AIBU to be upset by this?

At work today one of my colleagues who I’m not close with came and RUBBED my belly and said ‘wow, you look like you have a second one in there’

My DS is 2, I’m single and everyone is aware of the fact that I have accepted I won’t be having anymore children as I’m happy single after an awful abusive relationship.

I told her this was rude and she said ‘I’m sorry you’re so sensitive’.

I’m aware I have put on some weight in the last year as my appearance is the last thing on my mind right now due to simply being in survival mode after a lucky escape from ex. But that’s no one’s place to tell me!

Im still upset by this comment!

Similar happened to me when I was much younger and pre kids, I do have a natural pot belly but I was so upset, it really wiped out any confidence I had.
She's a bitch, if she had apologised you could put it down to being a bit dense but she sounds nasty!

I agree with everyone - speak to HR or a manager. BUT I would not put in an official complaint... This way HR / Boss does not have to set any wheels in motion but it's on the radar.
Bit sneaky but you get to tell them without them having to tell her... if that makes sense.

I’m not so sure about this. If things turn terminally toxic then you need a proper paper trail. I still kind of regret keeping everything below the radar in a previous job.

A colleague who was not officially my boss but who often assumed supervisory responsibility (because of the way the department was structured) commented once that my ankles looked swollen, and was everything OK? I was frankly creeped out by this and mumbled something about hormones. Some time later she apologised for her comment, but a few weeks later my manager came back with ‘concerns’ over my performance, drummed up over a couple of minor typos in emails, phone calls I’d transferred to people who weren’t in the mood for receiving them that day (even though it was their job…) that kind of thing. I changed jobs with no regrets - £10,000 a year wasn’t worth the fight - but I’d have liked to leave them with some egg on their face.

Is there a part of her you could 'RUB' and comment on? If she reacts, tell her not to be "so sensitive"🙂

Coffeeisnecessary · 12/12/2024 14:26

This is awful, so sorry you are experiencing this OP. What kind of business do you work in?!

Fraaances · 12/12/2024 14:30

Do you think she has organised a herd of acolytes to repeat the same message? Seems weirdly coincidental. What a nasty piece of work. (And tbf so are they). You will have had witnesses, right?

isthesolution · 12/12/2024 15:29

Do not reply to any of these comments with anything other than 'that's really inappropriate and upsetting'.

Write them down as quickly as possible - date, time, who said it, where you were, who was present - you need a complete log.

Go to your manager and HR and say you would like to report bullying in the workplace. Do not be fobbed off - their treatment of you is NOT ok!

This. How awful for you to have to be dealing with such horrid people.

healthybychristmas · 12/12/2024 19:19

That's really shocking. How dare they talk to you like that. I hope they get disciplined for it.

Well after this post things got even worse!

So we had our team Christmas lunch on Monday.

Two other people told me that I’m overweight, when I didn’t ask. To quote ‘when we first met you you were so slim and beautiful but we just don’t know what happened. You’ve put on a lot of weight’

Of course after the comments on Sunday this stung and ruined my day!

My response was that is rude (again) and they said it’s our opinion. I said I didn’t ask for your opinion!!!! Why are you all so obsessed with my weight.

So our general manager has opened an investigation.

Horrible this has all completely came from nowhere!

WTAF?!!! What’s wrong with these people?!

Such awful things to say to someone.

I am so sorry you are going through this OP, it’s unnecessary and cruel 😔

I would take that straight to HR. That is not acceptable in life but especially in work.

So inappropriate.
Your physical appearance is none of their business.
These women were never told "if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".
That is so shit OP. Especially after such a rough time. Don't listen to what they say but do report it. They deserve a dressing down by management.
Being in survival mode is tough, but you did for the little person that you love more than anything. And that is an achievement in itself. You've tacklsd one bully by leaving them, don't let another set of bullies bring you down.

Itwiznyme · 14/12/2024 15:12

@MyLemonKoala hope your ok? How did you get on with the GM? Hoping you’ve taken some of the good advice on here and made a formal complaint re bullying?
