Jesus’ birth place being bombed, but all I’ve seen is people interpret it to mean Jesus was Palestinian.

My sister is very pro Palestine and has shared it over her social media and I know that if I make a comment, she’ll probably stop talking to me (as she’s already stopped talking to other family members over this). It honestly hurts my heart as I’m not even supporting the current Israeli govt but if I challenge her on anything, she loses her sh1t. I don’t want to lose my little sister so I keep my mouth shut. But the stuff she comes out with is honestly bordering on antisemitic. Do I say something?

Pope Francis has already called for investigation into the possibility of Israel committing genocide. Perhaps he is not trying to change the past but the future, and bringing attention to the issue hoping it will have some effect. Using the such familiar image of the innocent child with nowhere to go is such a poignant reminder of what's happening right at this minute.

As a Roman Catholic I am very happy with this.

Re "it was named Palestine long after Jesus' death" - remember the Philistines living slightly further south on the coast? It's etymologically the same name, more obvious in the Arabic name for Palestine, Filasṭīn / فلسطين. An area with the name has existed since at least the 5th century BCE. Doesn't mean Jesus was born there obvs but let's not deny that Palestine has existed for a long time.

The pope calling out genocide...
You'd think they'd get their own greedy, paedophilic, mysoginistic house in order first.

Oh right.

Sure let them die so while he's sorting it out.
