Going to South Africa on safari this week and I was super excited. IJust found out it's freak weather 44c. Feel like just not going but all paid and not sure I can do it to dh. 44!!!

Take a hat and drink water, plus a battery spray fan 🤷🏻‍♀️

ThisAquaCrow · 08/12/2024 23:16

What’s the AIBU?

ParsnipPuree · 08/12/2024 23:19

The aibu is I want to tell dh 44 is not safe and I'd rather lose the money. I don't think a hat and water will touch the sides!

44 is perfectly safe if you take precautions. It's Africa in their summer, what did you expect the temperature to be like?

2024onwardsandup · 08/12/2024 23:28

It’s not unsafe! I mean you need to make sure you stay hydrated and don’t get burnt etc - but unless you were planning on hiking through the bush you’ll be safe

but it will also be soo hot - I hate the hate weather and this woluod be a nightmare for me - but I’d definitely still go and wouldn’t cancel

ParsnipPuree · 08/12/2024 23:32

We WERE planning on hiking through the bush. I was expecting mid 30's this is freak summer weather even for Africa. The trackers are skilled but can't imagine any animals wanting to make an appearance in that heat.

Can you afford to "just not go"? I'm guessing if you're considering it then perhaps you can afford to write it off, and what's the point in going if the heat will ruin it for you.
Can DH go without you?

I get that it's going to be hot but surely that's the risk you take booking South Africa in summer!

DazedAndConfused321 · 08/12/2024 23:48

It's Africa... In the summer...

Strokethefurrywall · 08/12/2024 23:50

It's fine, yes it's hot but it's dry and you can stay hydrated.

When I was there it was 44oc too, had a great time and it didn't feel excessive.

You will never forgive yourself if you cancel this trip because of the sun... always keep a hat on, long linen/combats and long sleeved loose tops.

Thank you so much for telling me this. It's costing a ridiculous amount by any standard and no we probably can't afford to leave it. Thank you for answering, you've made me feel a little better!

Game drives are usually very early in the morning and at sunset, so you may not be out in the main heat of the day. Take appropriate clothes (a hat!) and you'll be fine! A friend mine ran a 250km ultra marathon across the Namib desert 2 weeks ago and has come home in one piece.

Preteenstruggle · 09/12/2024 00:01

It got to 41 when I went to Kruger. Crikey it was hot, but bearable.
As someone said, game drives are early, 4:30 am I think, so it is cooler for that.
it gets dark very early there, so evenings are manageable too

Thank you.. they are adjusting the time of the drives. Our room has aircon and plunge pool which will probably be like my hot water tap but the lodge iopen plan so no aircon.. it is what it is. Thanks all for advice

I'm assuming you went in summer, did you see as many animals as you were expecting or less due to the heat? Yes relishing thought of getting up 4am!!

November. Yes we saw lots of animals. All the big 5. I had nothing to compare it with, but my husband, boyfriend at the time, had been many times as his parents used to live out there. He said we saw as much as he ever did.

Preteenstruggle

(Love your username) That's really helpful, thank you so much, I've woken up this morning more positive and still looking forward.
